Objective To analyze the classification,MR manifestations, and the pathological basis of solitary necrotic nodule of the liver(SNN)in order to evaluate MRI as a diagnosing tool Methods The MR appearances of 9 cases with pathologically proved SNN were analyzed and correlated with the classification and pathological appearances.Relevant literature was reviewed.Results(1)Simple coagulative necrosis type(5 cases):The signal of lesions was hypo-intense or iso-intense on both T_1-and T_2- weighted images. After Gd-DTPA administration, the internal part of the lesions showed no enhancement, while the thin capsule of the lesions demonstrated mild or moderate delayed enhancement. These lesions, proved by pathology, were composed of central coagulative necrotic core and a peripheral hyaline fibrosis capsule.(2)Coagulative necrosis aceompanied by liquefactive necrosis type(1 case):On T_1-weighted images, the signal of hypo-intensity was found within these lesions and even lower signal intensity was found in the central area of larger lesions. On T_2-weighted images, the lesions had a bright core and a peripheral hypointensive or isointensive area. After Gd-DTPA administration, the internal part of the lesions showed no enhancement, while the thin capsule of the lesions demonstrated mild or moderate delayed enhancement. These lesions had a central coagulative necrosis core interleaved by slit- like liquefactive necrosis foci, and peripherally a thin capsule of hyaline fibrosis proved by pathology.(3)Multi-nodular fusion type,(3cases):On T_1-weighted images, the lesions were of hypointensive or isointensive signal and had multiple septa of isointensive signal. On T_2-weighted images, the lesions were of hypointensive or isointensive signal and had multiple septa of hyperintensive or isointensive signal. After Gd-DTPA administration,No enhancement was found except mild or moderate delayed enhancement found in the thin capsule and septa. These lesions were composed of central coagulative necrosis area and a peripheral hyaline fibrosis capsule with multiple internal septa proved by pathology. Conclusion MRI apperances can reflect the classification and pathological features of solitary necrotic nodule of the liver.

Objective To study the secular changes on both morphological development and nutritional status among Tibetan students, from 1985 to 2005. Methods Data from the Chinese national survey on students' physical fitness and health in 1985, 1995, 2000 and 2005 were used to analyze and find out the difference of the morphological development and nutrition status of Tibetan students aged 7-18 years in different years. Results From 1985 to 2005, the height and weight of Tibetan students had a growing trend. The height and weight of schoolboys and schoolgirls aged 7-18 years increased 3.94 cm, 5.08 kg, 2.25 cm, and 4.24 kg respectively, while the circumference decreased without significance. The prevalence rates of underweight and malnutrition in Tibetan students further went down along with the improvement of their nutritional status. However, the prevalence rates on both overweight and obesity increased continuously, affecting the health status of Tibetan students. Conclusion From 1985 to 2005, the morphological development of Tibetan students had a growing trend and their nutrition status improved. However, the prevalence of overweight and obesity continuously increased.

OBJECTIVETo study the contents of organochlorine pesticides in human bodies and residues in serum of populations with non-occupational exposure as well as to study the relationship between organochlorine pesticides in foodstuff and residues levels in serum.
METHODSA cross-section study was conducted. 107 men and 142 women who were all healthy and living in the communities were investigated from Mar. 2004 to Jul. 2004. Level of daily food exposure was estimated through questionnaires while DDTs and HCHs serum levels were detected by EC-ECD. The relationship between organochlorine pesticides contents in foods and residues in serum were analyzed by ridge regression.
RESULTSFresh fish was positively correlated to men's serum level of beta-HCH and p,p'-DDT (beta = 0.1266 and beta = 0.0595) while vegetables and fruits were negatively correlated to women's serum level of beta-HCH (beta = -0.1066). Soybean was negatively correlated to women's serum level of p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDT (beta = -0.0965 and 3 = -0.0581). Alcohol consumption was negatively correlated to men's serum level of beta-HCH and p,p'-DDE and women's serum level of p,p'-DDE (beta = -0.1315, beta = -0.1599 and P = -0.1128).Salted meat was negatively correlated to men's serum level of beta-HCH and p, p'-DDT (P = -0. 066 and P = - 0.0569).
CONCLUSIONIn this study, fresh fish might increase the body burden of organochlorine pesticides and residues while alcohol might promote the excretion of organochlorine pesticides. Pickled meat and vegetal foodstuff might contain low-level of organochlorine pesticides and residues.

