Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of ginger-partitioned moxibustion in treating myelo- suppression induced by chemotherapy for multiple myeloma (MM), and to discuss the effect of ginger-partitioned moxibustion in preventing and treating the adverse reactions of chemotherapy.Method Forty-four MM patients with myelosuppression induced by chemotherapy were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 22 cases each. The treatment group was intervened by ginger-partitioned moxibustion, while the control group was intervened by oral administration of Leukogen tablets, both for 14 d. The white blood cell (WBC) count was observed before the treatment, on treatment day 7 and 14, and 1 week after the intervention; the incidence of nausea and vomit and clinical efficacies were compared between the two groups.Result The total effective rate was 81.8% in the treatment group versus 63.6% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The WBC count on the 7th treatment day was significantly different from that before the treatment in both groups (P<0.05); the WBC count in the treatment group was significantly different from that in the control group on the 7th treatment day (P<0.05). The WBC count on the 14th treatment day was significantly different from that on the 7th day in both groups(P<0.05); the WBC count in the treatment group was significantly different from that in the control group on the 14th treatment day (P<0.05). The WBC count 1 week after the treatment was insignificantly different from that on the 14th treatment day in both groups (P>0.05); there was no significant difference in comparing the WBC count 1 week after the treatment between the two groups (P>0.05). The incidence of nausea and vomit in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group after the treatment (P<0.05).Conclusion Ginger-partitioned moxi- bustion can effectively treat myelosuppression due to chemotherapy for MM, and it can significantly increase the WBC count.

OBJECTIVETo study the genetic characteristics of measles viruses circulating in Zhejiang province in 2005.
METHODS4 groups of measles viruses isolated in outbreaks and the H and N gene were amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). PCR products were purified, sequenced and data was analyzed.
RESULTSAll of the 4 measles isolates belonged to genotype H1 which had been a main genotype containing all of the isolates in China. The isolates shared 99.2% -99.7% identity of amino acid sequence on H and 99.8% identity of amino acid sequence on N gene. When comparing to the China vaccine strain (Shanghai 191), there were 95.2%-95.5% homogeneties and 95.5% homogeneties on H and N gene respectively.
CONCLUSIONData from phylogenic trees of H and N gene revealed that the wide-type measles viruses circulating in Zhejiang province in 2005 all belonged to genotype H1. There were obvious differences on genetic characteristics between the isolates and the genotype A (Shanghai 191).

Chinese Medical Journal 2010;123(12):1553-1556
BACKGROUNDOxidative stress and inflammation are important steps in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We postulated that therapeutic concentrations of aspirin and pravastatin, especially in combination, may suppress oxidative stress and inflammation in endothelial cells, and this concept was examined in human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs).
METHODSHuman coronary artery endothelial cells were cultured and treated with oxidized-low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL, 60 microg/ml for 24 hours) alone, or pre-treated with aspirin (1, 2 or 5 mmol/L), pravastatin (1, 5 or 10 micromol/L) or their combination (1 mmol/L aspirin and 5 micromol/L pravastatin), followed by ox-LDL treatment. After respective treatment, superoxide anion production, p38 mitogen activated protein kinase and transcription factor NF-kappaB activation, protein expression of lectin-like ox-LDL receptor-1 (LOX-1) and adhesion molecules, and monocyte adhesion were measured.
RESULTSOx-LDL treatment greatly elicited its receptor LOX-1 expression, superoxide anion production and inflammatory response, which were minimally affected by low concentration of aspirin (1 mmol/L) or pravastatin (5 micromol/L), but were markedly decreased by their combination. Activation of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase and NF-kappaB, the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1, which were only mildly affected by aspirin or pravastatin alone, were significantly attenuated by their combination. As a consequence, monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells was markedly attenuated by the combination of the two agents. Well-known anti-oxidants alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol had similar inhibitory effects on ox-LDL-mediated oxidative stress and LOX-1 expression as well as monocyte adhesion as did the combination of aspirin and pravastatin.
CONCLUSIONSThese studies point to a positive interaction between aspirin and pravastatin with regard to endothelial biology. Anti-oxidant and subsequent anti-inflammatory effect may be one of the potential underling mechanisms.

