AIM: To evaluate posterior capsular opacification (PCO) with hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL, Sensar AR40e) and silicone IOLs after cataract surgery, to use a software program developed to provide an objective assessment of the amount of PCO in the digital images of the posterior capsule to quantify PCO. METHODS: Ninety-eight eyes underwent standardized phacoemulsification and "in the bag" IOL placement, were randomized to receive a three piece lens of hydrophobic acrylic or silicone, but lens materials were different in one case. In year 1 and 2, digitized retro-illumination images were taken from the posterior capsule. Images were analyzed by POCO software program, removing the Purkinje light reflexes, contrast enhancement, filtering to enhance low-density PCO. RESULTS: The percentage of PCO were 0.32±0.13 of hydrophobic acrylic IOLs in year 1, compared with 0.39±0.17 of silicone (P=0.37). In year 2, the percentage of PCO were 0.42±0.20 with hydrophobic acrylic IOLs and 0.34±0.18 with silicone IOLs (P=0.50). Of those patients with PCO in year 1 and 2, severity grades were 0.50±0.30 and 0.82±0.58 of hydrophobic acrylic cases, compared with 0.63±0.35 and 0.55±0.35 of patients with silicone IOLs (P=0.52,P=0.69) with no statistical significance.CONCLUSION: The POCO system is capable of producing an objective and repeatable measure of PCO that is relevant to assessing techniques of PCO prevention.

In this study, the relationship between mycelium morphology and laccase production was studied. The results indicated that the morphology of P. ferulae pellets was changed when glass beads were added. Laccase production showed higher with spherical mycelium than with filamentous or flocculent mycelium. In addition, the spherical mycelium with a diameter of 0.2-0.4 mm highly affected laccase production. Effect of the composition of culture medium on pellets was investigated and results indicated that various concentrations of glucose, corn meal and wheat bran were important to the formation of pellets in diameter of 0.2-0.4 mm. Besides nutrients, the addition of non-nutritional substrates influenced the distribution of P. ferulae pellets. However, the production of laccase was not promoted by non-nutritional substrates.

Objective To investigate the proportion , risk factors and tendency of change of stone composition in recurrent urolithiasis .Methods Eighty-five recurrent urolithiasis patients from 2002 to 2014 were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study .There were 61 male and 24 female patients with a median age of 51 (21-89) years at initial events.Among those patients, 70 had two events, 12 had three events, and 3 had more than 3 events.Compositions of initial and recurrent stones were measured by infrared spectrophotometry.Stone type, recurrence interval and recurrence frequency were studied as potential risk factors for composition change . Chi square test and logistic regression analysis were employed in the statistical analysis. Results Stone composition changed during recurrence in 26 patients ( 30.6%) . Univariate analysis showed the risk ratio of composition change in the patients with recurrence interval of 1-5 years was 0.518 (95%CI, 0.277-0.967, P<0.05) when compared with those of less than 1 year or more than 5 years.Logistic regression analysis showed the odds ratio of recurrence interval of 1-5 years was 0.231 (95%CI, 0.075-0.707, P=0.010).The mutual conversion between calcium oxalate and infection stones was mostly observed when stone composition changed during recurrence .Twenty percent of calcium oxalate stones changed to infection stones and 29.2% of infection stones changed to calcium oxalate .
Conclusions Stone composition changes in about one third patients of recurrent urolithiasis .The mutual conversion between calcium oxalate and infection stones is the most common change .Recurrence interval is an independent risk factor to predict composition change .Repeated stone analysis should be suggested to patients with recurrent interval of less than 1 year or more than 5 years.
