A bacterium which can effectively degrade LAS (Linear Sodium Alkylbenzenesulfonate) was isolated from washing powder manufacturing effluent and was preliminarily identified as Corynebacterium jeikeium GZ6. The bacterium can degrade LAS up to till 700 mg/L, and the optimum pH, temperature and concentration of LAS are 7.0, 30℃ and 400 mg/L, respectively. The biodegradation rate can reach 98.7% after 24 hours'cultivation in the suitable conditions. Experiments also showed that some heavy metal ions such as Hg2+ , Co2+ , Cd2+ can differently inhibit the degradation of LAS.

OBJECTIVE To explore the protective effect of polysaccharides from Salvia Chinensis Benth. (PSSC) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and D- galactosamine (GalN)- provoked mouse acute liver failure (ALF) and the possible molecular mechanism. METHODS Kunming mice were randomly divided into four groups: normal control, model, model+PSSC 30 and 100 mg·kg- 1 groups. PSCC was given once a day and for a week. To establish an ALF model, mice of model and PSSC groups were ip injected with LPS 10 μg·kg-1 and GalN 700 mg·kg-1 at the end of PSSC treatment. The microscopic structure of the liver was detected by HE staining. Serum and hepatic biochemical parameters of glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic- pyruvic transaminase (GPT), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH) were detected by colorimetric methods. The relative content of hepatic reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured by DCFH-DA fluorescent probes. Levels of cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β(IL-1β) and IL- 6 in the serum and liver were detected by ELISA. Activity of caspase 3 in liver homogenates was detected by aspase 3 activity assay kit. RESULTS Compared with normal control group, in the liver of model group, hepatocytes were arrayed in disorder, cytoplasm of hepatocytes shrank, and boundaries between cells were fuzzy, the infiltration of a large number of inflammatory cells and tissue hemorrhage could be detected, pathological scores were elevated significantly (P<0.01), levels of MDA and ROS in the liver of ALF model mice were elevated to 2.2 and 4.3 times that of the normal control, respectively (P<0.01), the level of GSH decreased to 51% (P<0.01), and the activities of SOD, CAT and GSH- Px declined to 74%, 36% and 42%, respectively (P<0.01). Levels of TNF- α, IL- 1β and IL- 6 in the serum and liver of model group were increased (P<0.01), and caspase 3 activity was increased to 5.3 times that of the normal control (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the number of surviving mice in PSSC groups increased, liver pathological scores declined (P<0.01), levels of MDA and ROS increased (P<0.01), levels of GSH, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 in the liver and serum declined (P<0.01), and caspase 3 activity decreased (P<0.01). CONCLUSION PSSC is able to alleviate LPS and GalN-induced ALF in mice. Inhibition of hepatic oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cell apoptosis is possibly implicated in the protective effect of PSSC.

Background:Successful antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the infectivity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).We conducted a study to predict the potential effect of ART on the spread of HIV in Chaoyang District,Beijing,China, using the Asian Epidemic Model (AEM).Methods:The AEM baseline workbook was used to determine the current infection status and to project the future spread of HIV under current conditions. We changed the input on the ART coverage from 2014 to 2025 and also modified the treatment eligibility in the AEM intervention workbook,in order to allow for analysis of the projected downstream impact of ART.Results:By gradually increasing the ART coverage rate from 29.7% (rate of 2013) to 40.0%,50.0%,60.0%,70.0%,80.0%,and 90.0% (at CD4+ ≤350 cells/μl),and by changing the dates of coverage from 2014 to 2020,the number of new infections showed a cumulative decline of 0.60%,1.59%,2.94%,5.33%,9.32%,and 14.98%,respectively.After 2020,the projected rates of infection rebounded slightly,so with the exception of the years with very high coverage (90.0%),new infections continued to decrease. When we changed the initial threshold of therapy to CD4+ cell counts ≤500 cells/μl,new infections decreased 6.00%,11.64%,15.92%,2 1.11%,26.92%,33.05%,and 38.75%,respectively,under varying ART coverages. Conclusion:Our study demonstrates that the early initiation of ART for people living with HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has a positive effect in slowing the spread of HIV.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of electro-acupuncture (EA) at points along Foot Yangming Channel on metabolite of ulcerative colitis (UC) rats' cerebral cortex and to identify key metabolites by referring to Pi/Wei-brain related theory in Chinese medicine (CM).
METHODSThe UC rat model was set up by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) method. Male SD rats were randomly divided into the model group and the EA group, 13 in each group. Another 13 rats were recruited as the blank control group. Rats in the blank control group and the model group received no EA. EA was performed at Zusanli (ST36), Shangjuxu (ST37), and Tianshu (ST25) for 5 days by using disperse-dense wave. Then all rats were sacrificed. Their recto-colon and the ileocecal junction were pathomorphologically observed by light microscope and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Cerebral cortexes were extracted. Water-soluble and lipid-soluble brain tissue metabolites were respectively extracted for metabolic research using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR).
RESULTSEA could obviously improve the general condition of UC model rats, decrease the value of DAI, reduce the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the intestinal tract, stabilize structures such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and so on (P <0.05). 1HNMR analysis showed that in the model group, contents of glutamic acid, cholesterol, very low density lipoproein (VLDL) in the pallium obviously decreased, while alanine and low density lipoprotein (LDL) significantly increased. After EA, levels of lactic acid, glutamic acid, total cholesterol (TC), and VLDL all increased, and levels of alanine and LDL decreased. All indices were approximate to those of the blank control group.
CONCLUSIONEA at Foot Yangming channel was found to have some effect on metabolites in the brain tissue of UC model rats, which had specific metabonomic material basis and mechanism based on the Pi/Wei-brain related theory.