OBJECTIVEThis study was designed to investigate the effects of different oxygen inhalation modes on retinal vessels development in neonatal mice in order to provide experimental data for proper oxygen therapy for premature infants.
METHODSA total of 144 postnatal day (P) 7 C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned into 6 groups according to different oxygen inhalation modes (n=24). Experimental group 1 was exposed to 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 75% oxygen in turn for one day respectively, followed by room air exposure for 5 days. Experimental group 2 was exposed to 75%, 60%, 50%, 40% and 30% oxygen in turn for one day respectively, followed by room air exposure for 5 days. Experimental group 3 was exposed to 75% oxygen for 5 days, followed by room air exposure for 5 days. Experimental group 4 was exposed to 75% oxygen for 5 days, 50% oxygen for 2 days and 30% oxygen for 2 days, then room air exposure for 6 days. The supplemental 75% oxygen and room air recovering was performed alternately for the mice in Experimental group 5 for 3 times and then room air exposure for 5 days. The Control group was exposed to room air for consecutive 10 days. The retinal vascular development and proliferation were evaluated by the retinal flat-mounts (ADPase stained retina) and cross-section.
RESULTSThe peripheral vascular pattern was clear, and a few avascular areas were seen in the Control group at P12. At P14 the avascular area disappeared. At P17, the entire vascular pattern became completely normal. In the Experimental groups 1, 3 and 5, the central vessels became tortuous and constricted and the central avascular area increased at P12. At P14, neovascularization was seen peaking at P17 in the Experimental groups 1, 3 and 5. In the Experimental group 4, the central avascular area increased and neovascularization was seen at P14, but the central avascular area was reduced and abnormal neovascularization disappeared, with slight constriction of the deep vessels, at P17. Five days later the vascular pattern became almost normal in the Experimental group 4. The retinal vascular form of the Experimental group 2 was similar to that of the Control group. The average number of neovascular nuclei extending into the vitreous per cross-section in the Experimental groups 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 and the Control group was 49.50 +/- 1.36, 5.17 +/- 0.67, 47.68 +/- 4.70, 5.74 +/- 2.37, 29.15 +/- 2.48, and 1.22 +/- 0.20 respectively. There were significant differences between the Experimental groups 1, 3, 5 and the Control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe effects of different oxygen inhalation modes on the retinal vessels development in neonatal mice were different. The obvious fluctuation of inhaled oxygen concentration and abrupt stop of supplemental oxygen after high levels of supplemental oxygen may severely affect the development of retina vascular, leading to the pathologic changes similar to retinopathy of prematurity.

Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the elderly often reveals white matter changes (WMCs) with substantial variability across individuals. Our study was designed to explore MRI features and site-specific factors of ischemic WMCs.Clinical data of consecutive patients diagnosed with ischemic cerebral vascular disease who had undergone brain MRI were collected and analyzed.Multi-logistic regression analysis comparing patients with mild versus severe WMCs was performed to detect independent associations.Analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to detect regionally specific differences in lesions. We found that lesion distribution differed significantly across five cerebral areas, with lesions being predominant in the frontal lobe and parieto-occipital area.To explore WMCs risk factors, after adjusting for gender, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension, only age (P<0.01),creatinine (P=0.01),alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (P=0.01) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (P=0.03) were found to be independently associated with severe WMCs.Age (P<0.001) was strongly associated with WMCs in the frontal lobe while hypertension was independently related to lesions in the basal ganglia (P=0.048) or infratentorial area (P=0.016).In conclusion,MRI of WMCs showed that ischemic WMCs occurred mostly in the frontal lobe and parieto-occipital area. The infratentorial area was least affected by WMCs.Typically,age-related WMCs were observed in the frontal lobes, while hypertension-related WMCs tended to occur in the basal ganglia and infratentorial area.
