BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a gold standard to treat degenerative cervical syndrome. However, with the increasing application and follow-up data of ACDF, its adverse effects have been shown. In the past 20 years, artificial cervical disc replacement has been widely used in clinic, and the therapeutic effect is favorable.OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of cervical disc replacement versus ACDF for cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy.METHODS: A computer-based online search of Medline (1966/2009-06), Embase (1966/2009-06), CBM (2009-06) and CNKI(2009-06), as well as Cochrane Back Group, and Cochrane library were performed to collect randomized controlled trials of cervical disc replacement versus ACDF. Data were evaluated by RevMan4.2.2 for Meta analysis.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: A total of 15 studies were included. Meta-analysis indicates that no differences were found in the mean operation time, mean blood loss, mean hospital stay, satisfaction rate, and complication between two groups; the reoperation rate of the disc replacement group was lower than ACDF group in two years postoperation; disc replacement group was more efficient in improving cervical function indexes than ACDF group, and the postoperative SF-36 scores were significantly more than ACDF group. Moreover, postoperative motion range of affected segment was significantly greater in the disc replacement group than the ACDF, and the motion rage of adjacent segment was significantly increased in patients underwent ACDF compared with disc replacement treatment. However, there may be bias, more randomized controlled trials are required.

Anammox bacteria can perform anaerobic ammonium oxidation,a long missing process which contributes 30%~50% to dinitrogen gas in marine nitrogen cycling. The potential role of anam-mox bacteria coupling with ammonium oxidizing bacteria and archaea will benefit to elaborate the complex mechanism of marine nitrogen cycling.Furthermore, the unique cell and genomic characteris-tics make anammox bacteria an important model microorganism to explore the bacterial evolution. Here we reviewed the current status of molecular ecology of marine anammox bacteria and give a perspective into the future based on our understanding of the literature and our own work.

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy of transvaginal hysterectomy(TVH) and laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy(LAVH).Methods The study retrospectively analyzed 75 cases of TVH(TVH Group) and 69 cases of LAVH(LAVH Group) from January 2004 to October 2004.All the patients were diagnosed as having benign uterine diseases, without uterine prolapse and less than 20 gestational weeks. Results Compared with the LAVH Group, the TVH Group had a shorter operative time(83.6?19.4 min vs 133.7?48.1 min;t=-8.317,P=0.000),less blood loss(116.4?55.3 ml vs 186.1?292.1 ml;t=-2.028,P=0.000),and lower total cost of operation(4733.27?577.81 yuan vs 7471.30?1042.17 yuan;t=(-19.702),P=0.000).There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative pyrexia between the TVH Group(4.0%,(3/75)) and the LAVH Group(8.7%,6/69)(?~2=0.670,P=0.413).Conclusions As compared with laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy, transvaginal hysterectomy has shorter operative time, less blood loss, and lower cost of operation.

Objective To compare the clinical performance of the self-etching and the phosphoric acid etching adhesive system for restoration of non-carious Class V restorations for a period of two years. Methods There were 37 patients with at least one pairs of similar-sized non-carious cervical lesions participated in the study.120 restorations were placed by one operator,of which 60 with phosphoric acid etching adhesive system(Spectrum TPH,Prime& Bond)and 60 with self-etch(Clearfil AP-X,SE Bond). The restorations were evaluated by ?2 statistics at the baseline,6th,12th and 24th month according to the modified Ryge"s USPHS criteria. Results At two years,106 teeth were reviewed in 33 patients. The retention rates for self-etching adhesive system were 89% and for phosphoric acid etching adhesive system 77%.The percentage of the retention rates of both adhesive systems was not found to be different when calculating the failure rates. No cases in both adhesive systems showed slight marginal discoloration problems. Some cases for each adhesive system had slight color change after the same period. Conclusions The performance of both adhesive systems is excellent during this two-year clinical trial. The self-etch adhesive system exhibites slightly better coloar match than the phosphoric acid etching system.

Chinese Journal of Dermatology 1995;0(04):-
The skin biopsy specimens from fifteen patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis were studied. Thirteen out of fifteen cases were positive to S100 protein antibody and peanut agglutinin, but negative to Mac387 and lysozyme antibodies, and three cases were positive for CD1 antibody by immunohistochemistry. Birbeck granules were demonstrated in one of the three cases by electron microscopy. Ten cases were analysed by flow cytometry, six cases (60%) were aneuploid, DNA index was 1.38?0.32, proliferative index was 38.69%. These results showed that these pathognomonic histiocytes were of Langerhans cell origin and their potential malignancy could not be ruled out.
