3.Association of collagen type I alpha1 Sp1 polymorphism with bone mineral density and fracture:a Meta-analysis of case-control studies

BACKGROUND:Currently, there are large numbers of studies related to the association between colagen type I alpha1 (COL1A1) Sp1 polymorphism and bone mineral density and fracture risk, but the results are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the impact of the COL1A1 Sp1 polymorphism on bone mineral density and fracture by using the Meta-analysis. METHODS:We comprehensively searched the eligible studies for the present meta-analysis through MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE databases. Pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of Sp1 polymorphisms for bone mineral density and fracture risk were obtained, with attention to study quality and publication bias. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:A total of 32 studies met the inclusion criteria, among which, 22 studies evaluated the Sp1 polymorphism and fracture risk. Significant associations were found in five genetic models. In the stratified analysis by region, the same results were found in the Europeans but not Americans and Asians. Thirteen studies evaluated the Sp1 polymorphism and low bone mineral density risk. A similar result was obtained. However, the analysis of bone mineral density data showed an increased relation between Sp1 polymorphism and low bone mineral density in Europeans and Americans but not in Asians. Overal, the current meta-analysis concludes that the COL1A1 Sp1 polymorphism is associated with low bone mineral density and fracture risk, especialy in Europeans. However, susceptibility to them varies markedly among populations from different regions.
4.Reduction of intimal thickening by inhibition of early rat medial smooth muscle cell proliferation induced by arterial injury

AIM: To investigate the relationship between medial smooth muscle cell proliferation and intimal thickening.METHODS: Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (temocapril-HCl, 10 mg?kg -1 ?d -1 ) was administered in various periods after rat arterial injury by balloon catheters. The labeling BrdU indexes of smooth muscle cell and intimal areas were observed. RESULTS: Positive medial smooth muscle cells for BrdU occurred at 24 hours after injury. The labeling indexes for BrdU showed biphasic change, the period of the first peak appeared within day 1-3, the peak value was 5 3% at 2 days. The period of the second peak appeared within day 3-7, the peak was 2 7% at 5 days. Administration of temocapril in the first proliferation phase significantly suppressed the labeling BrdU index(0 05?0 02)% vs (4 50?0 27)%, P0 05 ). CONCLUSION: The first proliferative phase of arterial medial smooth muscle cell after balloon injury is necessary to the intimal formation.
5.Etiological study of hand,foot and mouth disease among children in Shanghai and neighbor areAfls in 2008

Objective To investigate the distribution and genetic characteristic of etiological agents among children with hand,foot and mouth disease(HFMD)in Shanghai and neighbor areas in 2008.Methods Throat swabs were collected from the inpatients with HFMD from May to June 2008 in Pediatrics Hospital affiliated to Fudan University,Shanghai,and Deqing,Zhejiang Province.Cerebral spinal fluid(CSF)from some patients were collected as well.Vero,MRC-5 and RD ceils were used to isolate the possible pathogens by observing cytopathic effect(CPE).Enterovirus genus,Coxsaekie virus group A type 16(CoxA16)and enterovirus type 71(EV71)were detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR),and finally identified by sequencing.Results A total of 107 swabs and 22 CSF samples were collected from all 100 inpatients.Swabs of 50 children caused CPE observed.Among them,enteroviruses accounted for 74.0%(37/50),which including 26 (52.0%)of EV71,10(20%)of CoxAl6 and 1(2.0%)of CoxB3,and 13(26.0%)of other pathogens.All the 26 EV71 strains were similar with the isolates from Zhejiang Province and Fuyang,Anhui Province in 2008,which belonged tO genotype Cl all the 10 CoxAl6 strains belonged to genetic lineages C.Conclusions The causative agents of HFMD are complicated.CoxA16 and EV71 are predominant among children with HFMD in Shanghai and neighbor areas in 2008,while the pathogens of some patients are still unknown.
6.Tension reduced incision through anterior tibial approach combined with locking compression plate fixation for treatment of elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures.

OBJECTIVETo explore effective approaches of treating elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures.
METHODSFrom August 2008 to October 2012,175 elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures were treated with locking compression plate (LCP) through anterior tibial. There were 112 males and 63 females with an average of 71.3 (ranged 60 to 83) years old. Of them,89 cases were treated by anterior tibial tension reduced incision with LCP,including 62 males and 27 females with a mean age of (71.8 +/- 6.4) years old. Eighty-six patients were treated by distal tibial incision with LCP,including 58 males and 28 females with a mean age of (70.3 +/- 6.7) years old. Swelling time, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, healing time, complications and AOFAS scores were compared between two groups after operation.
RESULTSSwelling time in anterior tension reduced incision with LCP and distal tibial incision with LCP was (5.6 +/- 1.3) and (9.7 +/- 2.1) days, healing time was (4.2 +/- 1.4) and (5.4 +/- 1.9) months,and complications were found 3 in tension reduced incision and 10 in distak tibial incision respectively;and all data shown statistically significant differences between two groups (P < 0.05). At 12 months after operation,AOFAS score was 89.0 +/- 9.7, 87.9 +/- 9.4; and there was no statistically significant difference between two groups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONTension reduced incision through anterior tibial combined with locking compression plate fixation in treating elderly patients with distal tibiofibular fractures can provide good clinical effects with quick fracture healing and low complications.

8.Identification of abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic parameters in healthcare check-up populations during two years' follow-up

Objective To investigate the detection rate of abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic indicators in health check-up populations,and provide evidence for early screening and health interventions for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.Methods A total of 5578 adults (male 3404 and female 2174) were recruited from a medical institution in Beijing in 2008 and 2010.Cardiovascular and metabolic indicators,including blood pressure,lipid profile and fasting plasma glucose,were tested at baseline and 2 years.Paired t test or paired rank sum test was used for data analysis.Results Detection rate of abnormal blood pressure in 2010 was lower than that in 2008; however,rates of abnormal total cholesterol,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and fasting plasma glucose were higher in 2010 than in 2008 (t values were 5.378,13.885,3.210,10.401 and 4.355,respectively; all P < 0.05).High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride showed no statistically significant difference between 2008 and 2010 (t values were 1.204 and -0.012,respectively; both P > 0.05).Conclusion We have been observing a dynamic change in abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic indicators,based on which effective interventions could be taken to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
