Objective: In hospitals, the most recent medical information paper delivered by the hospital pharmacy is essential for obtaining information about the newest therapies and/or avoiding adverse effects of medicines.  To improve the medical information paper (hereafter, Medical News), we investigated the dissemination of Medical News delivered monthly by the Pharmaceutical Department in Oami Hospital.
Methods: Questionnaires about Medical News were distributed to each occupational category working in Ohami Hospital, and collected during June and July 2010.
Results: Responses were obtained from 127, including 19 doctors (full-time and part-time).  Ninety (70.9%) knew about Medical News, and 75 (59.1%) had read it.  It was revealed that there were differences in the familiarity with to Medical News among job classifications, and articles described on the same Medical News.
Conclusion: It insufficient to satisfied to provide drug information as a one-way provision by Medical News; however, as there are differences in the information required for each job, it is difficult to deliver a large number of copies in the small-scale hospital.  Overlooking the most up-to-date information about medicine and medical devices can lead to serious problem.  We have to review the information and provide important and accurate drug information to the staff in our hospital.

In 1996 we started an early exposure program of nursing and care for medical school freshmen at University of Tsukuba. The program consisted of out-of-hospital practice and in-hospital practice; 195 medical students completed the program in the 1999-2000 academic year. We analyzed students' questionnaires about satisfaction with the program after each practice and studied better settings for early exposure. Students were randomized to three out-ofhospital settings (nursing home, facilities for the elderly, and home-visit nursing) and also randomized the order of the practice (in-hospital or out-of-hospital first). The mean satisfaction score for setting was the highest for the home-visit nursing and lowest for nursing homes. The mean satisfaction score for order of practice was higher when in-hospital practice was done first.

We report a case of a ruptured aneurysm in a patient in her 90's who was treated by coil embolization and returned to her independent life after discharge. A 95-year-old woman with a diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) of Hunt & Kosnik Grade II was treated by coil embolization, ventricular drainage, and a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. The ventricular drainage was assembled as a closed system using a newly developed one-way ball valve to regulate the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow. With this system the patient was able to assume any posture and perform any movement she wished. The patient was freed from the physical constraint involved in conventional ventricular drainage. Early rehabilitation during the ventricular drainage would be useful to prevent pneumonia and muscle atrophy.

The need for medical team care is increasing because of advances in medical care and changing national needs. For more than 20 years medical students at the University of Tsukuba have participated in medical team care practice before bedside learning during the third trimester of their 4th year. The objective of this practice is to understand patients from the nurses' point of view and to learn cooperation between doctors and co-medical staff. We analyzed students reports to study what they had learned. A total of 326 items in 11 categories were specified in the free-response part of the reports. The largest category was “nursing/nurses” and the second largest was “communication/human relations.” The results show that the students learned points other than the General Instruction Objectives and that the practice was extremely effective.

We assessed the relationships between lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) in middle and old-aged women and dietary habits, especially in their youth (about 18-25 years) and physiologic factors (height, weight, menarche, menopause, etc.). The subjects were 90 women at age 45-87 [63.5±9.5 (mean±SD) years] who visited our outpatient clinic of osteoporosis. Of them, 83 women had already ceased menstruation. Quantitave computed tomography (QCT) was used for measurements of the BMD of the trabecular bone in the third lumber vertebra (L3 expressed in mg/cm³ of CaCO₃), where pronounced changes associated with osteoporosis occur early.
There were significant negative correlations between age or menarcheal age and BMD of L3. Significant positive correlations were found between height or weight at the present and L3, but there was no correlation between body mass index (BMI) and L3. Significant positive correlations were noted between the values subtracted height at the present from height in the youth and L3. There were no correlations between frequency of pregnancy and delivery or outdoor life hour and L3. High milk-consumers in their youth (milk-drinking≥5 days per week) had higher L3 than low milk-consumers (milk-drinking≤2 days per week), and women, who had ate small fish 3 days or more per week in their youth, showed significantly higher L3 than thoes who had 2 days or less per week. We concluded that there are negative correlations between age or menarcheal age and L3 and positive correlations between height or weight and L3, and that low intake of milk and small fish in the youth may influence BMD in later years, leading to osteoporosis.

The purpose of this study was to introduce our patient-specific bioactive porous titanium implant manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM) and to establish the efficacy and safety of the implant for stand-alone anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) based on a prospective clinical trial. We designed a customized ACDF implant using patient-specific data and manufactured the implant using SLM. We produced a bioactive surface through a specific chemical and thermal treatment. Using this implant, we surgically treated four patients with cervical degenerative disc disease and evaluated the clinical and radiological results. We achieved successful bony union in all but one patient without autologous bone grafting within 1 year. We observed no implant subsidence during the follow-up period, and all clinical parameters improved significantly after surgery, with no reported implant-related adverse effects. Our customized bioactive porous titanium implant is a safe and promising implant for stand-alone ACDF.

The dysphagia diet for hospitalized patients is necessary to ensure their physical stability, and various viscous materials are used for liquid balance. The aim of this study was to evaluate time-dependent modulation of viscous material solutions, measured using the Sine Wave Vibro Viscometer. We also developed an original viscosity index based on the relationship between material concentration and stable viscosity at 5 min after mixing, as stated in the Japanese Dysphagia Diet 2013 recommended by the Japanese Society of Dysphagia Rehabilitation Dysphagia Diet Committee. Comparison of the concentration of viscous materials in the viscosity range 50-150 mPas showed that minimum and maximum concentration was 0.43% and 1.06%, respectively, and these estranged approximate twice. These results suggest that it is difficult to prepare solutions with equal viscosity using different materials, because the materials or diluent for therapeutic diets are different in each hospital. It is expected that the viscosity index will help to raise healthcare professionals’ awareness about the importance of material quantitation and that it will become one of the tools used in nutrition education, dietary intervention, and interprofessional collaboration in healthcare.

We investigated the actual condition of patients treated by acupuncture and moxibution in Ibaragi Prefecture.
Subjects were 1823 patients (846 men, 977 women) under the treatment of 14 acupuncture clinics in September to November, 1985.
We prepared the evaluated list that consisted of 11 levels of activities of daily life and 8 degrees of pain.
In every treatment, we wrote down the patient's clinical progress in relation with the list.
The following results were obtained
1. There were many patients in thier forties and fifties.
2. There were many patients who received only one treatment.
3. The chief complaints were low back pains (509 patients), shoulder discomfort (273) knee joint pain (132), etc.
4. Most of the patients could still go on with thier daily lives in spite of the pains.
5. The effects of treatment were rated as follows; better 69.5%, no change 23.9%, worse 5.9%.
