OBJECTIVETo observe clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture on Sjogren syndrome.
METHODSTreatment group (n=60) were treated with acupuncture of clearing away dryness and toxic substance and removing obstruction in collaterals at Quze (PC 3), Taichong (LR 3), Xuehai (SP 10), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Taixi (KI 3), and the control group (n=60) with prednisone. Their therapeutic effects were compared.
RESULTSThe total effective rate was 73.3% in the treatment group and 56.7% in the control group with a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05); there was no reverse effect in the treatment group.
CONCLUSIONThe needling method for clearing dryness and removing obstruction in collaterals is effective and safe for treatment of Sjogren syndrome.

Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2019;39(11):1173-1176
OBJECTIVE:
To compare the clinical efficacy of needle-knife and hydroxychloroquine sulfate in the treatment of dry mouth and eyes symptoms of primary Sjögren's syndrome.
METHODS:
A total of 60 patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each group. In the observation group, needle-knife was used in the range of 2 cm and 2-3 cm below the occipital protuberance, the left and right lateral bone edges of the C spinous process, between and within the range of 1.5-3 cm beside the C and C spinous processes, points between the left and right mandibular angle and the mastoid, the treatment was given 1 time a week for 8 times. The hydroxychloroquine sulfate was applied 0.2 g each time, 2 times daily, 4 weeks as a course and a total of 2 courses in the control group. The changes of salivary flow rate, tear volume, serum immunoglobulin IgG, IgA, IgM contents and Chinese medicine symptom score were observed before and after treatment in the two groups, and the efficacy was evaluated.
RESULTS:
The total effective rate in the observation group was 86.7% (26/30), which was better than 70.0% (21/30) in the control group (<0.05). The salivary flow rates, tear volume, serum IgG contents and Chinese medicine symptom scores in the two groups were significantly improved after treatment (all <0.05), and the improvement degree in the observation group was better than the control group (all <0.05). There was no significant difference in IgA and IgM between the two groups and before and after treatment (all >0.05).
CONCLUSION
Needle-knife is superior to hydroxychloroquine sulfate in improving dry mouth and eyes symptoms and reducing serum IgG content in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2006;26(1):57-60
Sjogren's syndrome is one of clinical difficult and complicated diseases and there is no radical treatment for it at present. The authors summarize the thinking of clinical syndrome differentiation and treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion, 4 syndrome-differentiation methods and dredging the Triple Energizer channel, and needling three parts by long-term clinical practice and in combination with clinical study achievements of TCM in recent years, and put the important point of treatment on the Triple Energizer, with the points on the Triple Energizer channel as main points, combined with the points with functions of regulating functional activity of qi and regulating visceral functions, attaining better results. This provides a new method for acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of Sjogren's Syndrome.

Sj9gren's syndrome(SS) is an autoimmune disease with glandular dysfunction caused by the massive infiltration of the exocrine glands by lymphocytes. The pathogenesis of this disease is related to the chronic inflammatory response of the exocrine glands due to excessive activation of B cells and T cells. In addition to dry mouth and eyes, SS can also cause damage to other organs and systems in the human body, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has definite clinical efficacy in the treatment of SS as it can alleviate symptoms and regulate immune disorders without causing adverse reactions, demonstrating high safety. This paper reviews the current status of preclinical and clinical trials about the TCM treatment of SS in the past decade. TCM mainly mitigates SS symptoms such as dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, and joint pain and improves the prognosis and quality of life of patients by regulating the abnormally activated B cells and T cells, inhibiting the autoimmune response, restoring the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and reducing the pathological damage caused by immune complexes to exocrine glands and joints in SS patients.

Journal of Zhejiang University. Medical sciences 2016;45(1):86-97
Sjögren's syndrome is a kind of autoimmune disease, whose main clinical symptoms are dry mouth, dry eye and chronic parotid glandular inflammation. The conservative treatments include artificial tears or saliva, oral administration of corticosteroids, and immunosuppressantsl with limited effectiveness. Along with the development of molecular biology, vast attentions are being paid to researches on gene therapy for Sjögren's syndrome, hopefully to bring gospel to patients with Sjögren's syndrome. This article reviews the recent research progresses on transcatheter delivery of recombinant adenovirus vector with aquaporin gene in experimental treatment of Sjögren's syndrome.
