Objective Fluctuation of glucose levels is more likely to cause oxidative stress which contributes to the development of insulin resistance through activating c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK).Such antio xidants as vitamin C or vitamin E do not appear very helpful.Radix Astragali (RA) is an herbal medicine with antioxidative ability. The study was to explore whether RA would lower the risk of insulin resistance in diabetic rats. Methods Diabetic rats received RA,insulin or both RA and insulin after diabetes were induced in male Wistar rats.Serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα),advanced glycation endproducts(AGEs) levels in kidney, the expression of insulin receptor (IR),insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1),p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK),p-p38 MAPK,p-JNK,p-IRS-1 Ser307,and p-IRS-1 Tyr612 in skeletal muscles were determined. Results Compared to diabetic rats treated with insulin, the diabetic rats treated with both insulin and RA demonstrated significantly lower levels of IL-6,TNF-α and AGEs (P < 0.05),significantly lower activation of p-p38 MAPK and JNK (P <0.05),significantly higher expressions of IRS-1 (P <0.05),p-IRS-1 Tyr612,and significantly lower expression of p-IRS-1 Ser307 (P < 0.05).Conclusions RA can lower the risk of insulin resistance through fighting oxidative stress in diabetic rats.

OBJECTIVETo provide reference data on frequency and distribution of bone islands (BIs) and investigate their relationship with age, gender, and localization.
METHODSA population who received a pretreatment and at least one follow-up panoramic radiograph in the Department of Oral Radiology, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, were selected for this retrospective study. A sample population of 29,556 patients (12,824 males and 16,732 females) with different dental complaints and ages ranging from 8 to 80 years (mean age: 23.95 years) were included.
RESULTSIn the radiographic evaluation, BIs appeared as localized, well-defined, non-expansile, radiopaque masses which were round, elliptic, or irregular in shape. Their sizes varied from a few millimeters to about 2 cm in diameter. A total of 598 radiopacities were detected, and 545 patients of 29,556 patients (1.84%) had BIs. Among subjects with multiple lesions, 49 patients had 2 BIs and 2 patients had 3 BIs. The BIs had immense mandibular predilection, with presentation primarily in the premolar/molar region. The condition appeared to have no tendencies based on sex.
CONCLUSIONRecognition of BIs variation is significant in dental examinations.

Objective To analyze the misdiagnosis reasons in renal tumors with contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and to improve cognition on CEUS. Methods Two-hundred and eighty-five cases were compared with pathology, the images in 22 cases misdiagnosed on CEUS were reviewed retrospectively and the reasons were analyzed. Results The diagnosis accuracy and misdiagnosis rate of CEUS were 92. 28 % (263/285) and 7. 72%(22/285), respectively. In these 22 cases, 9 cases misdiagnosed as renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were conformed by pathology as renal angiomyolipoma(RAMD), showed 5 cases "fast wash-in and fast wash-out", 4 cases "fast wash-in and slowly wash-out". Seven cases were conformed as RCC, in which 5 were misdiagnosed as RAML, showed 4 cases "fast wash-in and slowly wash-out", 1 cases "simultaneously wash-in and simultaneously wash-out", and 2 were misdiagnosed as renal cyst with no enhancement founded. Four cases misdiagnosed as hematoma were conformed as pyelo-carcinoma, with no enhancement founded in renal pelvis. The remaining 2 cases misdiagnosed as inflammatory pseudotumor were conformed as RCC, showed "fast wash-in and slowly wash-out". Conclusions With the high diagnosis accuracy,CEUS is an important method in diagnosis of renal tumors. Analyzing the misdiagnosed reasons may improve the cognition on CEUS and decrease the misdiagnosis.

