AIM: To observe the effects of some component of Chinese herbs for external use on proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and investigate the mechanism of promoting tissue repair. METHODS: The method of MTT was used to examine the effects of Rg1, Rh1, perlolyrine, cinnamyl aldehyde, muscone, astragalus polysaccharin (APS), velver antler polypeptide (VAP) and soluble extract of boswellia carterii birdw (BCB) on proliferation of HUVEC. RESULTS: APS did not promote proliferation of HUVEC at 9.75 mg/L-2.5 g/L; Rh1 promoted proliferation of HUVEC at 1.94 mg/L-0.5 g/L (P

Objective To study the effects of localized thermochemotherapy on cellular proliferation and the expression of PCNA and IGF-I protein of C6 gliomas in rat, and explore the possibility of developing new therapeutic method of gliomas. Methods C6 glioma cells were injectcd subcutaneously to rats. The rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups, and treatment were initiated on day 22 after tumor inoculation. Prior to treatment, the subcutaneous gliomas were examined to verify tumor size, which were ranged 1.5 to 2.0 cm. Then localized thermochemotherapy, hyperthermia and chemotherapy were given, respectively. The size and weight of subcutaneous tumors were measured. PCNA and IGF-I protein expression were detected by the technique of S-P immunohistochemistry. Glioma cells proliferation was detected by HE staining method and electron-microscopic observation. Results Compared with the control group, the tumor size of rats in the hyperthermia and chemotherapy as well as thermochemotherapy groups was decreased, the tumor weight was also decreased significantly (2.95g vs 1.95g vs 1.86g vs 1.09g, P

AIM:To compare the effects of alcohol and aqueous extracts from Huiyang shengji gao(HYSJG),a Chinese medicine,on proliferation of human fibroblasts derived from normal and ulcer margin skin.METHODS:Using explant culture techniques,we obtained populations of normal human fibroblast(nHFB)and ulcer marginal fibroblast(uHFB).Alarmar blue assay was used for observing cell proliferation, and flow cytometry for cell cycle analysis.RESULTS:After cultured with aqueous extracts and alcohol extracts of HYSJG for 24 hours, the proliferation rates of the two cell lines were both elevated. For alcohol extract, obvious proliferation-promoting concentrations on nHFB and uHFB were 0.027-0.425 mg/L and 0.027-0.213 mg/L,respectively(P

BACKGROUND:The gut microbiota in our intestine performs numerous useful functions and has a major impact on the host’s health. Recently some studies have revealed that the gut microbiota cannot only control intestinal activity but also affect bone metabolism by regulating the immune system. OBJECTIVE:To review the new research development in the effects of gut microbiota on bone metabolism. METHODS: We retrieved the PubMed database using “gut microbiota, immune system, bone metabolism, osteoporosis” as keywords. A total of 46 articles were included which were related to gut microbiota, immune system and bone metabolism. For the articles in the same field, those published recently or in authorized journals were selected. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Gut microbiota-osteoporosis research wil bridge the gaps between bone physiology, gastroenterology, immunology, and microbiology. In vivo experiments in the germ-free mice and human body have found that the gut microbiota has important effects on bone metabolism, and the intervention of antibiotics, probiotics and prebiotics has further confirmed the effects of gut microbiota on bone mass. The gut microbiota has more obvious effects on bone mass in the adolescent and post-menopause periods.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the clinical results of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction combined with the lateral retinacular release for the treatment of recurrent patellar dislocation.
METHODSFrom March 2011 to June 2013, 15 patients with recurrent patellar dislocation underwent arthroscopic MPFL reconstruction combined with the lateral retinacular release. The graft was autogenous semitendinosus and semimembranosus tendon. There were 5 males and 10 females with an average age of 19.4 years old (ranged,14 to 32 years old). The patients suffered recurrent patellar dislocation at least twice preoperatively. Preoperative conventional X-ray, CT, and MR examination were used to analyze the causes of the patellofemoral joint and MPFL injury. Preoperative Lysholm score was 69.85 ± 11.52. During operation, the arthroscopic examination was performed to evaluate the patellofemoral alignment and patellar tracking.
RESULTSAll the patients were followed up for an average of 27.6 months (ranged,12 to 36 months) with no recurrent dislocation and sub-dislocation. All the patients showed negative apprehension test at straight and 30 ° flexions of knee. The range of motion of knee returned to normal level at 12 months after operation. There were no patients with subjective discomfort of knee. Postoperative Lysholm score was improved to 92.60 ± 5.75.
CONCLUSIONThe technique of arthroscopic MPFL reconstruction combined with the lateral retinacular release is an effective surgical procedure for the treatment of recurrent patellar dislocation, which can relieve the symptom of knee and improve the patella stability and knee function.

Objective To observe the efficacy of low dose aspirin(ASA) on the platelet aggregation in aged patients with ischemic cerebrovascular diseases(ICVD). Methods Platelet aggregation by arachidonic acid(AA, 500 ?g/ml), adenosine diphosphate (ADP,5 ?mol/L), epinephrine(EPI, 5 ?mol/L), and collagen (COL,2 ?g/ml) using Born's method was induced in 70 elderly with ICVD treated with ASA (40 mg/d) and in 30 untreated patients as well as in 50 healthy controls. Results A high coefficient of variation of the maximum aggregation rate induced by AA, COL and EPI were observed in the ASA (40 mg/d) treated group. Twenty-five out of the 70 patients in the ASA treated group (40 mg/d) were found that their platelet aggregation induced by AA were not markedly inhibited. Ten patients were randomly selected from the above 25 patients to receive an increasing dose to 80 mg/d. At repeated tests, 8 of these 10 achieved marked inhibition, and 2 of the 10 who showed no inhibition continued receiving an increasing dose to 100 mg/d and then achieved marked inhibition. Conclusions There is a great individual variation in response to low dose aspirin in aged patients with ICVD, and the laboratory evaluation of aspirin efficacy and its individualization is necessary in clinical practice.

Objective To study the effects of localized thermochemotherapy on angiogenesis and the expression of VEGF protein of C6 gliomas in rats, and explore the mechanisms of angiogenesis inhibition by localized thermochemotherapy. Methods Following the establishment of animal models, 40 rats harboring the C6 gliomas were randomly allocated to 4 groups, the rats in the fore 3 groups were treated by localized thermochemotherapy, hyperthermia and chemotherapy, respectively, the remaining group served as control. The expression of VEGF and FⅧ RA protein were detected by S P immunohistochemistry. The vascular structure in rat's glioma was observed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy technique. Results As compared with the control group, the expression of VEGF protein was decreased in the hyperthermia and chemotherapy groups,as well as in the thermochemotherapy group. The expression of VEGF was positively correlated with the microvessel density in the tumor ( r =0.9798, P
