OBJECTIVETo investigate the association between the morphological features of biopsy-diagnosed high grade intraepithelial neoplasia in the gastric mucosa and the postoperative pathology.
METHODSFifty-one patients with biopsy-diagnosed high grade intraepithelial neoplasia in the gastric mucosa were retrospectively analyzed. Thirty-three patients underwent surgery. The morphology of lesions under endoscopy and histopathological findings of the surgical specimens were investigated.
RESULTSOf the 51 patients, 43 had superficial lesions similar to early gastric cancer under endoscopy, 8 were similar to advanced carcinoma. In the 33 surgical cases, high grade intraepithelial neoplasia of gastric mucosa was confirmed on postoperative pathological examination in 13 (39.4%) patients, adenocarcinoma was identified in the remaining 20 patients (60.6%), including 14 early gastric cancers and 6 advanced carcinomas. Thirteen cases with high grade intraepithelial neoplasia confirmed postoperatively were superficial elevated or flat lesions less than 20 mm.
CONCLUSIONSPatients with biopsy-diagnosed high grade intraepithelial neoplasia in the gastric mucosa have a high risk of cancer. Thus aggressive follow-up and appropriate surgical interventions are recommended to avoid misdiagnosis.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2006;31(6):452-455
OBJECTIVETo provide reference for breeding Scutellaria baicalensis from different germplasms, and to explore their genetic diversities and different strains.
METHODThe RAPD method was applied to the study on S. baicalensis from different germplasms by use of 14 random primers about 10 bp, and SAPD-analysis of 34 S. baicalensis from different germplasms was carried out by using the method of withingroups-linkage in SPSS 10.0.
RESULTS14 among 115 primers were selected to amplify about 165 segments of DNA. Among them, 132 segments of DNA, 80.0% of the total, can represent genetic of diversities of S. baicalensis. According to RAPD analysis, 34 germplasms of S. baicalensis were classified into A, B, C and D categories.
CONCLUSIONS. baicalensis from different germplasms shows abundant genetic diversities. Germplasms from Shandong like Mengyin 3, Menyin 2 and Pingyi have close distance (0.315) in genetic background, which can be chosen for breeding of cultivated. Though genetic characters are similar in the morphology, the geological distribution of S. baicalensis and its morphology have not certain correlation. The complex genetic background of S. baicalensis indicate that the work of the selective breeding and management for breeding of S. baicalensis have to be strengthened.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effect and toxicity of oxaliplatin combined with capecitabine (Xeloda) as a second-line chemotherapy regimen for patients with advanced gastric cancer.
METHODSTwenty-four patients with advanced gastric cancer who had been treated by multiple chemotherapy regimens presenting poor responses were allotted. LX regimen (oxaliplatin 85 mg/m(2) in 2-hour infusion on D1 and D15, capecitabine 1250 mg/m(2)/d divided in two daily doses given from D1 to D14) was adopted. The cycles were repeated every 28 days. All patients received two or more cycles.
RESULTSAll 24 patients were evaluated after having received 2 to 6 cycles of chemotherapy, totally 92 cycles. The overall response rate was 29.2% (including 2 CR, 5 PR, 10 NC and 7 PD). The time to tumor progression (TTP) was 2 to 18 months (median 5 months), and duration of remission was 4 to 14 months (median 8 months). The major toxicities were bone marrow suppression and nausea/vomiting.
CONCLUSIONOxaliplatin combined with capitabine is effective as a secondary line regimen for patients with advanced gastric cancer. This protocol is active and well tolerated. Further clinical studies are warranted.

Chinese Journal of Traumatology 2003;6(2):99-103
OBJECTIVETo find out the optimal approach to decompress externally the severe injured brain and to avoid possible complications caused by external decompression.
METHODS68 patients who underwent external decompression after traumatic brain injury were admitted into Tianjin Medical University General Hospital for cranioplasty from 1995 to 2001. Complications were retrospectively investigated and analyzed in all patients. The findings were compared between the patients who accepted the decompressive craniectomy in our hospital and in local hospitals. chi(2)-test was employed for statistical analysis and complication evaluation.
RESULTSLarge craniectomy definitely caused some side effects to patients. Among various complications, several of them showed significantly high incidence (P<0.05) in patients who underwent the decompressive operation in local hospitals such as shunt-dependent hydrocephalous, subdural fluid collection, and CSF leakage from scalp incision. The rest of the complications had no remarkable difference (P<0.05) between the two groups including dilation or/and migration of lateral ventricle underlying the cranial defect, skin flap concavity, encephalomalacia of the decompressive area, seizure and infection.
CONCLUSIONSTo reduce the incidence of iatrogenic side effects, surgical craniectomy should be performed according to the strict indication and standard and any abuse should be avoided.

OBJECTIVETo study whether combined detection of the methylation status of vimentin, sFRP1, and HPP1 gene can increase the positive methylation rate in colorectal cancer.
METHODSTissue samples were collected from 90 patients with colorectal cancer, 60 patients with adenomatous polyp, and 20 healthy controls. DNA was extracted and the methylation status of vimentin, sFRP1, and HPP1 gene was detected by Methylation-specific PCR (MSP). The relationship between clinicopathologic features of colorectal cancer and gene methylation was analyzed.
RESULTSThe methylation rates of vimentin, sFRP1, and HPP1 were 66.7%, 68.9%, and 72.2% in colorectal cancer, 53.3%, 55.0%, and 50.0% in colorectal adenomas, and 0, 0, and 5.0% in healthy controls, respectively. The methylation of each of the three genes in colorectal cancer tissues was higher than colorectal adenomas and healthy controls(P<0.05). The diagnostic sensitivity by combining three methylation markers was 93.3% in colorectal cancer, 76.7% in colorectal adenomas, which was higher than the sensitivity using single gene testing(P<0.05). No significant associations existed between the methylation status of the three genes and clinical characteristics including sex, age, tumor location, lymph node metastases, distant metastasis, and TNM stage(P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONSDNA methylation levels of vimentin, sFRP1 and HPP1 are significantly higher in colorectal cancer tissue. Combined detection significantly improves the positive rate of methylation, and may be used as early diagnosis method for colorectal cancer.
