Objective To observe the changes of blood sugar following use of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) in patients with severe burn. Methods A total of 140 patients with severe burn but with no history of diabetes were randomly and equally divided into Group A ( 18-44 years old) and Group B ( ≥45 years old) according to WHO criteria. Then, two groups were randomly divided Group B0 (treated with normal saline), 35 patients per group. Change of blood sugar and amount of insuline for control of blood sugar were observed and analyzed. Results Of 140 patients in four groups,128 patients accomplished the test, with no statistical difference upon general conditions between groups (P ＞0.05 ). Within four weeks after test, the amount of insuline used for control of blood sugar was (2908.0 ± 153.5) IU and (724.1 ± 31.1 ) IU respectively in Groups A1 and A0, (3725.9 ± 88.4) IU and (801.8 ±22.2) IU respectively in Groups B1 and BO. The results showed that the patients needing insulin to control blood sugar in Group B were more than that in Group A ( P ＜ 0.01 ). The time for blood sugar recovering to normal range in patients with high blood sugar with no use of rhGH in Group A1 and Group B1 was (5.21 ±0.64) d and (5.03 ± 1.01) d respectively (P＞0.05). Conclusions The blood sugar of patients with severe burn will rise after use of rhGH. The age of the patients is positively correlated with changes of blood sugar. Standard use of rhGH does not induce diabetes.

ObjectiveTo analysis the clinical characteristics and the high risk factors of children with cerebral palsy.MethodsClinical data of 100 children with cerebral palsy were retrospectively analyzed.Results51% of children were born with asphyxia, 42% were born prematurely, 39% were low birth body weight. 85.7% of children involved had mental retardation, 12% had hearing loss and 7% had visual impairment. 88% of children involved had abnormal cranial CT results and 46.1% had abnormal EEG. 50.0% of the children had abnormal brain stem auditory evoked potentials.ConclusionAsphyxia, prematurely birth and low birth body weight are high risk factors of cerebral palsy. Most of the children with cerebral palsy in this group are mental retarded.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of Shen warming Pi strengthening method on expressions of serum T cell subsets (C045+%, C03+%, and C04 +/COB+) in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-0) rats. Methods An IBS-0 rat model was established referring to AL-Chaer's modeling method combined with tail clamp and intragastric administration of sanna leaf. After modeling 30 SO rats were randomly divided into 6 groups according to random digit table, i.e., the model group, the high, middle, low dose Wenshen Jianpi Recipe (WJR) groups, and the Sishen Pill control group, 6 in each group. A normal control group consisting of 6 SO rats were also set up. Rats in high, middle, low dose WJ R groups were administered by gastrogavage with boil-free WJ R at the daily dose of 3. 100, 1. 550, 0. 775 g/kg, respectively. Rats in the Sis hen Pill control group were administered by gastrogavage with boil-free Sis hen Pill at the daily dose of 0. 736 g/kg. Equal volume of normal saline was given by gastrogavage to rats in the model group and the normal control group. All medication lasted for 2 successive weeks. Rats' general state, expressions of T cell subsets (CD45+%, CD3+%, and CD4+ /CDB+) changes were observed.

RESULTSCompared with the normal control group, expressions of CD45+% and CD3+% increased, but CD4+ /CDB+ decreased with statistical difference (P < 0. 05). Compared with the model group, expressions of CD45+% and CD3+% decreased, but CD4+ ICDB+ increased with statistical difference in high, middle, low dose WJR groups, and the Sis hen Pill control group (P <0. 05). Compared with the Sis hen Pill control group, there was statistical difference in all indices except CD45+ value in the low dose SWPSM group (P <0. 05). Compared with the low dose WJ R group, the expression of CD3+% decreased in high and middle dose WJR groups, and the Sis hen Pill control group; CD4+ /CD8+ increased in the Sishen Pill control group and the high dose SWPSM group (all P < 0. 05).