Objective To investigate the phenotype and function of CD8+T cells cultured with SK-OV-3. Methods Transwell coculture experiments were conducted in 24-well plates with inner wells to separate CD8+ T cells and SK-OV-3. After 5 days of culture, CD8+ T cells were washed, and 1 × 106 cells were collected for Foxp3, CD25, CD28, CTLA-4 and GITR mRNA analysis and 2 × 106 cells were collected to detect expression of Foxp3, CD25, CD28, CTLA-4 and GITR in CD8+ T cells by flow cytometry. CD8+T cells that cultured alone or with SK-OV-3 were added at ratios of 1∶0 , 1∶1 , 1∶5 , 1∶10 , and 0∶1 to na?ve CD4+ T cells in 96-well plates. All wells were cultured with the presence of irradiated PBMCs and anti-CD3 antibody. After 72 h, [3H]-thymidine was added for 16 h prior to the determination of proliferation by scintillation counting. Results Compared with CD8+ T cells cultured without SK-OV-3 , the expression of Foxp3 and CTLA-4 was increased and CD28 expression was decreased in CD8+ T cells cultured with SK-OV-3 (both P < 0.001). We found that CD8+T cells cultured with SK-OV-3 significantly suppressed the na?ve CD4+ T cell proliferation induced by the anti-CD3 stimulation in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, CD8+ T cells cultured without SK-OV-3 did not suppress na?ve CD4+ T cell proliferation. Conclusion Ovarian cancer cell can induce the suppressive CD8+Treg, which is an important link of the immunosuppressive microenvironment in ovarian cancer.

Purpose To investigate the value of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in evaluating blunt hepatic trauma and to provide experimental reference. Materials and Methods Fifteen healthy New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into groups A, B and C, with 5 rabbits in each group. Hepatic area of the rabbits in each group was stroked using a self-made mini striker with forces of 127.8 N, 213.0 N and 298.2 N, respectively, to establish rabbit models of blunt hepatic trauma. Gray-scale ultrasound (US) and CEUS were performed within 20 minutes before and after trauma. Results Hepatic capsular rupture was observed in 10 rabbits on US. Ill-defined hypoechoic areas in various degrees were observed. CEUS and time-signal intensity curve analysis showed that the normal hepatic tissue began to enhance after contrast agent injection, well-defined against non-enhanced hepatic lesions. The sensitivity of US and CEUS for blunt hepatic trauma were 66.7% (10/15) and 100.0% (15/15), respectively (P<0.05). The agreement with specimen was 40.0% (6/15) for US and 86.7% (13/15) for CEUS, respectively (P<0.05), with Kappa=0.815 for CEUS (P<0.001). Conclusion CEUS improves diagnostic accuracy of blunt hepatic trauma and accurately assesses the severity, which shows good agreement with gross specimen.

Objective: To establish an intensity-classified Chinese facial emotion image database and provide materials for emotional researches in China. Methods: Firstly, under the guidance of professional director, 22 professional dramatic actors put up seven kinds of emotion, including anger, disgust, fear, sadness, surprise, happy and calm. The process of facial emotional performance of actors were filmed by a high-speed camera. Then we made screen captures according to the intensity of emotion performed by the actors. A total of 814 black-and-white photographs with same size and gray level were made after we removed the irrelevant parts to the facial features. Each kind of emotion contains six levels of intensity scoring from 1 to 6. Totally, 112 healthy volunteers were recruited to evaluate the emotional intensity, pleasure and arousal of all images via a visual scale ranged from 0 to 100. Results: A Chinese face emotional intensity hierarchical picture library was set up, which contained 2 sublibraries. The first library was consisted of 436 images with hierarchical emotional intensity images collected from different performers. The second one was built with 640 images, in which the hierarchical emotional intensity image was collected from same actor/actress. Both image libraries had corresponding scores for intensity, pleasure, and arousal. Furthermore, both exhibited a high degree of internal consistency in reliability analysis (with a Cronbach' s alpha value larger than 0. 9). Conclusion: The present study has established an intensity-classified Chinese facial emotion image database with good recognition degree and psychological measurement attribution, which could provide materials for emotional researches in China.
