Objective To investigate the effects of television-watching and computer-using on sleep/wake patterns, sleep duration and sleep problems of school-aged children in Shanghai. Methods A total of 4 108 school-aged children from 10 primary schools of Shanghai were enrolled by multi-stage cluster sampling and surveyed by questionnaires. The information of television-watching and computer-using, family and personal condition was investigated by self-prepared questionnaire, and the Chinese version of Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was employed to survey the sleep behaviors of children. The effects of television-watching and computer-using on sleep/wake patterns, sleep duration and sleep problems were analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis and Logistic regression analysis. Results The percentage of children who watched television≥2 h per day was 4.1% during weekdays, and that came to 49.2% during weekends. In terms of frequency of computer-using, most children reported "rarely" (88.2%, 0-1 time/week), followed by "often" (11.0%, 2-4 times/ week) and "usually" (0.8%, 5-7 times/week). With the age increase, the percentages of children who watched television≥2 h per day and those who "often" used computer gradually increased. It was revealed by multiple linear regression analysis and Logistic regression analysis that television-watching and computer-using were not only positively correlated with later bedtime, later wake time and shorter sleep duration but also significantly associated with sleep problems such as bedtime resistance, sleep onset delay, sleep duration disorder, sleep anxiety and parasomnia. Conclusion Television-watching and computer-using exert influences on sleep behaviors of sleep/wake patterns, sleep duration and sleep problems. Concerns about the potential negative effects of television-watching and computer-using on sleep behaviors may help to promote healthy sleep patterns and improve sleep quality.

Background Normal adult optic disc rim width follows inferior ≥ superior ≥ nasal ≥ temporal (ISNT) rule.Analysis of the optic disc structural parameters with Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT) can understand whether ISNT principle is suitable to other optic disc structure parameters. Objective This study was to investigate the characteristics of optic nerve head structure parameters in normal Chinese adults. Methods The parents of twins who participated Guangzhou Twin Eye Study were enrolled in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center from 2006 June to 2011 August. All subjects received the routine eye examinations, including visual acuity, slit lamp microscope, direct ophthalmoscope examination,auto-refraction examination and HRT Ⅲ examination. All data from the right eyes were collected and analyzed.HRT values from different quadrants of optical nerve head were compared with one-way analysis of variance, and the multiple comparison between quadrants was carried out by Bonferroni test. The differences of optical nerve head parameters in different gender were analyzed using independent sample t test and Bland-Altman test. Results In this study,1672 eyes of 1672 subjects were included, with the 759 male and 913 female persons and average age of (41.8±5.3)years.No significant differences were seen in the disc area (DA)between the superior and inferior,as well as the nasal and temporal quadrants among the subjects (P>0.05).In addition, there were not significantly different in the rim area (RA) between the superior and nasal disc as well as the rim volume (RV) among the inferior, superior and nasal disc (P>O.05).However,significant differences were found in the cup area (CA),cup/disk area ratio (C/DAR),cup volume (CV),mean cupdepth (MCD),maximum cup depth (MxCD),height variation contour (HVC),cup shape measure (CSM),mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (mRNFLT) and retinal nerve fiber layer cross section area (RNFLcsa) among the different quadrants (P<0.001).The local differences from only DA and RA complied with an ordination of the ISNT rule. The values of DA,CA,C/DAR,CV,MCD,MxCD from male individuals were higher, but those of the RV,HVC,mRNFLT RNFLcsa were lower in comparison with female individuals.Nevertheless, all the differences were < 0.1 with a maximal mean difference in DA and CA (both 0.07 mm2).Conclusions The optical nerve head configurations measured by HRT have different distributing characteristics in four quadrants in normal adults. Most parameters show the higher values in the inferior and superior than those in nasal and temporal of disc, but DA and RA meet ISNT rule. The differences of most parameters between male and female subjects can be ignored.

Objective To evaluate the dose distribution in clinical target volume (CTV) and organs-at-risk (OARs) in three dimension therapy plans in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of tongue receiving postoperative intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) or conventional radiotherapy (CRT) by dosimetric study. Methods Thirty-five patients with squamous cell carcinoma of tongue were divided into CRT group(n=17) and IMRT group(n=18). All patients underwent head-and-neck immobilization with a thermoplastic mask and planning CT scan, and target volume and OARs were contoured. Dose calculation and plan optimization were performed. All three dimension plans passed quality assurance before treatment. The dosimetry of therapy plans with IMRT or CRT in target volume and OARs dose distribution was compared by dose-volume histogram (DVH), conformity index (CI) and homogeneous index (HI). Results There were significant differences in D95 (isodose line to cover 95 percent target volume), CI, HI, minimum dose and maximum dose in CTV of therapy plans between patients with IMRT and CRT(P < 0.01), and there was no significant difference in mean dose of CTV(P > 0.05). The radiation dose on salivary glands (both parotid glands and contralateral submandibular gland) in patients with IMRT was significantly lower than that in patients with CRT(P < 0.01). Conclusion Compared with dose distribution of CRT plans, there are more advantages in improving dose distribution at the target volume and sparing salivary glands in IMRT therapy plans in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of tongue.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2003;11(1):74-80
The aim of this study is to screen out the monoclonal antibody reactive to a kind of endothelial cell line (ECV304) from SZ-1, -2, -21, -22, -51, -65, -262 and explore its function of anti-angiogenesis. The inhibitory effects of monoclonal antibody reactive to ECV304 and human lung carcinom cells (A549) adhesion and migration to extracellular matrix proteins (i.e, fibronectin and collagen IV) were studied by ELISA, the inhibition of angiogenesis in vivo was analyzed by chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assays, the percentage of apoptotic cells in A549 cells was assayed by flow cytometric Annexin-V-FITC/PI dual labeling technique. The results showed that SZ-21 exhibited inhibitory effects on human umbilical vein endothelial cell line (ECV304) and pulmonary cancer cell line (A549) adhesion and migration to extracellular matrix proteins (i.e, fibronectin and collagen IV). In addition, it disrupted ongoing angiogenesis on the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model. SZ-21 also induced apoptosis of the A549 cells. In conclusion, SZ-21 inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro by blocking integrin beta(3) and inducing apoptosis. SZ-21 recognized the sequence beta(3) 28 - 35 which is far away from the RGD ligation site on GPIIIa. Integrin may interact the extracellular matrix via recognition sites other than RGD sequence.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of Huatuo Zaizao extractum (HTZZ) on focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) neurogenesis in rats induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and its mechanism.
METHODTotally 55 healthy adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the sham operation group, the MCAO model group and HTZZ high, middle and low dose groups (5, 2.5, 1.25 g x kg(-1)), with 11 rats in each group, and orally administered with drugs. The focal cerebral ischemia model was established by performing a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO, 90 min) followed by a seven-day reperfusion (once a day). The neurogenesis and expressions of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) were detected by the immunofluorescent staining. The enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adopted to determine the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
RESULTMCAO (90 min) followed by a seven-day reperfusion resulted in the significant increase in the number of penumbra cortex newborn neurons (BrdU(+) -NeuN(+)), which was accompanied by the growth of ERK and CREB phosphorylation and VEGF and BDNF levels. HTZZ could promote the generation of newborn neurons (BrdU(+)-NeuN(+)) and the ERK and CREB phosphorylation and increase VEGF and BDNF levels at the ischemic side.
CONCLUSIONHTZZ could promote the neurogenesis, which may be the interventional targets of effective traditional Chinese medicine Huatuo Zaizao extractum in promoting the self-repair function of the cerebral ischemic areas.
