OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of Yiqi Huayu Recipe on neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) in neuromuscular junctions during nerve regeneration in rats with lumbar nerve root compression. METHODS: The rats with lumbar nerve root compression were given Yiqi Huayu Recipe for 10, 20 and 30 days respectively. The distribution of N-CAM in neuromuscular junctions of soleus muscle in rats was examined with immunohistochemical method and confocal laser scanning microscopy technique. The acetylcholine receptor (AChR) was visualized with fluorescein-conjugated alpha-bungarotoxin (alpha-BTX). The overlap areas of N-CAM and AChR sites were measured with NIH image technique. RESULTS: The aggregates, sprouts and extensions of N-CAM in the neuromuscular junctions and the overlap areas of N-CAM and AChR sites in the Yiqi Huayu Recipe-treated group were all better improved than those in the untreated group. CONCLUSION: The expression of N-CAM is regulated according to the state of innervation for muscles. Yiqi Huayu Recipe may accelerate this nerve regeneration process.

Objective To investigate the safety and efficacy of protective measures(hydration treatment)during perioperative period of interventional therapy for renal function of gerontic patients with coronary artery disease(CAD)complicated by chronic renal insufficiency(CRI).Methods The relation between hydration therapies and the renal function of 168 CAD patients(≥60 years old)complicated by CRI were analyzed. These patients were divided into three groups:in the group A,patients underwent selective coronary angiography(SCA)with conventional treatment during interventional perioperative period(IPP);in the group B,patients underwent SCA and treated with the NaCl plus low dose NaHCO3 during IPP;in the group C,patients underwent percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI),and meanwhile treated with the same dose NaCl and NaHCO3 as the group B during IPP.Results Coronary interventions were successful in all 168 patients.Contrast medium associated nephropathy(CAN)was found in 30 patients, and incidences of the CAN were 17(27.4%)in the group A,3(7.5%)in the group B and 10(15.2%)in the group C,respectively. The accompanying diseases and characteristics of the patients also effected the incidence of CAN:the CAN incidence of patients with hyperlipidemia was significantly higher than that with normal cholesterol(P<0.001);patients with diabetes was significantly higher than that with normal serum glucose(P<0.001);patients with stenosis of renal artery was significantly higher than that with normal renal artery(P<0.001);patients with heart failure(grade Ⅲ~Ⅳ)was significantly higher than that with the grade Ⅰ~Ⅱ(P<0.001).Conclusion The hydration treatment with the NaCl plus low dose NaHCO3 during IPP can protect renal function and increase tolerance for gernotic CAD patients complicated by CRI during IPP,and improve prognosis.

Objective To evaluate the value of ice-compression therapy in mice skeletal muscle after acute crush injuries and correlate treatment effect with different compression time by MR DTI. Methods Forty Weistar mice were randomly divided into 4 groups by random number table method: control group (A), 5 min compression time group( B), 15 min compression time group(C) and 30 min compression time group(D). Diffusion tensor imaging examinations were performed before, immediately after, 24, 48 and 72 hours after injuries. ADC and FA values were calculated by fiber tracking tool. The morphological changes were confirmed by histopathology, and immunohistochemical methods were used for the assessment of Desmin expression with mean of A value. Statistical analysis by LSD-t test and Spearman rank correlation. Results (1) For every group before injuries, ADC valueswere (1.38±0.04) ×10-3,(1.38±0.08) ×10-3, ( 1.34 ± 0. 05 ) × 10 -3, ( 1.36 ± 0. 09 ) × 10 -3 mm2/s respectively, FA value were 0. 46 ± 0. 05,0. 45 ±0. 03,0. 45 ± 0. 05,0. 48 ± 0. 04 respectively. ADC values increased significantly and FA values reduced in each group immediately after injuries compared with pre-injury values. ADC values were ( 1.84 ±0. 10) × 10-3, ( 1.79 ±0. 09) × 10-3, ( 1.55 ±0. 07) × 10-3, ( 1.57 ±0. 04) × 10 -3mm2/s respectively,FA value were 0. 21 ±0. 04, 0. 26 ±0. 03, 0. 31 ±0. 02, 0. 30 ±0. 04 respectively. ADC values were still higher and FA values lower than pre-injury values at 24 hours after injury in A, B groups. ADC values were (1.54±0.13) ×10-3, (1.57±0.13) × 10-3mm2/s, FA value were 0.25 ±0.03, 0.26±0.02. (2)DTT showed fibers distorted and the number of fiber bundles reduced, some separation and displacement in each group immediately after injury. C, D groups improved more than A, B groups over time. (3) The disorder arrangement of skeletal muscle cells with edema and filaments separation were found in HE staining after injury, but the degree mitigated in C, D groups. Desmin staining became lighter with fuzzy edge immediately and 24 hours after injury, and changed more than 72 hours after injury. (4) The correlation coefficients of ADC, FA values and A value were respectively - 0. 789 and 0. 763 ( P < 0. 05 ). Conclusions DTI can non-invasively reflect the pathological changes after acute crush injuries of muscles of mice and ice compression therapy. It is a useful method to guide ice compression treatment after acute crush injuries.

Objective To evaluate the effects of different ratios of medicine dosage for sevoflurane and propofol on postoperative cognitive function in aged rats. Methods Sixty healthy male Wistar rats, aged 18-20 months, weighing 600-650 g,were divided into 6 groups (n =10 each) using a random number table:control group (group C),sevoflurane anesthesia group (group S),propofol anesthesia group (group P) and different ratios of mmedicine dosage for sevoflurane and propofol groups (group SP1,group SP2 and group SP3).Normal saline 10 ml was infused intravenously in group C.Group S inhaled 3.1% sevoflurane.Propofol was infused intravenously at a rate of 40 mg · kg-1 · h-1 in group P.In group SP1,2.4% sevoflurane was inhaled, and propofol was intravenously infused at a rate of 10 mg · kg-1 · h-1.In group SP2,1.8% sevoflurane was inhaled, and propofol was intravenously infused at a rate of 20 mng · kg-1 · h-1.In group SP3,1.2% sevoflurane was inhaled, and propofol was intravenously infused at a rate of 30 mg · kg-1 · h-1.Duration of anesthesia was 2 h in all the groups. After loss of righting reflex, open reduction and internal fixation was performed after tibial fracture was induced in the other five groups except group C.At 1 day after anesthesia,Y-maze test was performed, and the time spent on the novel arm and total number of entries into each arm were recorded, and fear conditioning test was carried out for determination of the rate of freezing time to reflect the cognitive function. The rats were sacrificed after behavioral testing, and the hippocampus was removed for determination of occludin, matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 expression by Western blot. Results Compared with group C,the time spent on the novel arm was significantly shortened, the total number of entries into each arm and rate of freezing time were decreased, the expression of occludin was down-regulated,the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was up-regulated in the other five groups, and the most unmarked change in the indices mentioned above was found in group SP2 (P< 0.05 or 0.01).Conclusion Different ratios of medicine dosage for sevoflurane and propofol can induce postoperative cognitive decline, and inhaling 1.8% sevoflurane and infusing propofol 20 mg · kg-1 · h-1 produce little influence on postoperative cognitive function in aged rats.
