Chinese Journal of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2010;45(8):623-627
Objective To develop a quality of life scale for patients with congenital external and middle ear malformation, and to explore its reliability and validity. Methods The initial quality of life scale for patients with congenital external and middle ear malformation was constructed based on quality of life scales from home and abroad. A total of 140 patients with congenital external and middle ear malformation had been recruited in the study. After pretest and item sifting, the quality of life scale was constructed, and its reliability and validity were evaluated. Results Eighteen-item quality of life scale for patients with congenital external and middle ear malformation was constructed, which included three parts: physiological function, psychological status and social interaction. The retest reliability was 0. 878; split-half reliability coefficient and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were 0.927 and 0. 899, respectively. The results of factor analysis showed satisfactory construct validity. The reliability and validity of this scale was consistent with the demands of psychometrics. Conclusion Congenital external and middle ear malformation quality of life scale is believable and effective, which can be used for clinical practice.

Objective To evaluate cardiac function in fetuses with intracardiac hyperechogenic focus (ICEF) by tissue Doppler imaging(TDI).Methods Fetal echocardiography was performed in 335 fetuses for evaluation of fetal cardiac function with ICEF by TDI,two-dimensional,M-mode and pulsed Doppler echocardiography. The ratio between early ventricular filling(E-wave)and active atrial filling(A-wave)peak velocities at the level of the atrioventricularvalves as an index of ventricular diastolic function.TDI mode was used to measure the mitral and tricuspid valve annulus including Em,Am and Sm.The characteristics of fetal echocardiography of 119 fetuses with ICEF were compared with 137 normal fetuses. Results E/A and Em/Am were significantly lower in fetuses with ICEF than in control fetuses.Positive correlation was found between the velocity of orifice and annulus in controls. No systematic differences were found in cardiac dimensions, ventricular shortening fraction,Doppler and TDI systolic indices between groups. Conclusions TDI is feasible and reproducible to evaluate fetal ventricular function, and it can avoid the influence of fetal heart rates and preloading.Fetuses with ICEF show lower Em/Am values in the second to third trimester echocardiography,it might indicate cardiac diastolic dysfunction.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) and survivin protein in human gastric carcinoma, and to evaluate their clinical implications.
METHODSThe expressions of VEGF-C and survivin protein in tumor tissues, matched para- tumor tissues from 97 cases with gastric cancer and normal tissues form 20 normal controls, were determined by immunohistochemistry. Their relationships with clinicopathological parameters were analyzed.
RESULTSThe positive rate of VEGF-C and survivin protein in tumor tissues (66.0% and 57.2%) was significantly higher than those in matched para-tumor tissues normal tissues (P< 0.05). There were no significant differences in VEGF-C expression considering tumor size, localization, histological grade, venous invasion, and distant metastasis (P > 0.05), while its expression was correlated with serosal infiltration, lymphatic invasion, lymph node metastasis and TNM stage III-IV (P< 0.05). The survivin expression was significantly related with serosal infiltration, lymphatic invasion, regional lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and TNM stage III- IV (P< 0.05), but not with histological grade, localization, venous invasion, and tumor size (P > 0.05). The 1, 3 and 5-year survival rates of the patients with positive VEGF-C or survivin protein were significantly lower than those of the patients with negative VEGF-C or survivin (P< 0.05), respectively. In additional, the expression of VEGF-C was positively correlated with survivin expression in gastric carcinoma (P< 0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe expressions of VEGF-C and/or survivin may be indicators for poor prognosis of gastric carcinoma.

A full length cDNA fragment encoding for human thrombopoietin receptor c-Mpl has been amplified by RT PCR from the total RNA of human HEL cells. The complete sequence of the cloned cDNA was determined and is identical to that previously reported. Then the fragment was subcloned into the mammalian expression vector pcDNA3 and the resulting plasmid is designated as pcMPL. K562 cells, which do not express c-mpl, were transfected with pcMPL and pcDNA3, respectively. The transformants were selected with G418 and then tested by Northern and Southern blotting. A group of engineered cell lines stably expressing c-mpl have been obtained, which will facilitate further research on the signaling mediated by c-Mpl.

OBJECTIVETo determine the effect of composite restoration on reinforcement of weakened tooth structure and the possible mechanism.
METHODSSixty freshly extracted non-carious maxillary premolars were collected and divided into 6 groups with 10 specimen in each group. MOD cavities (buccolingual width: 2.8 to 3.2 mm; palatal cusp width: 2.0 mm; cusp height: 5.0 mm) were prepared individually. Group 1 was prepared and not restored (control). The other 5 groups were restored with silver amalgam alloy (group 2), Z250 without bonding (group 3), F2000 (group 4), Z250 (group 5) and Z350 nanocomposite (group 6) (3M ESPE) respectively. The fracture resistance of the tested teeth was determined by applying a vertical splitting load through a specially shaped steel rod at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The data were analyzed by ANOVA.
RESULTSThe average fracture resistance of the 6 groups was: (245.29 +/- 39.49) N (group 1), (255.09 +/- 42.14) N (group 2), (267.34 +/- 31.56) N (group 3), (293.90 +/- 33.42) N (group 4), (337.81 +/- 32.63) N (group 5) and (349.08 +/- 32.93) N (group 6). There was no significant difference between the group 1, group 2 and group 3. The fracture resistance of group 4, group 5 and group 6 was higher than that of group 1 and group 2 (P < 0.05). Significant difference was noted between group 5 and group 3 (P < 0.01). The fracture resistance of group 4 was much lower than that of group 5 and group 6 (P < 0.01). No significant difference was found between group 5 and group 6.
CONCLUSIONSThe use of composite increased the fracture resistance of the tooth with an MOD restoration. This effect was related to the adhesive force, polymerization shrinkage stress and the elastic modulus of the composite.
