Oleic acid was injected intravenously into 29 dogs to induce the experimental 'Respiratory Distress Syndrome'. The chest x-ray manifestations of RDS were observed and analyzed. Correlating the x-ray findings with the findings of patho-anatomical examination, which was done on the killed dogs, the authors tried to investigate the pathogenesis of RDS. Meanwhile the diameter of the first branch of either inferior pulmonary artery was measured to determine the variations of the contractions of the pulmonary arteries. Finally the therapeutic effect of anisodamine and dexamethasone was compared. It seemed that the effect of the former was better than that of the latter from our preliminary trial.

BACKGROUND:In recent years, great progress has been achieved in the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of arterial blood vessels of normal human corpses and animals. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively analyze the tensile mechanical properties of thoracic aorta in normaly fed spontaneously hypertensive rats and salt-loaded spontaneously hypertensive rats. METHODS: Twenty spontaneously hypertensive rats were obtained and randomly divided into experimental and control groups (n=10/group). Rats in the experimental group were subjected to continuous salt loading intervention for 16 weeks. Rats in the control group were fed with normal diet and ordinary tap water. At the 16th week, 10 specimens of thoracic aorta of rats from these two groups were harvested to conduct stress relaxation experiments.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The decrease in stress at 7 200 seconds and the decrease in normalized stress relaxation function value at 7 200 seconds of thoracic aortic specimens of rats in experimental group were both lower than those in the control group (P< 0.05). These results confirm that the stress relaxation properties of thoracic aorta of normaly fed and salt-loaded spontaneously hypertensive rats change, wherein the changes in salt-loaded spontaneously hypertensive rats are more obvious.

Objective To observe the effect of a traditional Chinese medicine, BuyangHuanwu Decoction, on the ethology in rat models of post-stroke depression ( PSD) .Methods Sixty male SD rats, after open-field ethology scoring, were randomly divided into five groups ( 12 rats in each group):sham operation group, cerebral ischemic stroke group, post-stroke depression ( PSD) group, BuyangHuanwu Decoction group, and fluoxetine group. The rat PSD models were established with separately breeding and chronic unpredictable moderate stress ( CUMS ) after middle cerebral artery occlusion. Behavior changes of the rats were detected by body weight measurement, neurological scoring, sugar consumption test and open-field test. Results Compared with the sham operation group and cerebral ischemic stroke group, the body weight, sugar consumption and open-field spontaneous activity in the PSD model group were decreased, and the neurological function deficits became more severe ( P <0.01 or P <0.05 ) .Compared with the PSD group, Both BuyangHuanwu Decoction group and fluoxetine group got significantly higher scores of body weight, sugar consumption and spontaneous activity, and improved neurological function deficits(P<0.01 or P<0.05).Conclusions PSD rats exhibit abnormal behavior.BuyangHuanwu Decoction can significantly improve the behavioral impairment of PSD rats. The antidepressant effect of BuyangHuanwu Decoction is comparable to that of fluoxetine in the treatment of PSD rats.

Objective To investigate the gray matter volume differences between adult hypothyroid subjects and healthy controls using voxel-based morphometry (VBM).Methods A total of 28 untreated hypothyroid patients and 28 age and gender-matched uormal controlswere recruited. The coucentrations of their freetriiodothyronine (FT3),free theroxine (FT4),and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)were testedfrom their venous blood on the day they accepted MR scanning.High resolution 3D-datawereobtained using 3.0 T MRI scanner.VBM analysis was performed to detect the volume differences between the groups by using voxel-wise two sample t test.Multiple regression analysis was employed to analyze the influence exerted upon gray matter volume by serum FT3,FT4,and TSH concentrationof hypothyroid patients. Results Compared to controls, gray matter volumes in the bilateral superior frontal gyri, left precentralgyrus and bilateral cerebellum were decreased in hypothyroid patients (voxels 211-2 142,t=3.36-3.69,P<0.01,corrected).No significant correlation between the gray matter volume in the above-mentioned brain regions and the clinical variables (serum FT3,FT4,and TSH concentration) (P>0.05) was found in the multiple regression analysis. Conclusions VBM analysis revealed that hypothyroid patients exhibited reduced gray matter volume in multiple brain regions. It suggests that the lack of thyroid hormones can lead to the structural abnormalities in adult brain and selective gray matter atrophy in multiple brain regions.
