·AIM: To investigate the visual recovery factors in patients with complex traumatic and non-traumatic retinal detachment. ·METHODS: According to the history of ocular trauma before admission, 135 patients with complex retinal detachment were divided into traumatic group ( n=66, 66 eyes) and non-traumatic group (n=69, 69 eyes). The results of visual recovery and complications were compared between the two groups. Logistic regression was used to analyze the related factors of visual recovery in the two groups. ·RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the recovery rate between the two groups within 24h after surgery (77. 3% vs 78. 3%, P>0. 05), and there was no significant difference in the total incidence of complications at 3mo after surgery(18. 2% vs 17. 4%, P>0. 05). Multifactorial Logistic regression analysis showed significant correlation between age, injury type, time since retinal detachment, rage of retinal detachment, preoperative vitreous blood, proliferative vitreoretinopathy ( PVR ) and postoperative visual recovery in patients with complex traumatic retinal detachment ( P < 0. 05 ); age, time since retinal detachment, rage of retinal detachment and macular status were significantly associated with visual recovery in patients with complex non-traumatic retinal detachment (P<0. 05). ·CONCLUSION: Age, time since retinal detachment and rage of retinal detachment were significantly associated with traumatic and non-traumatic retinal detachment. The injury type, preoperative vitreous hemorrhage, PVR were significantly correlated with the visual recovery of traumatic retinal detachment patients. The condition of macular was significantly associated with the visual recovery of non-traumatic retinal detachment patients.

Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2011;31(2):177-180
Differences in design and implementation of clinical research on hypertension treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion were analyzed in this article so as to provide experiences to the design of clinical research on its treatment. Through document retrieval, it can be acquired that results of high quality clinical researches on treatment of hypertension with acupuncture and moxibustion have already been published. However, limitations in terms of sample size calculation, stochastic method, implementation of the blind method, selection of the control group and report on implementation process still existed in domestic documents. Therefore, high quality design proposals which not only in compliance with the features of acupuncture-moxibustion, but also accepted by modern medicine should be established with the combination of the advantages of acupuncture-moxibustion and clinical features of the disease. Moreover, standardizations on measuring the blood pressure, sample size calculation, selection of the control measurements, stochastic method and implementation of the blind methods should be established as well.

OBJECTIVETo observe the protective effect of Panax Ginseng (PG), Aconitum Carmichaeli (AC), and their combination (PG-AC) on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.
METHODSRat's ischemia reperfusion injury model was established by ligating left anterior descending coronary artery for 60 min followed by reperfusion for 240 min. Forty male rats were randomly divided into five groups, the sham operation group, the model group, the three treated groups. The three treated groups were treated with PG, AC and PG-AC respectively by given the drugs 10 min before ischemia reperfusion, and to the sham operation group and the model group, saline was given instead. The infarction area, pathologic changes of myocardial tissue (under light and electron microscopy), activity of creatine phosphokinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in serum, content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in myocardial tissue were observed to evaluate the protective effect of treatment.
RESULTSThe area of acute myocardial infarction was lesser, activity of LDH and CK were lower in the three treated groups than those in the model group. Content of SOD was significantly higher and that of MDA was markedly lower in the former three than those in the model group. Light and electron microscopic examination showed that the necrotic degeneration and pathologic changes of myocardiocytes in the treated groups were significantly milder than that of the model group. As comparing the effect between the three treated groups, PG-AC showed the best, and insignificant difference was shown between PG and AC.
CONCLUSIONBoth PG and AC, and their combination have obviously protective effects on myocardium against ischemia reperfusion injury, which of PG-AC is superior to that of PG or AC used singly.

This study is to investigate protective effect of safflor yellow B (SYB) against vascular endothelial cells (VECs) injury induced by angiotensin-II (Ang-II). VECs were cultured and divided into six groups: control group, Ang-II group, Ang-II + SYB (1 micromolL(-1)) group, Ang-II + SYB (10 micromolL(-1)) group, Ang-II + SYB (100 micromolL(-1)) group and Ang- II + verapamil (10 micromolL(-1)) group. Except control group, all of VECs in other groups were treated with Ang- II at the final concentration of 0.1 micromolL(-1). Mitochondria membrane potential (MMP) and free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) were measured by laser scanning confocal microscopy, and mitochondria complex IV activity was detected by BCA method. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in VECs were analyzed by fluorescence detector and apoptosis of VECs was observed by flow cytometer. Caspase 3 was determined by Western blotting method. Comparing with control group, Ang-II was able to increase [Ca2+]i and ROS level, decrease MMP level, inhibit complex IV activity and enhance caspase 3 activity in VECs, as a result, enhance apoptosis of VECs. But SYB could significantly reduce the result induced by Ang- II relying on different dosages (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). SYB was able to eliminate the effect of Ang-II on VECs via regulating [Ca2+]i, mitochondrial structure and function and inhibiting apoptosis.
