BACKGROUND: In the course of the study of keratin expression in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus, several cells in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus were positively stained with CAM 5.2 antibody, which is known to be specific for the lower molecular weight cytokeratin and used as a marker of Merkel cell. OBJECTIVE: This study was intended to verify that CAM 5.2 positive cells found in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus are Merkel cells and to understand the meaning of CAM 5.2 positive j cells in the epidermis of nevus sebaceus. METHODS: The immunohistochemical stainings with CAM 5.2 and antibody to epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) performed on specimens of normal skin, epidermal nevus, nevus sebaceus and some appendage tumors. In order to confirm the nature of CAM 5.2 positive cells, the distribution of those were compared to that of Merkel cells and double labeling with CAM 5.2 and neurofilament was performed. RESULTS: CAM 5.2 positive cells were also found in trichilemmoma developed associated with nevus sebaceus and the epidermis of normal paimoplantar skin. CAM 5.2 positive cells were also stained with antibody to EMA on serial sections cut from the same tissue blocks. The association of CAM 5.2 positive cell and nerve fiber was also demonstrated. CONCLUSION: CAM 5.2 positive cells are seemed to be Merkel cells and their presence in the covering epidermis of nevus sebaceus suggests to the epidermis of nevus sebaceus may not be nevoid proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes.

Limb-body wall malformation complex(LBWC), also know as the amniotic band syndrome, is a poorly defined, sporadic group of congenital anomaly characterized by a collection of protean fetal malformation, deformation and disruption. Accurate diagnosis is often difficult because of its variable presentation pattern and the absence of exactly same case. We report two autopsy cases. One revealed body wall, cardiac, and craniofacial anomalies with anencephaly, and amniotic adhesive band attached to craniofacial defect of the fetal part without evidence of amniotic rupture. The other exibited abdominal wall defect with omphalocele, visceral, postural, and limb anomalies together with neural tube defect in the lumbosacral region. The pathogenesis of this syndrome was discussed in detail.

The purpose, of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of porcelain on tensile bond strength. To accomplish this purpose, this study was carried out with 120 samples which were divided into 12 groups with each 10 samples, and the first group was not surface treated, groups 2 through 5 underwent single surface treatment, and groups 6 through 12 underwent compound surface treatment. The results were as follows: 1. In statistic, all the single surface-treated groups showed higher tensile bond strength than the non surface-treated group and the sandblasted group showed the highest tensile bond strength as 10.34+/-2.50MPa. 2. All the compound surface-treated groups showed no noticeable difference in the tensile bond strength(9-11.5MPa). 3. In statistic, no significant difference was found between the sandblasted group and the compound surface-treated groups. 4. There was no fracture of porcelain while testing in this study. Above study demonstrated that compound surface treatment or sandblasing, if used single surface treatment, should be employed to guarantee successful clinical application.