CONCLUSIONSWJR showed better treatment effect. The mechanism of Shen warming Pi strengthening method might be achieved by regulating expressions of CD45+% and CD3+%, and CD4+ /CD8+ ratios.

Chronic viral hepatitis B (CHB) is a major infectious disease greatly harmful to the health of Chinese people. Chinese medicine has its speciality and advantages in treating it depending syndrome-differentiation. The objectified researches regarding Chinese medical syndromes in CHB heretofore were reviewed in this article. Moreover, aiming at existing problems and taking the angle of "disease-syndrome combining" study, authors put forward research approach, and approaches for studying systemic biology based biological basis of Chinese medical syndrome in hepatitis B with reductionism and holism, cybernetics and system theories in combination.

Objective To investigate radiological features of patients with heroin spongiform leukoencephalopathy(HSLE)of different clinical stages and discuss the evolutional characteristics of the disease.Methods Thirty two patients with HSLE underwent precontrast MRI and postcontrast MRI.The history of addiction,clinical presentations,and brain MRI were analyzed and summarized according to the patient's clinical staging.There are 6 cases in Ⅰ stage,21 cases in Ⅱ stage,5 cases in Ⅲ stage.Results All patients had history of heroin vapor inhalation.Most of the cases developed subacute cerebellar impairment in earlier period.Brain MRI revealed symmetrical lesion within bilateral cerebellum in all patients.Splenium of the corpus callosum,posterior limb of the internal capsule,deep white matter of the occipital and parietal lobes,were gradually involved with progressive deterioration of HSLE.The brain stem and deep white matter of the frontal and temporal lobes were involved in some cases.Conclusions The history of heated heroin vapor inhalation was the prerequisite for the diagnosis of HSLE.Brain MRI presented the characteristic lesion and its evolution of HSLE.Brain MRI was very important for accurate diagnosis and helpful to judge the clinical stages according to the involved brain region.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of astragalus (As) on calcium accumulation and SERCA2a gene expression in left ventricular tissues in rats with pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy.

METHODcardiac hypertrophy was induced by clipping the abdominal aorta in rats. Male SD rats were allocated to six groups: sham-operrated (Sham), aortic stenosis (Model), model +As-L (5 g x kg(-1) x d(-1)), model+As-M (10 g x kg(-1) x d(-1)), model+As-H (20 g x kg(-1) x d(-1)) and model + captopril (0.05 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1), a positive control). The drugs were administered orally from the 13 th week after surgery. Rats were examined after 12 week treatment with drugs. The cardiac hypertrophy was evaluated by left ventricular mass index (LVMI, left ventricular weight/ body weight). The calcium content in left ventricular tissue was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. SERCA2a mRNA and protein expressions in left ventricular tissues were determined by half-quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot normalized to abundance of GAPDH mRNA and protein, respectively.

RESULTThe increase of LVMI was dose-dependently lessened by As (P < 0.01, P < 0.001). The effect of As-H was similar to that of Captopril. As markedly attenuated calcium accumulation in myocardial tissure (P < 0.01). RT-PCR and Western blot results demonstrated that SERCA2a gene expressions were downregulated (P < 0.05) significantly in model group compared with sham group. As-H upregulated SERCA2a gene expressions (P < 0.05), whereas Captopril had no effect on that.

CONCLUSIONThe inhibition of As on left ventricular hypertrophy induced by pressure overload in rats may partly contribute to its attenuation of calcium accumulation and up-regulation of SERCA2a gene expressions in left ventricular tissues.

OBJECTIVEIBS-D rat model was established to assess the effect of Shen warming Pi strengthening method (SWPSM) for intervening diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) by observing rats' general state, stool properties, AWR ranking, and histopathological changes.

