Objective: To determine the cognitive function and MRI-based measurement of MTL structures in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and to find a sensitive cognitive marker or specific MRI-based measurements for early diagnosis of AD. Method:Fifty-two AD patients, 27 VD (vascular dementia) patients and 35 aged matched normal control were recruited. The cognitive functions were evaluated with Alzheimer disease assessment scale-Cognitive portion (ADAS-Cog), Wechsler memory scale-revised and Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). MTL structures, including hippocampal formation, amygdala and parahippocampal gyrus, were measured by MRI volumetric measurements. Result: Compared with VD patients and healthy controls, there was more pronounced reduction of performance on the main cognitive domains in AD patients, which indicated the diffused deficits of AD, including learning and memory, comprehension, language, orientation and concentration. The atrophy of MTL structures was more prominent in AD patients. A moderate diagnostic accuracy of 83.3% was achieved by Fisher's linear discriminant model, which comprised the scores of word recall, recall of test instructions, commands, constructional praxis and orientation in ADAS-Cog, and the performance on picture recall, visual recognition visual reproduction, logic memory and touch test in Wechsler memory test and part of memory in MMSE. In diagnose of AD, MRI based volumetry of left temporal horn of lateral ventricle and amygdalohippocampal complex had the sensitivity of 78.4% and accuracy of 77.1%. When cognitive indicators were combined with MRI based measurement, the diagnostic accuracy increased to 90.5%. Conclusion: AD produces more diffused cognitive deficit and severer atrophy of MTL structure. Combination of cognitive indicator with MRI based measurement can improve accuracy in diagnosis of AD.

Recent studies have showed that nanotechnology pro-vides a new revolution for the treatment of complex, refractory autoimmune or inflammatory diseases.Nanoparticles combined with specific autoantigens can restore the peripheral tolerance and reduce immunopathological damage in a variety of autoimmune disease models. In this paper,we review the progress and trends of nanomedcine for treatment of autoimmune or inflammatory dis-eases as immunomodulatory therapy from the physical and chemi-cal characteristics of nanoparticles, the route of administration, and the role and mechanism of induction or reconstitution of im-mune tolerance, which provides a theoretical basis for seeking new treatments to treat inflammatory diseases.

Tibetan medicineLiu-Wei Mu-Xiang(LWMX) pill, a traditional compound medicine, has special therapeutic effects in the treatment of gastrointestinal anabrosis, especially chronic gastric ulcer. It has been widely applied in the clinics in Tibetan region. Nevertheless, the current standards for quality control are insufficient and incomplete, which makes it difficult to ensure its quality. This review focused on two closely related perspectives, which were the effective material basis and quality control, to summarize and review the recent advancement in relevant studies. This review also pointed out that the burning questions for Tibetan medicine standards were the origin confusion and“different medicines with the same name”. It offered meaningful suggestions for the consideration to improve its quality standards.

Objective To study the effects of chrysophanol(Chry)on NO of brain tissue and anti-anoxia in mice with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Methods A total of 75 SPF Kunming mice were randomly allocated into five groups:sham operation group, ischemia-reperfusion group, high-dose group (Chry 10.0 mg ·kg-1), medium-dose group (Chry 1.0 mg ·kg-1) and low-dose group (Chry 0.1 mg ·kg-1). Using improved Himori method, cerebral ischemia reperfusion-injury model was produced in conscious mice by temporarily obstructing bilateral common carotid arteries. The neurological function was measured according to the Bederson scoring standard. The mice were subjected to decapitation for hypoxia tolerance test. The gasping time was measured by anoxia tolerance test in beheaded mice. The level of NO in cerebrum was detected. Results Chrysophanol can decrease the level of NO in cerebrum of mice with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury and prolong the gasping time in beheaded mice with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury [low-dose group, (14.6±1.2) s; medium-dose group, (16.4 ± 1.2)s; high-dose group, (17.4 ± 1.1)s; ischemia-reperfusion group, (13.2 ± 1.0)s, P<0.05]. Conclusion The protective effects of chrysophanol on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury are involved in decreasing the content of NO in brain tissue and anti-anoxia in mice.

Objective Atrioventricular block (AVB) is a common and serious arrhythmia. At present, there is no perfect method of treatment for this kind of arrhythmia. The purpose of this study was to regenerate cardiac atrioventricular conduction by autologous transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and explore new methods for therapy of atrioventricular block. Methods Eleven Mongrel canines were randomized to MSCs transplantation (n=6) or control (n=5) group. The models of permanent and complete AVB in 11 canines were established by ablating His bundle with radiofrequency technique. At 4 weeks after AVB, bone marrow was aspirated from the iliac crest. MSCs were isolated and culture-expanded by means of gradient centrifugal and adherence to growth technique, and differentiated by 5-azacytidine in vitro. Differentiated MSCs (1ml, 1.5×107cells) labeled with BrdU were autotransplanted into His bundle area of canines by direct injection in the experimental group, and 1ml DMEM in the control group. At 1-12 weeks after operation, the effects of autologous MSCs transplantation on AVB models were evaluated by electrocardiogram, pathologic and immunohistochemical staining technique. Results Compared with the control group, there was a distinct improvement in atrioventricular conduction function in the experimental group. MSCs transplanted in His bundle were differentiated into analogous conduction system cells and endothelial cells in vivo, and established gap junction with host cardiomyocytes. Conclusions The committed-induced MSCs transplanted into His bundle area could differentiate into analogous conduction system cells and improve His conduction function in canine AVB models.

Objective To evaluate the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) on peripheral blood and adenoid in children with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and adenoidal hypertrophy ,to investigate the mechanism of IL-6 on the occurrence and development of CRS .Methods A total of 216 cases of hypertrophic adenoids were collected ,including 95 CRS children with hypertrophic adenoid (CRS group) ,70 children with allergic rhinitis and hypertrophic adenoid (AR group)and 51 children with hypertrophic adenoid (control group) .The plasma IL-6 concentrations were detected by ELISA ,and the expression and distribution of IL-6 in adenoid tissue was detected by immunohistochemistry .Results The plasma IL-6 level in CRS group was (49 .8 ± 8 .3)pg/mL ,significantly higher than that of in control group (33 .6 ± 6 .9)pg/mL and in AR group (35 .9 ± 5 .6)pg/mL ,differences had statistic significance ( P< 0 .05) .However ,there was no statistically significant difference between AR group and control group .Meanwhile ,the presence of IL-6 in adenoid tissue was mainly seen in inflammation cells and fibroblasts while less in mesenchymal cells ,there were statistical differences between CRS group and control group/AR group (P< 0 .05) ,but no statistical difference between AP group and control group(P> 0 .05) .Conclusion Among children with CRS ,expression of IL-6 whether in peri-plasma or in focal tissue was higher than those without CRS ,demonstrating that IL-6 may play an important role in the pathogenesis and developemnt of CRS in chil-dren .