Objective To investigate the toxic effect of hemin on primary cultured neurons, astrocytes, and brain capillary endothelial cells (BCECs),and the damage effect of hemin with different concentrations on the above cells. Methods (1) Primary cultured neurons, astrocytes and BCECs from the cortex of rats were exposed to different doses of hemin for 2 h,and continue culture of these cells for 24 to 96 h after withdrawing hemin was performed; the cellular morphology was examined under phase-contrast microscope; cellular survival rate was measured with Alama blue staining; and the releasing rate of lactate dehydrogenasing (LDH) was detected with regular biochemical method. (2) Primary cultured cells were exposed to different doses of hemin for 2 h,and continue culture of the cells for 4 h was performed after washing out the hemin; and then, concentrated formic acid was employed to dissociate the cells, and heme content in dissociated cells was measured with spectrophotometer. (3) Primary cultured cells was exposed to different doses ofhemin for 30,60 and 120 min, respectively, and continue culture of the cells for 4 h was performed after washing out hemin; and then, intracellular Fe3+was examined with Prussian blue staining. Results (1) Cultured neurons were injured by a low dose ofhemin (5 mmol/L) with a decreased survival rate by 40.2% and an increased LDH releasing rate by 22.2%; and the pathological changes of cellular morphology were severe after 24 h of exposure to hemin.Following the increased doses ofhemin and time of post-exposure,the cellular death and LDH releasing were increased, and the morphological changes of cells were much severe. (2) The low and medium doses of hemin (5 mmol/L and 25 mmol/L) did not induce cellular death, LDH releasing and morphological changes in astrocytes; and a high dose ofhemin (50 mmol/L) could induce a death rate of astrocytes decreasing by 52.4%, a LDH releasing rate increasing by 31% and obvious morphological changes of astrocytes; however, the injured astrocytes could regenerate fluent cellular monolayer 96 h after exposing to high dose of hemin treatment.(3) Hemin with either low or high dose did not induce any changes in cellular survival,LDH releasing and cellular morphology of BCECs.(4) The heme content in cultured neurons was significantly higher than that in astrocytes and BCECs after hemin treatment for 2 h.(5) The blue Fe3+ stained granules appeared in neurons as early as 30 min after neurons being exposed to hemin, and Fe3+ stained positive cells in neurons were significantly higher than those in astrocytes and BCECs at any dose ofhemin and any time point ofhemin treatment. Conclusion Hemin is highly toxic to neurons, but it can only injure astrocytes at a high dose and it can not induce direct damage in BCECs; free hemin could rapidly enter and accumulate in neurons, but less accumulate in astrocytes and not accumulate in BCECs.

OBJECTIVETo access the prevalence of menopause-like symptoms, and their related factors in old and middle-aged males in the area of Hefei.
METHODSThis study included 1 026 males aged over 45 years that came to the clinic for health examination. We collected their personal data, and evaluated their general health status and the results of the questionnaire investigation using the Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale.
RESULTSThe total incidence of menopause-like symptoms was 64.7% among the old and middle-aged males in Hefei area, of which 58.1% were mild, 30.9% moderate and 11.0% severe. The average AMS score was 31.2 +/- 6.8, in which the scores on psychological, physical and sexual function symptoms were 8.3 +/- 2.1, 12.4 +/- 4.8 and 9.3 +/- 4.5, respectively. Sexual function symptoms were increased significantly with the increase of age (P < 0.05), but psychological and physical symptoms showed no obvious correlation with age (P > 0.05). The main risk factors of menopause-like symptoms included age, smoking, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, but physical exercise was an important protective factor against them.
CONCLUSIONWith the increase of age, the prevalence of male menopause-like symptoms rises and sexual function declines gradually, but psychological and physical scores are not affected significantly. Age, general health status and lifestyle are closely associated with the prevalence of menopause-like symptoms among old and middle-aged males.

The biological characterization, differentiation and regeneration of hepatic stem/progenitor cells are the one of very active and interested fields. In this report, intravenous injection of human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) cells into the BALB/c-nu and SCID mice, an animal model for transplantation and liver injury, was reported. Using of flow cytometry and tissue typing (HLA), it was found that the HUCB cells were survived in mouse liver for 9 weeks. After separation from perfused liver, HUCB cells were detected by hematopoietic colonies (CFU-GEM M) in hepatocyte culture. It was concluded that the transplanted HUCB hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells can be survived in the liver over a long period of time.
