Abstract: Toxoplasma gondii, an opportunistic pathogenic protozoan, is widely distributed worldwide and can cause
zoonoses, which is a serious threat to human health. Nowadays, the relationship between T. gondii infection and
neuropsychiatric diseases has attracted researchers' attention increasingly. T. gondii infection is related to the pathogenesis of
many neuropsychiatric diseases by affecting the nervous system, such as schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's disease, and so
on. This review will focus on the relationship between T. gondii infection and neuropsychiatric diseases and summarizes the
possible mechanisms of disorders resulting from T. gondii infection. It is expected that the study on the related pathogenic
mechanism of T. gondii will lead to new therapeutic directions and feasible solution for the clinical treatment of
neuropsychiatric diseases caused by T. gondii infection.
2.Multiple-factor analysis of CT signs of PTC greater than 1 cm in diameter

Objective Based on contrasting CT signs distributed in PTC greater than 1.0 cm in diameter and nodular goiters(NG),multiple logistic regression analysis is adopted to make a statistics of what diagnostic value that CT signs have for PTC.Methods Retrospective analysis of CT findings of 288 PTC with diameter >1.0 cm in 277 cases confirmed by histology,including nodular form,cookie bite symptom,microcalcifications and en hanced narrowing/blurring was performed,and compared with CT signs of 276 NG in 231 cases with diameter>1.0 cm.Analysis of various CT signs were performed by multivariate Logistic regression method,and the sensitivity,specificity of positive CT signs and their combinations in PTC diagnosis were calculated.Results Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that irregular nodules,cookie bite symptom,microcalcifications and enhanced arrowing/hlurring were often observed in PTC,with OR values of 17.249(95% CI 8.954-33.227),23.697 (95% CI 11.653-48.188),4.536 (95% CI 2.031-10.132),4.672 (95% CI 8.954-8.999),respectively.The sensitivity,specificity of single CT sign diagnosing PTC were 31.3%-82.3% and 83.3%-93.1%,respectively.The sensitivity,specificity of two CT signs combinations diagnosing PTC were 24.0%-70.5% and 96.7%-100%,respectively.The sensitivity,and specificity of three or four CT signs combinations diagnosing PTC were 19.1%-61.5% and 99.6% -100%,respectively.Conclusions Although the nodule form,cookie bite symptom,microcalcifications and enhanced narrowing/blurring are the important signs for diagnosing PTC,the OR values of various signs had great difference.The accurate identification of these differences and various CT signs combinations can further improve the specificity of diagnosing PTC,thus reducing misdiagnosis.
3.Community based rehabilitation of cognitive deficits in stroke patients

Objective To investigate the effects of cognitive interventions (CIs) in the context of communi- ty based rehabilitation (CBR) on cognitive deficits (CDs) in stroke patients.Methods Ninety-two stoke patients with CDs were randomly divided into a CI group and a control group.All patients were treated with conventional CBR.In addition,the patients in the CI group were also treated with special intervention therapy.The patients in both groups were assessed with the neurological and cognitive status examination (NCSE) for cognitive functioning, the FCA for motor function and the BI for their ability in the activities of daily living.Results The NCSE,FCA and BI scores in the cognitive intervention group after treatment were significantly higher than those before treatment and also significantly higher than those in the control group after treatment.Conclusion CIs can not only improve CDs,but also enhance recovery of motor function and ADL.
4.Inhibitory effect of Kangjia Pill on thyrocyte proliferation in rat goiter model.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the inhibitory effects of Kangjia Pill (KJP) on the cell proliferation in rat goiter model induced by methimazole (MMI).
METHODSFifty-six Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: the normal group, MMI model group (MMI), low dose of KJP group (LKJP), and high dose of KJP (HKJP). Except the normal group (20 rats), the other groups (12 rats in each) were given 0.04% (w/v) MMI through the drinking water until the end of the experiment. One week later, the rats in the LKJP and HKJP groups were given KJP by gastrogavage at the dose of 250 mg/(kg x d) and 1,000 mg/(kg x d), respectively for 12 weeks. The relative thyroid weight (mg/100 g body weight) of each rat was accessed. The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was determined by immunohistochemistry, and the correlation analysis between the PCNA positive thyrocytes and the relative thyroid weight was performed. The expressions of PCNA and cyclin D1 were examined with Western blotting.
RESULTSAfter KJP treatment for 12 weeks, compared with the MMI group, the relative thyroid weight of the HKJP group decreased significantly, and the positive thyrocyte populations of PCNA in the two KJP groups reduced markedly (all P<0.05). The correlation analysis showed that PCNA was closely correlated with thyrocyte proliferation (r=0.685, P<0.05). KJP significantly decreased the protein expression of PCNA and cyclin D1 in the thyroid specimens (P<0.05), the high dose showed better effects.
CONCLUSIONKJP played a therapeutic role via inhibiting cell proliferation in the rat goitrous glands.

5.Expression of bone-related genes in bone marrow MSCs after cyclic mechanical strain: implications for distraction osteogenesis.

AIMUnderstanding the response of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to mechanical strain and their consequent gene expression patterns will broaden our knowledge of the mechanobiology of distraction osteogenesis.
METHODOLOGYIn this study, a single period of cyclic mechanical stretch (0.5 Hz, 2,000 microepsilon) was performed on rat bone marrow MSCs. Cellular proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was examined. The mRNA expression of six bone-related genes (Ets-1, bFGF, IGF-II, TGF-beta, Cbfa1 and ALP) was detected using real-time quantitative RT-PCR.
RESULTSThe results showed that mechanical strain can promote MSCs proliferation, increase ALP activity, and up-regulate the expression of these genes. A significant increase in Ets-1 expression was detected immediately after mechanical stimulation, but Cbfa1 expression became elevated later. The temporal expression pattern of ALP coincided perfectly with Cbfa1.
CONCLUSIONThe results of this study suggest that mechanical strain may act as a stimulator to induce differentiation of MSCs into osteoblasts, and that these bone-related genes may play different roles in the response of MSCs to mechanical stimulation.

