Objective To study the metabolic alteration in the brain of patients with cyanosed congenital heart disease (CCHD) by using 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1H MRS) and discover the pathophysiology of chronic hypoxic brain, which will help to diagnose and treat this disease completely. Methods Twenty five patients with CCHD and 25 controls were performed PRESS 1H MRS and MRI, The areas under the resonance of metabolites were measured, the ratios of the other metabolites to Cr were calculated and compared. Results In patients with CCHD, the mean value of NAA/ Cr was significantly lower than that in controls ( P 0.05). Conclusion 1H MRS can detect brain metabolic changes in patients with cyanosed congenital heart disease in vivo noninvasively and can detect the metabolism disorder of the energy and amino acid, so the pathophysiology of this disease can be understood.

AIM:To observe the relation between astroglial activation state and ischemic tolerance in the gerbil hippocampus. METHOD: Bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries and immunofluorescent methods in the gerbil hippocampal tissue. Slices were used. The morphological changes of the neurons were observed by light microscopy.RESULTS:Pretreatment with 2 minute bilateral carotid artery occlusion produced protective effects of CA 1 neurons. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) staining showed weak positive cells in control group. Most of GFAP positive cells showed weak and middle positive cells after recirculation 1d and 2d following ischemic 3.5 min and preconditioning of the brain with sublethal ischemia respectively.CONCLUSION:Astroglial played an important role in cerebral ischemia. It is possible that state of astroglial activation related to neuronal survival in ischemic tolerance.

Improvement of the review of dissertation for doctoral degree is important for the training of qualified doctors.Current practice includes double-blind review and open review. This paper compares and analyses the outcome of the two kinds of reviews and found that double-blind review is more objective that the other(the mean of open review score is 96.39±2.069,the mean of double-blind review score is 85.18±6.635.P=0.001,P<0.01).In the end some suggestions are proposed to improve the double-blind review system.

The paper analysed the double-blind review result of Ph.D candidates' dissertation at Peking University People's Hospital.Rigor deficiency and inadequate knowledge about the research subjects were identified as the main problems. In the end some suggestions were proposed from two aspects,namely,full-process management of Ph.D training and supervisor-team construction.

Objective To investigate the relationship between body fat distribution and pulse wave velocity (PWV) in middle-aged and aged population. Methods Two hundred patients received health examination were enrolled into the male group (103 cases) and the female group (97 cases). Visceral fat volume (VFV), subcutaneous fat volume (SFV) and ba-PWV were determined. Results Compared to patients in the female group, patients in the male group had significantly higher VFV values [(3.17 ± 0.84) kg vs (2.30 ± 0.94) kg], and lower SFV values [(15.56 ± 3.49) kg vs (17.69 ± 4.82) kg], In the male group, there existed a positive correlation between ba-PWV and age, VFV, fasting blood glucose,SBP and DBP. In the female group, a positive correlation was found between ba-PWV and age, SFV, TG, BUN, SBP and DBP, while a negative correlation was observed for HDL-C and Apo A1. Conclusion There was gender differences in body fat distribution in middle-aged and aged healthy population. In the male group , age, VFV, SBP, and DBP were the only independent and significant risk factors for ba-PWV. In the female group , age, SBP and Apo A1 were the independent risk factors for ba-PWV.

Objective To investigate the expression and clinical significance of thyroid transcription factor-1(TTF-1)and chromogranin A(CgA)in small cell lung cancer(SCLC). Methods The expressions of TTF-1 and CgA protein in 68 cases of SCLC tissues and 20 cases of normal lung tissues were examined by immunohistochemistry method, and their correlations with clinical features of SCLC were analyzed. Results The positive rates of TTF-1 and CgA protein in SCLC were 88. 2%(60 / 68)and 70. 6%(48 / 68),respec-tively,and they were higher than those in normal lung tissue[10. 0%(2 / 20)and 5. 0%(1 / 20);χ2 = 45. 442, P = 0. 000;χ2 = 26. 941,P = 0. 000]. The expression of TTF-1 protein was not related to the patients' age,sex and tumor size, while closely related to smoking index(χ2 = 4. 131,P = 0. 042),lymph node metastasis(χ2 =5. 488,P = 0. 019)and clinical stage(χ2 = 6. 011,P = 0. 014). The expression of CgA protein was not related to the patients' age, sex, tumor size and smoking index, while closely related to lymph node metastasis(χ2 =9. 895,P = 0. 002)and clinical stage(χ2 = 4. 145,P = 0. 042). Conclusion TTF-1 and CgA protein are highly expressed in SCLC,especially in the patients with lymph node metastasis and extensive disease.

Objective To observe the effect of the electroacupuncture ( EA) on the expression of cyclin-de-pendent kinase 5 ( Cdk5 ) in rats with muscle contusion and to explore its mechanism. Methods Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a normal group of 4, a model group of 4, a natural recovery group ( NR) of 12 and an EA group of 12. All except those in the normal group had acute skeletal muscle contusion induced through a heavy blow. The EA group was treated with 15 minutes of EA daily beginning 48 h after the injury while the other rats received no EA. The model group was sacrificed 24 h after modeling, and rats from the NR and EA groups were sacrificed on the 7th, 14th and 21st day after the modeling to collect tissues. Hematoxylin eosin ( HE) staining, Western blotting and quantitative real-time fluorescence PCR were used to observe any histological changes, as well as Cdk5 protein and mRNA expression. Results The HE staining showed that the other 3 groups displayed larger a-mounts of muscle fiber fracture, dissolution and inflammatory cell invasion than was observed in the normal group. Compared with the NR group, quicker recovery was seen in the EA group as evidenced by faster muscle satellite cell proliferation and more new muscle fiber generation. The average Cdk5 protein expression in both the NR and EA groups was higher than in the normal group, and that of the EA group was significantly lower than that of the NR group. Conclusions Muscle contusion can increase Cdk5 expression in skeletal muscles, at least in rats. EA can promote the restoration of skeletal muscle function, probably by inhibiting CDK5 protein and mRNA expression.
