Korean Journal of Dermatology 2013;51(5):311-314
An ultrasonic device for medical skin care is used to gently exfoliate the skin of dead skin cells and impurities. Ultrasound waves help loosen and remove oil, dirt and cellular debris from pores. Ponophoresis or sonophoresis is the use of ultrasound to increase percutaneous absorption of drugs, serums, lotions, creams and masques to a depth where it is more effective and beneficial. For improved results and safer procedures, we need to know the contraindications and adverse effects of ultrasonic treatments. Therefore, we summarized and reviewed the issue of safety including contraindications, cautions, and adverse events.

Radio frequency and iontophoresis are two commonly used types of medical skin care equipment, utilizing electrical energy. Radio frequency technology has become an important treatment in aesthetic medicine, and has many applications, including non-ablative tightening of the cutaneous tissue to improve skin laxity and to reduce wrinkles. Iontophoresis on the other hand uses a small electric charge to deliver medicine or other chemicals through the stratum corneum, the principle barrier to percutaneous absorption, without the use of a needle. It is used mainly for aesthetic reasons, including treatment of melasma, and for anti-aging therapy. Effective cosmetic results have been demonstrated for both these techniques in a number of studies. However, recklessness and incorrect use of the machines by unqualified practitioners can cause side effects. Here, we review the possible side effects and related coping strategies associated with radio frequency and iontophoresis.

BACKGROUND: Skin laser treatment has improved significantly and has become an effective treatment approach for many skin diseases while also having applications for beauty treatments. However, since skin laser transfers energy directly to the skin, the misuse of such treatment may result in permanent damage to skin tissues. OBJECTIVE: This survey of Korean adults, conducted to obtain their perspectives on and their treatment experience with skin laser treatment, will be used to determine the current status of skin laser treatment and to identify necessary changes to ensure proper and safe conduct of skin laser treatment. METHODS: From April 5th to April 12th, 2016, a survey was conducted to obtain information regarding the perspectives and the treatment experience of adults aged 20~59 years. RESULTS: Approximately 50% of the participants had experience with skin laser treatment, and among these, 24.7% had not received treatment at a dermatology clinic. Compared to treatment at a dermatology clinic, the danger of side effects was 1.7 times higher at a non-dermatology clinic, 2 times higher at a skin care shop, and 5.3 times higher at an Oriental medical clinic. Among patients who received skin laser treatment, 16.1% experienced side effects, and among these, 1 out of 4 patients visited a non-dermatologist for treatment of these side effects. CONCLUSION: The results of the survey showed that in order for the public to receive safe and effective skin laser treatment based on professional diagnosis, there is a definitive need to provide correct information to the public and to implement changes to ensure proper understanding of skin laser treatment among this population.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2022;39(6):1254-1262
Natural collagen peptides are collagen hydrolysates. Because of their unique physicochemical properties and excellent biological activities, collagen peptides have been a research hotspot of cosmetic raw materials development and skincare efficacy improvement. Combined with the needs of the skincare efficacy and the development trends of cosmetics, the extraction methods and their structural characteristics of natural collagen peptides were summarized in detail. The applications and its research progress in skincare efficacy of collagen peptides, such as moisturizing and anti-wrinkle, trophism and anti-aging, filling and skin regeneration were expressed with emphasis. Finally, the development and practical applications in cosmetics of natural collagen peptides were adequately prospected.

6.Cosmetical Skin Treatment and the Treatment Nature of Skin Cosmetic.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 2004;42(2):131-137
The medical system is turning into a general health care system recently. The change in the system increases the cooperation between the physicians and the non-physicians in reality. So it is inappropriate to punish every cooperative work between the two for unlicensed medical practice control program anymore. In order to readjust the control over the unlicensed medical practice, critically dismantling and reconstructing the concept of medical treatment must be done. The three elements of the concept of medical treatment can be constructed socially in relation to disease. When this is done under social subsystems, the ideological functions of disease and medical treatment concepts can be explained. There are three aspects to the current unlicensed medical practice control program. There is a large gap between the legal judgment and the medical rationality. Moreover, the government unnecessarily has a full control over all dimensions of the medical treatment concept, and the license system only emphasizes the status, not the essence of the medical treatment itself. The dermatologists and cosmeticians' work must be divided but done cooperatively. A way to legislate this is to draw the cosmeticians into the area of medical skin treatment. Rather than solving the problem by giving cosmeticians another status, it is important for them to cooperate functionally with the dermatologists. The government should control the `cooperative division of work' between the two indirectly, so that the civil society can function on its own disciplinary mechanism.

Journal of Practical Medicine 2003;442(2):17-20
An investigation conducted on 85 health workers at basic level of 12 communes of Tien Lang District, Hai Phong City showed that the preparing of 100% penicilline; 93.9% ampicilline; 95% streptomycine; 16.3% lincomycine; 66.6% cefalexine; 37.5% cloroxite; chloramphenicol injections were undergone a skin test. In 5.59% of malconducted samples of skin test, shock was manifested and the management of shock was not performed properly, including 2 cases of injection of Depessolon and Dimedrol first

BACKGROUND: Medical skin care is essential for the treatment of skin diseases all over the world. Medical skin care is also part of medical practice and this must be differentiated from the simple skin care that is given for normal healthy skin. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to discuss medical skin care and the related medical devices and legal issues. METHODS: We reviewed the related laws and regulations, we consulted experts and associations and we analyzed the result of the survey. RESULTS: Legally, medical skin care and simple skin care are well classified. However, many illegal procedures are still performed by non-medical personnel and many adverse effects have been reported as a result. Furthermore, there are no legal restrictions for the performer based on the grade of each medical skin care procedure. CONCLUSION: For the best results and safe procedures, medical skin care must be performed by approved medical equipment under the supervision of a physician or medical personnel. Continuous control and guidance by the government is strongly needed.

10.Epidermal Barrier in Atopic Dermatitis.
Byung Eui KIM ; Donald YM LEUNG
Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research 2012;4(1):12-16
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex disease that affects up to 20% of children and impacts the quality of patients and families in a significant manner. New insights into the pathophysiology of AD point to an important role of structural abnormalities in the epidermis combined with immune dysregulation. Filaggrin (FLG) is synthesized as a large precursor, profilaggrin, and is expressed in the upper layers of the epidermis. FLG plays a critical role in the epidermal barrier, and FLG mutations cause abnormal epidermal function. FLG mutations are strongly associated with early-onset, and persistent severe AD. In addition, FLG deficiency in the epidermis is related to allergic sensitization and asthma. The basic skin care including repair and protection of the skin barrier with proper hydration and topical anti-inflammatory therapy is important to control the severity of skin disease in patients with AD.
