Objective To study cerebral cortical activation preoperatively and postoperatively in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), and discuss effect of the surgery on cortical reorganization in functional recovery. Methods 19 cases with CSM intrial group underwent cervical vertebra canal decompression surgery according to clinical routine.Cases in trial group completed clinical assessment using the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scores (mJOA) prior to decompression and 12 months following surgery, and underwent cerebral functional MRI and conventional MRI in the same time.19 controls also carried out cerebral functional MRI and conventional MRI.All subjects performed a finger-tapping paradigm with right hand during processing functional MRI.The imagings and data of trial group were divided into preoperative group and postoperative group in accordance with the time of completed and than analysed. Results The mJOA score of postoperative group was increased significantly (P<0.001).Cortical volume of activation (VOA) of preoperative group was significantly higher than the control group (P<0.05).VOA was lower in the postoperative group, but still significantly higher than the control group (P<0.05).The preoperative group was able to detect and activate the signal only in the left precentral gyrus. The postoperative group was able to detect and activate the signal in the l left postcentral gyrus, the premotor area and the supplementary motor area, and the right cerebral cortex could also detect a small amount of activation signal. Conclusion CSM patients undergo cerebral cortical remodeling, causing sensory and motor function activation areas to expand and shift. The changes of cortical reorganization after cervical vertebra canal decompression surgery are associated with functional recovery. The surgical treatment may promote the compensating cortical reorganization.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2005;9(4):213-215
BACKGROUND:No particularly effective medicine could treat human immunodeficiency virus 1(HIV 1) associated dementia(HAD) at present, which mainly because the mechanism of HIV 1 infection induced neural damage and necrosis is still not completely clarified. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effects of human immunodeficiency virus I type(HIV 1) enveloped protein(EP) gp120 on the synaptic transmission and plasticity in hippocampal CA1 area of rat to clarify the mechanism of HAD generation. DESIGN:A paired design. SETTING:Department of Pathophysiology of Medical College of Jinan University. MATERIALS:The study was conducted in the Department of Pathophysiology(a tertiary national key laboratory of National Administration for Traditional Chinese Medicine, registration number: TCM 03 131) of the Medical College of Jinan University from January to October of 2003.Male SD rats aged between 2 and 5 weeks were used in the study. INTERVENTIONS:Brain slice perfusion and recording technique was employed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:To record the excitatory postsynaptic potential(EPSP) in hippocampal CA1 area in rat;to investigate the effects of gp120 on long term potentiation(LTP) induced by high frequency electric stimulation in Schaffer lateral branch. RESULTS:gp120 had inhibitive effect on LTP in hippocampal CA1 area in rat [the average amplitude of LTP decreased from normal (216.1± 14.0) % to(90.8± 6.0) % ,n=12,P< 0.01],but had no effect on basic EPSP.PKA/PKC protein kinase(PK) inhibitor H7 could reverse this inhibitive effect [the average amplitude of LTP was(198.8± 16.2) % ,n=8,P< 0.01]. CONCLUSION:gp120 might participate the generation of HAD through inhibiting LTP in hippocampal CA1 area.

Objective To understand the current status of health knowledge demands and its associated factors in general population. Methods A questionnaire-based survey by convenience sampling method was carried out in 700 subjects aged over 15 years old in October 2014. Information of demographics and health knowledge demands were collected. Data was analyzed using SPSS 17.0. Results A total of 653 subjects were responded, with a response rate of 93.3%. Respondents in male and female were 339 (51.9%) and 314 (48.1%) respectively. There were no differences among age , educational levels and self-reported health status between the two genders 86.6% of the participants showed that they had interests in health knowledge. Educational level and age were the factors associated with the interests. 65.8% and 72.3% of people want to get practical health knowledge of western and traditional Chinese medicine respectively. The top concern of health issues were cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. For preferred ways of learning health knowledge , television is the favorite one (44%), especially in elderly (over 63.8%). A relative high option rate was newspaper and magazine in all age groups. However, young people showed that they preferred the ways of the internet and Wechat (about 50%). For health disseminators, the participants in all age had greatest trust in experts in large hospitals (over 60%). The second option was retired old experts. The experienced patients were convinced in some degree and increased with age. Conclusions In future, health education in general population should considered the characteristics of the population and the applicability of knowledge. Besides , it is necessary to integrate traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine, traditional media with new media, also authoritative experts and living example.
