A bacterium which can effectively degrade LAS (Linear Sodium Alkylbenzenesulfonate) was isolated from washing powder manufacturing effluent and was preliminarily identified as Corynebacterium jeikeium GZ6. The bacterium can degrade LAS up to till 700 mg/L, and the optimum pH, temperature and concentration of LAS are 7.0, 30℃ and 400 mg/L, respectively. The biodegradation rate can reach 98.7% after 24 hours'cultivation in the suitable conditions. Experiments also showed that some heavy metal ions such as Hg2+ , Co2+ , Cd2+ can differently inhibit the degradation of LAS.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the impact of nicotine- and tar-free cigarette smoke extract (fCSE) on the serum testosterone (T) level and erectile function of male rats.
METHODSWe randomized 30 male SD rats to three groups of equal number to receive subcutaneous injection of PBS (1.0 ml / 300 g body weight per day), fCSE (1.0 ml/300 g body weight per day), and reduced glutathione hormone (GSH, 200 mg per kg body weight per day) in addition to fCSE (fCSE + GSH), respectively, all for 8 weeks. Then we evaluated the erectile function of the rats by measuring the maximal intracavernous pressure (MICP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), ICP/MAP ratio, time of stimulation to MICP (Tmax), and cavernosal filling fate (CFR). We determined the serum T level, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) , malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the cavernosal tissue, and also observed the morphological changes of the corpus cavernosum.
RESULTSCompared with the controls, the rats of the fCSE group showed obvious decreases in the levels of serum T ([5.37 ± 1.43] vs [3.22 ± 1.11] μg/L), NOS ([2.90 ± 0.27] vs [1.67 ± 0.18] U/mg) , and SOD ([18.41 ± 1.09] vs [13.36 ± 1.18] U/mg prot) and erectile function-related indexes MICP ([85.92 ± 6.36] vs [58.99 ± 10.76] mmHg), MICP/MAP (0.86 ± 0.09 vs [0.56 ± 0.08]), and CFR (2.14 ± 0.44 vs 0.89 ± 0.44), but markedly increased Tmax ([29.90 ± 5.78] vs [42.90 ± 8.56]s), with a positive correlation between the serum T level and CFR (r = 0. 364, P < 0.05). Masson staining revealed a lower ratio of the corpus cavernosum smooth muscle tissue to collagen fiber in the fCSE group (0.27 ± 0.04) than in the control (0.98 ± 0.12). Compared with the fCSE group, the fCSE + GSH group exhibited significantly improved MICP ([58.99 ± 10.76 ] vs [77.95 ± 7.71] mmHg), MICP/MAP (0.56 ± 0.08 vs 0.77 ± 0.09), and CFR (0.89 ± 0.44] vs 1.76 ± 0.42) and shortened Tmax ([42.90 ± 8.56 ] vs [32.10 ± 5.84 ] s). The ratio of the corpus cavernosum smooth muscle tissue to collagen fiber was higher in the fCSE + GSH than in the fCSE group (0.77 ± 0.09 vs 0.27 ± 0.04) but still lower than in the control (0.98 ± 0.12).
CONCLUSIONNicotine- and tar-free cigarette smoke extract reduces the serum T level and erectile function of rats, which is related to oxidative stress. Antioxidant therapy can improve erectile function but has a limited value for morphological protection of the penile tissue.

To investigate the possible mechanisms underlying the difference of NMDA and non-NMDA receptors in spinal nociception originating in skin and muscle, release of aspartate (Asp) and glutamate (Glu) in the spinal dorsal horn was detected by stimulation of cutaneous and muscular nerves in cats using microdialysis technique. Asp and Glu were increased respectively by (323±55)% and (169±16)% following stimulation of cutaneous nerve, but by (150±16)% and (218±42)% respectively following stimulation of muscular nerve. Asp increase was approximately three times higher than that of Glu following cutaneous nerve-stimulation (P<0.01), while Glu increase was approximately twice as high as that of Asp following muscular nerve-stimulation (P<0.05). It is likely that nociceptive cutaneous and muscular inputs preferentially elicite release of Asp and Glu respectively, resulting in a functional differentiation of NMDA and non-NMDA receptor in the mediation of different nociceptive information.