METHODSTotally 72 rats were randomly divided into 6 groups, i.e. the normal group, the model group, the high, middle, low dose SWPSM groups, and the control group, 12 in each group. The IBS-D rat model was successfully established referring to AL-Chaer ED's modeling method. After modeling high, middle, and low dose SWPS Recipe boil-free granules were given by gastrogavage to rats in corresponding treatment groups. Sishen Pill boil-free granule was given by gastrogavage to those in the control group. Equal volume of normal saline was given by gastrogavage to rats in the model group. The medication lasted for 2 weeks. Rats' general state, stool properties, abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) ranking, and histopathological changes were observed.

RESULTSAfter treatment, the general state of all rats got im- provement to various degrees. The improvement in the high and middle dose SWPS Recipe groups were superior to that in the low dose SWPS Recipe group and the control group (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the growth rate between after and before treatment in each group (P > 0.05). Compared with the model group and the low dose SWPS Recipe group, the defecation amount within 4 h was less in the high and middle dose SWPS Recipe groups and the control group (P < 0.05). The Bristol ranking score, average ranking of loose stool, ratio of dry stool and wet stool were lower in the high and middle dose SWPS Recipe groups than in the control group and the low dose SWPS Recipe group (P < 0.05). The AWR ranking score was lower in the high and middle dose SWPS Recipe groups than in the control group when the volume of balloon dilation was 1.5 mL. There was no organic change of histological or morphological observation.

CONCLUSIONSHigh sensitive IBS-D model was proved to be reliable. SWPSM could reduce the quantity of stools, lower Bristol ranking score, average ranking of loose stools as well as ratios of dry stool and wet stool, contributing to reducing the high sensitivity of rats' visceral organs to some extent.

The pathogenesis of steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) is not very clear at present. For the past few years researches showed that the SONFH related to genetic predisposing factors. The related research progresses were reviewed in this article to show the correlation between genetic mutation and genetic polymorphism of steroid metabolism and transport, resistance and receptor, coagulation and fibrinolysis, lipid and bone metabolism and susceptibility to SONFH. The article also discussed current problems, countermeasure and future applications.

Objective To investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the SCGB3A2(secretoglobin family 3A member 2) gene promoter with susceptibility of Graves' disease.Methods One-hundred and seventy-nine SNPs within a 3.0 Mb region surrounding marker D5s2090 were scanned in a case-control study.The size of the region(s) associated with GD was then narrowed.Results Total 179 SNPs within a 3.0 Mb region surrounding marker D5s2090 were analyzed.The most significant association signal was found at SNP rs1368408 (P =3.69 × 10-5).Subsequent association analysis was then performed and the results suggested that the SNP76 (P =4.11 × 10-8) and SNP75 (P =1.37 × 10-8) in the promoter of SCGB3A2 gene may be the causal variants of GD.Logistic regression analysis suggested these 2 SNPs in this region may contribute to GD susceptibility.Conclusion A significant association seems to exist between GD with the SCGB3A2 gene.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the features and diagnosis way of small round cell tumor of nasal sinus and bases of skull. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of 123 case with small round cell tumor of nasal sinus and bases of skull were carried out in our hospital in past ten year. Clinical, histological, radiological and immunohistochemical characters of these cases were studied. RESULT: All cases usually complained of nasal obstruction, headache, diplopia, nasal mucus with bleeding, vision or weight loss. Expansible or infiltrative lumps were found in nasal sinus or bases of skull in radiological examination. A lot of small round cells were found in these tumors in histological pathology. At least 5-6 cell, tissue or tumor markers were examined immunohistochemically in most of cases before the final diagnosis were made. In some cases over 20 markers were examined. Five cases were carried out transmission electron microscope examination, special features such as desmosome and myofilament were found. CONCLUSION Clinical symptom, physical signs and radiological finding can supply malignant evidences of these tumors. Histological examination can make certain that they are small round cell tumors, but final diagnosis is still hard to make only by these. Immunohistochemical examination of various markers can tell the original characters of the specimen tissues, it is the key for final diagnosis. Transmission electron microscope examination is another helpful way for diagnosis.
