Objective To determine the definite effec ti ve therapy for localized prostate cancer. Methods A data -base of 317 patients with prostate cancer treated with different therapies be tween 1969 and 1999 were analyzed.Overall survival and disease specific survival rates for patients with different stage,grade,and regimen were analysed by Kap lan-Meier method.Predictive factors impacted on disease specific survival were also analyzed by using log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards model. Results Overall survival rates at 5-,10- and 15-year were 7 3.1%,51.8% and 35.3%,corresponding disease specific survival rats of 85.1%、72.9 % and 72.9%,respectively.Disease specific survival rate at 10-year was 100.0% i n 36 patients treated with radical prostatectomy,78.0% in 57 patients treated wi th local radiotherapy.Multivariate analysis by Cox model showed that stage ( RR =2.17,CI 1.43～3.28, P =0.0000) and grade( RR =2.54,CI 1.37～4.68, P = 0. 0003)were significantly impacted on disease specific survival. Conc lusions Radical prostatectomy and local radiation provide effective treatment for patient with organ-confined prostate cancer.Adjuvant hormonal the rapy may effect on patient’s survival.Clinical stage and grade of prostate canc er are independent factors impacting on survival significantly.

BACKGROUND:Titanium implants as a safe biological material have been used to produce the artificial Russian titanium cornea, but complications stil exist, including artificial cornea shift, leakage, corneal tissue melting and artificial cornea discharge.
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate in vivo biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite modified titanium skirt for keratoprosthesis in alkali burn cornea.
METHODS:A total of 30 alkali burned New Zealand white rabbit corneas were divided into three group groups. Hydroxyapatite modified titanium skirt (experimental group) and titanium skirt (control group) were respectively inserted into the corneal stroma of rabbits. In the blank control group, only a lamel ar corneal incision was made.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Al skirts were stable without necrosis, melting and exclusion during the observation period. The number of inflammatory cells in the experimental and control groups was significantly higher than that in the blank control group at 2 and 8 weeks postoperatively (P<0.05), but there was no difference in inflammatory cellinfiltration among different groups by the 16th week. The number of corneal fibroblasts increased significantly in the experimental group compared with the control and blank control group after 2, 8, 16 weeks (P<0.05). The extracellular matrix deposited on the surface of hydroxyapatite modified titanium skirt was denser and tighter than that on the surface of titanium skirt. It indicates that hydroxyapatite modified titanium skirt for keratoprosthesis can promote the interfacial biointegration of skirt and host cornea.

BackgroundHigh myopia is one of leading causes of blindness,so far the pathogenesis remains unclear.Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of rs6885224 and rs12716080 in CTNND2 gene were recently found to be associated with high myopia in Singaporean Chinese.But whether these SNPs are related with the pathogenesis of high myopia in Han Chinese is worth studying,Objective This study was to investigate the relationship between the genetic variations of the CTNND2 gene and high myopia in Han Chinese.MethodsA case-controlled association study was designed.Nine hundred and thirty-three individuals with high myopia and 1227age- and gender-matched normal subjects were included in this study.The 5 ml of periphery blood was obtained from all subjects for the extraction of genomic DNA.The target DNA was amplified using PCR and purified by the SNaPshot method.Four SNPs rs12716080,rs917012,rs6885224 and rs16901340 in the CTNND2 gene were genotyped.This study was approved by the Ethic Committee of Sichuan Provincial People Hospital.Written informed consent was obtained from each subject before his/her enrollment.Results The frequencies of the genotypes rs6885224,rs12716080,rs917012,rs16901340 SNPs were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) ( P=0.181,0.085,0.732,0.313,0.264,0.663,0.084,0.196).There were no significant differences in genotypes frequency distribution ( in turn P =0.654,0.406,0.828,0.403 ) and allele frequency distribution of the CTNND2 gene ( in turn P =0.377,0.209,0.743,0.198) between the high myopia group and normal control group.The haplotypes (TA and GA)frequencies of rs12716080 and rs917012 in the high myopia group were significantly different from those of the normal control group(TA:0.784 vs.0.719;GA:0.087 vs.0.136) (x2 =6.115,P=0.013 ;x2 =6.634,P=0.010),but those of GG were similar between the high myopia group and normal control group ( 0.123 vs.0.143,x2 =0.889,P =0.346). ConclusionsThe SNPs rs12716080,rs917012,rs6885224 and rs16901340 in CTNND2 gene were not responsible for high myopia,however,the haplotypes of rs12716080 and rs917012 are susceptible for high myopia in Han Chinese.

