OBJECTIVETo observe cerebral protective effect of muscone (nasal administration) on traumatic brain injury model rats.
METHODSSD rats were divided into the sham-operation group, the model group, and the treatment groups according to random digit table, 50 in each group. Traumatic brain injury model was established by controlled cortical strike. Rats in the sham-operation group received surgery and anesthesia procedures only, with no strike. Muscone (1.8 mg/kg) was delivered to rats in the treatment group using in situ nasal perfusion, 30 min each time, twice daily for 7 successive days. Water content of brain tissue was detected in each group before intervention (T1), at day 3 of intervention (T2), day 5 of intervention (T3), and after intervention (T4), respectively. Expression levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) were detected using immunohistochemical analysis.
RESULTSCompared with the sham-operated group, water content of brain tissue increased (P < 0.05), and expression levels of NGF and BDNF decreased in the model group at T1, T2, T3, and T4 (P <0. 01). Compared with the model group, water content of brain tissue decreased (P < 0.05), and expression levels of NGF and BDNF increased (P < 0.01) in the treatment group at T1, T2, and T3.
CONCLUSIONNasal administration of muscone could reduce water content of brain tissue, alleviate cerebral edema, promote secretion of BDNF and NGF by olfactory ensheathing cells in traumatic brain injury rats.

Objective To study the relationship between biofilm-forming ability, distribution of quorum sensing related genes and antibiotic resistance in clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Methods The biofilm-forming ability of 94 clinical isolates was analyzed semi-quantitatively by crystal violet staining. The antibiotic resistance of the isolates was determined by K-B method.Quorum sensing related genes, lasI,lasR,rhlR and rhlI,were detected by PCR.The diffe, rences of drug resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with different biofilm-forming ability and the effects of quorum sensing related genes on biofilm-forming ability were analyzed. Results Of the 94 isolates,89(94.7%) showed biofilm-forming ability. The 89 isolates consisted of 22(23.4%) isolates with weakly positive biofilm-forming ability,44 (46.8 %) with positive biofilm-forming ability and 23 (24.5 %) with strongly positive biofilm-forming ability. The strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with different biofilm-forming ability showed different drug resistance rates to amikacin, tobramycin and gentamicin (P < 0.05).The drug resistance rate of the strains with strong positive biofilm-forming ability to amikacin was higher than that of the strains with positive and weakly positive biofilm-forming ability(P < 0.05),and the drug resistance rates to tobramycin and gentamicin were higher than those of the strains with weakly positive biofilm-forming ability(P < 0.05).Of the 94 isolates,91 strains carried lasI,lasR,rhlI and rhlR gene and 2 strains only lost lasR gene, and 1 strain lost all the 4 genes. The strains with only lasR gene deficiency or all the lasI,lasR,rhlI and rhlR gene deficiencies showed negative biofilm-forming ability, and were sensitive to conventional antimicrobial agents. Conclusion Most of the clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in this study showed strong ability of biofilm-forming ability which may correlate positively to partial antibiotic resistance. The quorum sensing related genes may affect biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of the timed “up and go” test (TUGT) on measuring functional mobility of stroke patients.MethodsNinety hemiparetic stroke patients participated in this study. The balance, gait speed and disability of patients were measured by Berg balance scale (BBS), maximal gait speed and functional independence measure (FIM) to find out the critical value of TUGT.ResultsA good relationship existed among TUGT and the BBS,gait speed and FIM (r=-0.926—-0.674,P<0.001).The percentage of independent walking of stroke patients whose TUGT scores <10s or>20s were 100% and 8.3%. The optimal cut off values of TUGT to predict the independent walking of patients were 15.2s, and in stroke group sensitivity and specificity of TUGT were 89.4% and 79.1%.Conclusion TUGT is a reliable instrument with adequate concurrent validity to measure the functional mobility of stroke patients.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the pathogenesis of globozoospermia, fertilization ability of round-headed sperm, and the application value of assisted oocyte activation in intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for the wives of glohozoospermia men.
METHODSWe collected oocytes from the wives of 2 globozoospermia patients and randomly divided them into two groups after ICSI to receive calcium ionophore A23187-activation and conventional treatment, respectively. We reviewed the relevant literature published at home and abroad, and discussed the etiology of globozoospermia, fertilization ability of round-headed sperm, and treatment options for this disease.
RESULTSQuality embryos were obtained in the A23187-activation group while no fertilized oocytes, oocyte cleavage, quality embryos, or blastular formation were found in the conventional treatment group. Both women achieved pregnancy and gave birth to healthy neonates after transfer of the quality embryos from the A23187-activation group.
CONCLUSIONCalcium ionophore A23187 can be applied to ICSI for the wives of globozoospermia men and bring about desirable clinical outcomes. Meanwhile, attention should be paid to its safety.

Chinese Journal of Neuromedicine 2011;10(5):505-508
Objective To observe the clinical effects of atorvastatin combined with clopidogrel on the prevention of carotid artery atherosclerostic plaques in aged patients with infarction. Methods Eighty aged patients with infarction, admitted to out hospital from July 2006 to September 2010, were chosen; these patients were randomly divided into observation group (n=40, giving treatment of atorvastatin combined with clopidogrel) and control group (n=40, giving treatment of treatment of Clopidogrel). The levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (CH), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), the blood viscosity and the platelet maximum aggregation rate (MAR) were measured and the plaque scores were evaluated 4, 12 and 24 w after the treatment. Results As compared with those before treatment, the levels of TG, LDL-C and MAR in the control group 24 w after treatment, and the levels of TG and CH in the observation group 12 w after treatment and the levels of TG, CH, LDL-C and MAR in the observation group 24 w after the treatment were significantly decreased (P<0.05). As compared with the control group, the observation group enjoyed significantly lower level of CH 12w after the treatment and lower levels of TG, CH and LDL-C 24 w after the treatment (P<0.05). Lower plaque scores in the observation group were noted as compared with that in the control group 24 w after the treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion Atorvastatin combined with clopidogrel can safely prevent and stabilize the carotid artery atherosclerostic plaques in aged patients with infarction.
