Objective To investigate the role of synaptic plasticity on the formation of visceral hypersensitivity induced by transient intestinal infection in rats. Methods Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into normal control, acute infection and chronic infection groups with 10 each. The area under curve (AUC) of electromyography (EMG) in 10 s was used to evaluate the visceral sensitivity induced by different eolorectal distention (20,40,60 and 80 mmHg). Histological change of the colon was evaluated by H-E staining. Synaptic uhrastrueture such as synaptic cleft and synaptic vesicles was observed using transmission electron mieroseope. The mRNA and protein expressions of synaptophysin and postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95) were examined by RT-PCR and Western blot, respectively. significantly higher than those of normal controls(P=0. 012, 0. 005, respectively ). In contrast, AUC of acute infection were significantly lower than those of normal controls ( P = 0. 018,0. 012, respectively ). Under the distention of 20 and 80 mmHg, no significant difference was observed among three groups (P= rats compared to normal controls(23.45±4.10 vs. 9.10±2.42, P=0. 027),but there was no statistical difference between chronic infection rats and normal controls (13. 95±7.96 vs. 9.15±2.42, P=0.78). increased. In acute infection rats, mitochondria cristae disappeared, synaptic vesicles and the length of controls, mRNA and protein of synaptophysin in ileocecum, proximal colon and distal colon were significantly increased in chronic infection rats (P＜0. 05 ), but decreased in acute infection rats with no significant difference. Compared with controls, no significant downregulation was noted in the expression protein expressions of PSD-95 were both increased in chronic infection rats (P＜0.05), and decreased in acute infection rats (P＜0.05). Conclusion Synaptic plasticity plays an important role in the formation of visceral hypersensitivity induced by transient intestinal infection in rats.

Objective To explore the features of transsphenoidal microsurgical treatment of male pro- lactinoma and to evaluate the sexual function before and after transsphenoidal microsurgery.Methods A se- ries of 23 cases male prolactinoma were analysed combined with retrospective and prospective study.9 casese with sexual disfunction had finished the International Index of Erectile Function with 15-item questionnnaire (ⅡEF-15) before and after the surgery.Results 8/10 cases treated with dopaminergic agonist combined with surgery achieved complete remission,while only 4/13 cases achieved complete remission with surgery on- ly(x~2=5.490,P=0.036).Aecoding toⅡEF-15,sexual function improved after surgery in 9 cases(paired- sample) t test,P＜0.05).Conclusion Transsphenoidal microsurgical treatment of prolactinoma may im- prove the male sexual functions.Dopaminergic agonist combined transsphenoidal microsurgery may achieve a better outcome.

Objective To establish a model to predict the cell-cycle process in response to ionizing radiation.Methods Human choroidal malignant melanoma 92-1 cells were used and the cell cycle distribution of cells was analyzed in 0-96 h after exposure to X-rays.A phenomenological model was constructed based on biological knowledge to describe the cell cycle dynamics in experiments.Results In the present study,a phenomenological model was constructed to describe the cellcycle dynamics of synchronized 92-1 cells in responding to various doses of ionizing radiation.The simulation results obtained with the model were consistent with the experimental data,demonstrating that the model had a good expansibility and could be used to predict the dynamics of cell cycle in responding to ionizing radiation.Further theoretical modeling of the cellcycle dynamics was made and the results were consistent with the simulation.Conclusions A phenomenological model was constructed which could be used to describe the dynamics of cell cycle of cells exposed to ionizing radiation and was supported by the experimental data.Because this model is easy to run by the written code,it has a good expansibility for studying the behaviors of cell populations under various conditions.

Objective To analyze the imaging performances and significance of Modic changes on X-ray,CT and MRI.Methods The imaging data (MR,CT and X-ray)of patients with low back pain were retrospectively analyzed.The selected patients’images were studied on the same work station by the two physician experts in muscle and bone imaging.A double-blind method was used. Firstly,MRI was used to sort the MC.Then,the alterations of the density in the lesions on X-ray plain film and CT image were measured.if the judgments of the two readers were inconsistent,another professor of radiology will join the discussion and consist-ent results will be got finally.The data were recorded using Excel 2010,and processed for statistical analysis using SPSS 1 6.0.Re-sults A total of 47 cases that met the requirements were collected which included 1 6 males and 31 females,aged from 32 to 76 years,with a median age of 56.0 years.A total of 93 on MRI endplate were changed.However,a part of lumbar endplates with MC on MRI images were displayed as higher density than normal vertebral body on the X-ray and CT reconstruction images (total of 36).The occurrence rates of Type Ⅰ,Type Ⅱ,Type Ⅰ/Ⅱ were 40.0%,14.8%,58.3%,respectively.But the occurrence rate of Type Ⅲ (100%)and hybrid Type which contained type Ⅲ were 100%.Conclusion Some Modic typeⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅰ/Ⅱchanges in X-ray plain film, CT reconstruction images had a higher density,speculating that there is reactive new bone formation,which reflects the internal ver-tebral body bone mineralized rather than the change of the bone marrow.