Objective To evaluate the effect of peer educatio n program by the application of the peer education on human immunodeficiency vir us/aeguired immune deficiency syndrome(HIV/AIDS) prevention and the analysis of the change on knowledge, attitude and behavior about HIV/AIDS among technical sc hool students in Shanghai. Methods Three technical schools in Shanghai were selected randomly. Two classes of each school were selected randomly as education group and the students added up to 284.Two hundred and sixty-one students of another 2 classes in each school were selected as the interior control group. Some freshmen came from medical un iversity were carefully trained as peer educators to conduct the education inclu ding 6 models. The same questionnaires were carried before and after the educati on in both groups. Results After peer education the score of average knowledge abo ut reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, STD was significantly higher than before (P 0.05). Conclusions The conduction of the peer education on HIV/AIDS pr evention among technical school students is effective in promoting the knowledge level,but the change of attitude and behavior is a long term. So we highly adv ocate that not only the health education for HIV/AIDS especially safe sex shall be given and strengthened among technical school students in order to promote t he notion of self-protection but also the conception of care others especially t he HIV/AIDS. Objective To explore the effects of combining tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-αt) inhibitor with adenosine A2b receptor antagonist CVT-6883 on asthmatic lung irflammation in mice.Methods A total of 40 female Balb/c mice were evenly randomized into 5 groups,including normal control group,asthma group,CVT-6883 group,CVT-6883 + etanercept group,and etanercept group.The pathological changes in the lungs were determined and the number of white blood cells(WBC) and eosinophil(EOS) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) was counted by cell count in each group.The levels of TNF-α in BALF were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).The expression of adenosine A2b receptor mRNA in the lung tissues were measured by reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Results 1.The lung tissue in asthma group,dyed by HE,was found to have a large number of airway inflammatory cell infiltration,thickening of the bronchial mucosa,the alveolar septa widened and fracture.In the CVT-6883,CVT-6883 + etanercept and etanercept group,the pathological changes were relieved.2.The WBC and EOS counts in BALF of the asthma group[(413.8 ±5.8)/L,(139.3 ± 1.4)/L] were higher than those of the normal control group [(24.0 ± 1.3)/L,(1.8 ± 0.1)/L,P ＜ 0.05].The WBC and EOS counts of the CVT-6883 group[(111.5 ±3.8)/L,(3.3 ±0.1)/L],the etanercept group + the CVT-6883 group[(173.8 ±3.9)/L,(10.4 ± 0.2)/L],and the etanercept group[(138.4 ± 3.0)/L,(4.1 ± 0.1)/L] were lower than those of the asthma group (P ＜0.05).3.Compared with the control group(100.4 ± 5.7) ng/L,the TNF-α concentration of the asthma group (145.2 ± 8.8) ng/L was significantly higher (P ＜ 0.05) ; the TNF-α concentration of CVT-6883 group (130.9 ± 5.9) ng/L,CVT-6883 + etanercept group(115.7 ± 8.2) ng/L and the etanercept group(122.0 ± 8.7) ng/L,were significantly decreased compared with asthma group (P ＜ 0.05).4.In asthma group (8.9 ± 1.1) compared with the control group(0.6 ± 0.2),the A2bAR (adenosine A2b receptor) mRNA expression was upregulated (P ＜ 0.05) ; CVT-6883 group(1.6 ±0,3),CVT-6883 + etanercept group(2.5 ±0.6) and the etanercept group(5.3 ±0.4),the A2bAR(adenosine A2b receptor) mRNA expression was significantly decreased compared with asthma group (all P ＜0,05).Conclusion Combination of TNF-α inhibitor with adenosine A2b receptor antagonist can reduce asthmatic lung inflammation.