6.Efficacy and Safety of Lenalidomide in the Treatment of Multiple Myeloma: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUNDLenalidomide has emerged as an important treatment for patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, its role in the management of MM is still controversial and requires further clarification. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy and safety of lenalidomide for MM using a meta-analysis.
METHODSWe searched the electronic databases including: PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Center Register of Controlled Trials. Seven randomized clinical trials were identified, which included a total of 2357 patients with MM who received lenalidomide-containing, noncontaining lenalidomide regimens or placebo as induction therapy or maintenance therapy. The outcomes included overall response (OR) rate, complete response (CR) rate, 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate, 3-year overall survival (OS) rate, and different types of treatment-related adverse events. We calculated the risk ratios (RRs) as well as their 95% confidence intervals of these outcomes and pooled the results using RevMan 5.2 software.
RESULTSFor patients with previously untreated MM, OR rate and CR rate was significantly higher in lenalidomide-containing group than the control group. For relapsed or refractory MM patients, lenalidomide-containing regimens significantly improved the OR rate, CR rate, 3-year PFS rate and 3-year OS rate. With regard to MM patients after autologous stem cell transplantation, lenalidomide maintenance therapy significantly improved 3-year PFS rate but did not result in improved 3-year OS rate. In terms of toxicities, lenalidomide therapy has a higher rate of Grade 3-4 grade cytopenias, infection, deep-vein thrombosis, and diarrhea. Furthermore, the incidence of second primary malignancies was significantly higher in the lenalidomide group.
CONCLUSIONSThe lenalidomide-containing regimens as induction therapy clearly increased response rates and improved intervals of survival with acceptable toxicity rates for patients with MM. However, when physicians choose to use the lenalidomide as maintenance therapy, whether the benefits outweigh the risks should be taken into account.

7.Two-micron laser resection of the prostate-tangerine technique for the treatment of large-volume prostate.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the clinical efficiency and safety of two-micron laser resection of the prostate-tangerine technique (TmLRP-TT) for the treatment of large-volume ( > 70 ml) prostate in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODSThis retrospective analysis included 80 BPH patients with the prostatic volume larger than 70 ml, all treated by TmLRP-TT. We comparatively analyzed the levels of hemoglobin and serum sodium before and after surgery, recorded intra- and post-operative com- plications, and followed up the patients at 6 and 12 months after operation for International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QOL), maximum flow rate (Qmax), and postvoid residual urine volume (PVR).
RESULTSAll the operations were successfully completed. The mean hemoglobin decreased (0.68 +/- 0.43) g/dl intraoperatively, but no apparent reduction was observed in serum sodium. Lower urinary tract symptoms were relieved significantly in all the cases. At 12 months after surgery, IPSS was decreased by 73.89% as compared with the baseline (20.03 +/- 6.9 vs 5.23 +/- 3.59), QOL by 64.55% (4.09 +/- 1.19 vs 1.45 +/- 1.36), and PVR by 79.30% (97.31 +/- 57.90 vs 20.14 +/- 24.20 ml), while Qmax increased by 140.42% ([8.04 +/- 3.62] vs [19.33 +/- 3.28] ml/s). The incidence of complications was low either intraoperatively or during the 12 months after operation.
CONCLUSIONTmLRP-TT is a safe and effective surgical endoscopic approach to the treatment of large-volume prostate in BPH patients.

OBJECTIVETo study the gene expressions in the stromal cells of the human prostate peripheral zone (PZ) in men of different ages.
METHODSWe primarily cultured stromal cells from the normal prostate PZ of men aged 23 -32 (young group) and 56 -75 years (old group), profiled the gene signature of the PZ cells by cDNA microarray, and defined the differential gene expression patterns by hierarchical cluster analysis. Among the differential genes, we selected and confirmed up-regulated genes by quantitative real time PCR (Q-PCR), and identified their protein coding by Western blotting.
RESULTSThere were significant differences in the gene expressions of the PZ cells between the old and young groups. Based on the fold change ratio of > or = 2 or < or = 0.5, 509 up-regulated and 188 down-regulated genes were selected in the PZ cells. A subset of significantly differential genes influencing the growth of adjacent epithelial cells were identified, including HGF, IGF2, IGFBP5 and MMP1 in the old males.
CONCLUSIONStromal cells in the prostate PZ were more active in older males in promoting the malignant progression of adjacent prostate epithelial cells, which might be due to the increased expression of extracellular paracrining mediators.

10.Allogeneic peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for post-operatively treating acute non-lymphocytic leukemia patient complicated with renal cell carcinoma: one case report.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of allogeneic hematopoietic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (allo-PBHSCT) for post-operative therapy of acute non-lymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) patient complicated with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). One ANLL patient complicated with RCC underwent an myeloablative HLA-identical relative allo-PBHSCT after RCC operation. The conditioning regimen consisted of total body irradiation, cyclophosphamide and cytarabine. Graft versus host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis regimen composed of cyclosporine A, myco-phenolate mofetil and short course of methotrexate. The results indicated that the patient achieved engraftment 16 days after transplantation with full donor-type chimerism detected by STR-PCR at 30 and 100 days after transplantation. No acute or chronic GVHD and any severe complication developed. As of March 2007, the patient remains without disease at follow-up of 44 months. In conclusion, allo-HSCT procedure is feasible and effective for post-operative therapy of ANLL patient complicated with RCC without severe toxicity.