Objective To observe the distribution of blood vessels in tibial metaphysis in ovariectomized and control mice by micro-CT(?CT),and investigate the relationship between bone regional blood supply and osteoporosis. MethodsForty mice were randomly divided into ovariectomy group(n=20) and control group(n=20).Four weeks after operation,?CT analysis was conducted to observe the bone blood vessel distribution after silicone rubber perfusion,and bone mineral density measurement,?CT bone microarchitecture analysis and biomechanical test were performed. There are actually no sufficient data for lifting technique assessment. A laboratory study was undertaken to determine the effect of 3 regular lifting techniques on erector muscle activation, cardiovascular strain and subjective response. Thirty student volunteers participated in the study, and were required to lift a weight with different techniques. Stoop-, squat-, semi-squat-lifting resulted in 3, 2 and 1 time of the highest percentage of the maximum voluntary electrical activation (MVE%) respectively. In the same order, the lowest median frequency (MF) existed 1, 1 and 2 times. Muscle fatigue was 4 times in squat, 36 in semi-squat and 43 in stoop lifting. Heart rate was the highest in squat and lowest in stoop respectively, with a middle level in semi-squat lifting. It may be recommended to adopt mainly the semi-squat technique for daily lifting works. For heavy lifting, it should use the squat technique. Stoop lifting may also be used alternatively but for light things.

INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical outcome of traumatic subtrochanteric fractures fixed with long proximal femoral nail (PFN) or long gamma nail with particular emphasis on our experience of surgical techniques.

MATERIALS AND METHODSWe reviewed the results of 49 consecutive patients who had undergone intramedullary fixation specifically with a long PFN or a long gamma nail for traumatic subtrochanteric fractures in our hospital during a 2-year period from January 2003 to December 2004. The average age of the patients was 53 years. Clinical and radiographic analyses were performed when follow-up was made at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years.

RESULTSAll the 49 traumatic subtrochanteric fractures healed uneventfully except 1 case of delayed union. Walking and squatting ability was completely restored in every case at follow-up examination 6 months postoperatively. Among them, 32 fractures were successfully reduced with traction on a fracture table under fluoroscopy, but cerclage wiring or cable bandage through a small incision was needed in the other 17 cases. The average operative time was 46 minutes (range, 21 to 98). Eighteen Seinsheimer type II fractures were left unlocked distally, and static distal interlocking with 1 bolt was carried out in the other 31 cases. No complications such as cutout or breakage of the implants were encountered.

CONCLUSIONSThis study suggests that long PFN or long gamma nail is a reliable implant for subtrochanteric fractures, leading to high rate of bone union and minimal soft tissue damage. Intramedullary fixation has biological and biomechanical advantages, but the operation is technically demanding. Gradual learning and great patience is needed in order to make this method truly minimally invasive.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the mineral origin of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Yangqishi and Yinqishi and guide identification of the both, by X-ray diffraction (XRD) Fourier patterns. Morphological identification and conventional physical and chemical analysis wee used to identify 22 batches of Yangqishi and Yinqishi. It used XRD Fourier patterns which has been collected from sample powders to analyze phase composition. It has been found experimentally that the mineral origin of Yinqishi is Talc schist and the mineral origin of Yangqishi is tremolite and actinolite. The results also showed that the method using XRD can get not only an accurate but also rapid identification of Yangqishi and Yinqishi. There are many differences in medicinal properties, efficacy, indications and composition of Yangqishi and Yinqishi, so be careful not to mix them up.

A method was proposed for the separation and determination of paraffin waxes in food by HPLC-evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD). A normal-phase column was used to separate nonparaffinic and paraffinic materials without resolving the latter into individual components. The t-test method was adopted for the evaluation of mean difference between response factors of n-alkanes in paraffin waxes on ELSD detector. No mean difference was obtained between response factors, which can be used for quantitative determination of paraffin waxes in food. The determination results obtained by HPLC-ELSD were compared with those by GC-MS. The linear range for the determination of paraffin waxes was in the range from 10 to 500 mg/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9988, and the limit of detection was 1.0 mg/L. With the spiking level of 10, 50 and 100 mg/kg, the recovery ranged from 84.6% to 105.4% and the relative standard deviation ranging from 5.4% to 7.2%. The proposed method is simple, fast and sensitive.