OBJECTIVETo explore the application value of detection of Hepcidin together with indicator of iron overload on clinical diagnosis and treatment of MDS with iron overload by measuring Hepcidin and iron load indices of transfusion dependent myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients.
METHODSEnzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), radioimmunoassay and colorimetry were used to determine the Hepcidin, serum ferritin (SF) and serum iron (SI) levels of 106 serum samples from 68 cases of transfusion dependent MDS patients, 30 serum samples of MDS patients without transfusion and 60 serum samples of controls.
RESULTSFor MDS group, Hepcidin level in blood transfusion < 9 U subgroup was significantly higher than that in control group \[(583 ± 50) µg/L vs (175 ± 35) µg/L\] and there was a strong positive correlation between Hepcidin levels and SF (r = 0.976), but no correlation between Hepcidin and SI (r = 0.284); Both Hepcidin and SF level in transfusion 9 ∼ 24 U subgroup was significantly higher than those in control group \[(665 ± 80) µg/L vs (175 ± 35) µg/L; (1445 ± 275) µg/L vs (112 ± 26)µg/L\]; whereas for SI level, there was no difference between transfusion 9 ∼ 24 U subgroup and the control group. Hepcidin did not correlate with SF or SI; For blood transfusion > 24 U group, all of Hepcidin, SF and SI levels were higher than those in control groups \[(703 ± 64) µg/L vs (175 ± 35) µg/L; (2587 ± 352) µg/L vs (112 ± 26)µg/L; (20 ± 4) µg/L vs (14 ± 4) µmol/L\], Hepcidin negatively correlated with SF and SI (r = -0.536; r = -0.456). Hepcidin levels of RARS patients were significantly lower than RAEB patients \[(260 ± 40) µg/L vs (442 ± 51) µg/L\], and there was no significant difference between RARS group and control group regardless of the number of blood transfusion.
CONCLUSIONBoth Hepcidin and SF levels in MDS patients regardless of transfusion dependent or not, or the number of blood transfused were higher than those of normal controls, the increase of Hepcidin can not synchronize with the increase of SF level due to the increased blood transfusion, when blood transfusion > 24 U, Hepcidin level showed a negative relationship with SF and SI, reflecting the decreased ability of Hepcidin to inhibit body iron absorption during the increase of blood transfusion, which finally would lead to iron overload. We can predict the occurrence of iron overload in transfusion dependent MDS patients by dynamic monitoring concentration of Hepcidin.

OBJECTIVETo discuss the treatment methods of humeral supracondylar fracture in children with neurovascular complications.
METHODSNinety-six children (59 males, 37 females) with humeral supracondylar fractures were treated by surgery from February 2002 to November 2007, with the mean age of 6.4 years old (ranged from 4 to 16 years). Seventeen symptoms of nerve damage occurred in 16 cases, including radial nerve injury in 5 cases, median nerve injury in 7 cases,of which 1 cases with ulnar nerve injury, ulnar nerve injury in 5 cases; 13 patients had symptoms of vascular injury such as pulse weakness and hands coldness. The patients accompanied by nerve, blood vessel injury symptoms were all treated with open reduction and internal fixation.
RESULTSEighty-five patients were followed up with an average duration of 11 months(ranged from 6 to 18 months). Seventy-three patients had incision healing at the first stage and other 12 patients had incision healing at the second stage. All the 85 patients had no complications such as incision infection and functional disturbance of elbow joint. Among 5 patients with radial nerve injury, 3 patients had symptoms disappeared completely at 3 months after operation; one patient underwent exploration lysis at 3 months after operation and the symptoms disappeared at 5 months after operation; another 1 patient with iatrogenic injury of radial nerve had nerve function recovered at 3 months after releasing plaster compression. Among 7 patients with median nerve injury, 6 patients had nerve function recovered completely at 6 months after operation; another 1 patient combined with ulnar nerve injuries had nerve function recovered at 9 months after exploring of nerve at the second stage. Five patients with ulnar nerve injury had nerve function recovered completely at 6 months after operation. Preoperative symptoms of radial artery pulse weakness and cold hand in 13 patients disappeared after fracture reduction.
CONCLUSIONThe ulnar nerve should be explored during the operation at the first stage of supracondylar fracture. Wether the median nerve, radial nerve and blood vessel be explored or not should be decided by preoperative examination results. The preoperative EMG and Doppler ultrasound examination is not a routine examination before surgery.
