To describe and evaluate the morphologic changes and the different expression of cell-specific or correlating protein molecules during cell growth, immunocytochemistry and morphologic observations were done on retinal pigment epithelial(RPE) cells obtained from several culture conditions. These include culture time, spatial or cell density, transdifferentiation, and presence of growth factors. The human fetal and porcine RPE cells were cultured with and without individual growth factor or in combinations inchlding extracellular matrix (ECM), Insulin, basic fibroblatio growth factor (bFGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF). Mouse monoclonal anti-human, or anti-mouse antibodieg with or without species cross reactlvity against the intermediate filament proteins (cytokeratin, vimentin, GFAP) were used. To determine RPE-specific molecules of cytokeratin, nine commercially available antibodies, representing subclones of Moll's catalog number 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, 17, 18, 19 were applied. The morphological changes and the proliferation of cells started after their attachment on the culture plate as soon as they lost pigment granules. The epithelial cells like fibroblasts occurred in the area where the cellular density was low, and finally, their shape was restored to their original phenotype when the cellular connuency was achieved. The degree of proliferation and the duration of achieving confluency of cells were dependent on whether ECM and growth factors were added in media or not. Cells with the epithelial morphology were positively stained with anticytokeratine antibodies, especially with clone 19, 18, 17, 8 and 7 in human RPE cells; with 19, CAM 5.26 (8/18) in porcine cells. The fusiform or digitating cells of sparse density also expressed vimentin strongly through out all stages, whereas GFAP was not expressed at any stage in either species.

Though the incidence of paragonimiasis has been remarkably decreased since 1970, it is still not a rare disease in Korea. Major problems in the diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis on chest radiography are its differentiation from pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer. Chest radiographic findings have been described in detail, but little have been reported on CT findings. We reviewed CT findings of 10 patients with pulmonary paragonimiasis. The characteristic CT findings were similar to those on chest radiography, such as air-space consolidation (70%), nodular mass (50%), pleural effusion (40%), cystic lesion (30%), small low density within the mass (30%), linear density (20%), pneumothorax(20%), and burrow track (20%). CT depicted the cystic lesions and the burrow tracks more clearly and showed the small worm-retaining cysts within the mass that were not detectable on chest radiography. In conclusion, all of these CT findings are useful in the diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis especially when differentiation from tuberculosis or lung canceris difficult on chest radiography.

Bone materials diggd up from the Haemi nameless martyrdom holy place burial sites were severely broken into fragments of various size, clay matrix filled the bone marrow cavities, grass roots were spreaded into the periosteum and the fragments were very soft enough to be flaken. To make permanent specimens, bony fragments impregnated within unsaturated polyester resin with catalyzer MEKP, promotor 8% cobalt octoate, and UV absorber. Permanent specimens were so very transparent that all the macroscopic structures can be observed, and they were hard enough not to be broken or cracked. This method of preserving bony fragments is considered to be used in archaeologic preservation and in making teaching materials of various human organs or tissues.

Exploratory analysis was conducted in a health screening data which had been collected in residents of Taegu city in 1986 to seek out items of serum chemistry associated with hypertension. Six-hundred residents mere than 20 years of age were sampled by the multistage cluster sampling method. Because blood sampling and blood pressure measurements were possible in 384 residents of 600, the rest of 216(36%) were replaced with the healthy visitors to the Department of Health checkup, matched with age and sex. Fivehundred eighty subjects were used in the defined above systolic blood pressure 141mmHg and/or diastolic pressure 91mmHg. The most common age group was under 29 years of age in both sexes, with 103(38.3%) in males and 125(40.2%) in females. Mean body weight of males was Hypertensives were 24(8. in males and 21(6.8%) in females. The items of serum chemistry which showed p values less than 0.25 were glucose, albumin, total cholesterol, ALP and AST in males and glucose, creatinine, albumin, total cholesterol, AST and ALT in females. After controlling age and body weight, glucose and AST showed slightly decreased regression coefficients(beta=0.030, S.E.=0.018, beta= 0.021, S.E.=0.012, respectively) and p values 0.09, 0.08 respectively while albumin, total cholesterol and ALP showed substantially larger p values than unadjusted ones in males. After controlling age and body weight, total cholesterol only remained statistically significant (beta=0.015, S. E. =0. 007, p=0.04). These results suggested that certain items of serum chemistry might be associated with hypertension.

The study was conducted from May to July in 1995 to investigate lifestyle variables associated with anemia in some female workers of the six large plants in Taegu. Cases were selected by a doctor based on symptoms and physical exmination and controls were matched according to age limits (?) and plant employed. The final subjects analyzed were 385 excluding. 36 who had underlying diseases associated with anemia or many missing values. Anemia was defined by the blood hemoglobin level less than 12 g/dL. Anemic subjects were 190(49.4%) with nonsignificant age distribution between cases and controls. Univariate logistic regression showed that there was no statistically significant difference in sociodemographic and occupational variables. Number of pad used during menstruation (odds ratio, OR=1.03, 95% Confidence interval ei,1.00-l-1.05) was the only significant among the menstruation-related variables. None of the lifestyle variables were significant but those who consume more than 4 cups of coffee a day vs. none and animal iron intake showed borderline statistical significance with the ORs 2.60 and 0.99, respectively. After controlling for marital status, native place and number of pad with the multiple logistic regression, those who consume more than 4 cups of coffee a day vs. none showed statistically significant OR 2.93(95% CI 1.01-8.49). Animal iron intake and diet to lose weight indicated borderline significance with ORs 0.99(p=0.06) and 1.47(p=0.09), respectively. These results suggest that there are some anemia-associated lifestyle variables and these variables may be important for the behavior modification to prevent anemia in female workers.

The usefulness of laser therapy in the central serous chorioretinopathy has been the debate among ophthalmologists since two decades ago. From June 1985 to June 1988, we studied 86 person's 94 eyes of central serous chorioretinopathy prospectively who agreed to be followed-up by periodic visits to our center for over 6 weeks at least. Those were divided into two groups: laser-treated(63 eyes) and not-treated(31 eyes), follow-up examinations were done regularly at first, 3rd., 6th. week, 3rd. and 6th. month as checking visual acuity and fluorescein angiography for the documentations. In terms of each records, visions were improved(more than 2-lines in same acuity chart) in 37(59%) eyes, stationary(change in less than 2-lines) in 24(38%) eyes, overall 6l(97%)eyes of laser-treated group: whereas 7(23%), 20(64%),27(87%) respectively in control group(p<0.01). Anatomical cure rates(no dye leakage or only late simple stain on the points of previous leak) were 60(95%) eyes versus 19(61%) eyes(p<0.005).
