Objective To explore causes of complications after endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) , for patients with superficial varicosities of the lower extremities. Methods In this study, 207 patients with a total of 268 lower limbs were treated by EVLT combined with surgical procedures. According to CEAP classification, there were C2 in 268 limbs, C3 in 56 limbs, C4 in 101, C5 in 23 and C6 in 18. Simple EVLT was performed for 25 limbs in 21 patients; EVLT combined with external banding valvuloplasty of superficial femoral vein for 23 limbs in 23 patients; EVLT combined with ligation of great saphenous vein (CSV) and denudation of superficial varicosities for 220 limbs in 163 patients. Results An average of 10?5 (3-24) months of follow up was achieved in 175 cases. Early complications (within the first 2-weeks after operation) included bruising or ecchymosis (178 cases, 66.42%) and skin burning (56, 20.90% ). Three month complication included painful induration or trabs (235 cases, 87. 69% ) as well as thrombophlebitis (28, 10. 45% ). Long-term complication (after 3 months) included skin numbness or pain at medial knee or ankle region (15,5. 60% ). Recanalization of CSV occurred in 4( 1. 49% ) treated limbs. Residual or reoccurred varicose veins were found in 13(4. 85% ) cases. Movement related swelling appeared in 6(2. 24% ) lower limbs. Conclusion EVLT is effective for patients with superficial varicosities of the lower extremities. Minor complications most often subsided within 3 months. Strict surgical protocol and high ligation of the GSV could prevent local recurrence of the varicose veins and the recanalization of GSV.

Background Magnetic activated cell sorting(MACS)is a new immunomagnetic separation technique. It's principle is based on the specialized recognition between the antibody and antigen. When directed or indirected coupled with the 50 nm magnetic beads, the antibody can linked with the cells which express the corresponding antigen, and then leads to the magnetic cell separation in a high intensity and high-gradient magnetic field. The method has higher separative purity and recovery and been made use of enriching tumor cells and tumor stem cells. It could be also utilized to enrich the rare tumor cells in fluid specimen. Objective To evaluate the enriching efficiency of detecting free cancer cells in analogue malignant ascites using MACS and a panel of tumor-specific markers. Methods Five species of tumor cell lines correlated to the diseases resulting in malignant ascites were selected and the expressions of EpCAM,CAl25,CEA,TAG-72 and their mixture in these tumor cell lines were detected using immunofluorescence reactions and flow cytometry(FCM).The tumor cells were spiked into mononuclear cells by different ratios to analogue the main ingredients of malignant ascites. The efficiency of MACS combinded with mixture antibodies in separating tumor cells was compared with single antibody. Results The FCM revealed that the expression of the mixture antibodies in 5 tumor cancer cell lines was significantly higher than that in single antibody. The mean recovery rates of spiked tumor cells were enhanced by using a panel of monoclonal antibodies combined with MACS than single antibody, especially in two gastric cancer cells and colon cancer cells(69.18%±20.84%VS 45.23%±11.54%,78.75%±15.42%vs 59.73%±16.64%and 85.63%±12.30%VS 76.88%±8.65%,respectively),the ovarian cancer cells was the next(32.49%±3.58%vs31.79%±4.82%),and the liver cancer cells was the lowest(11.78%±0.43%VS 7.16%±0.46%).Conclusions The detection of free cancer cells from malignant ascites by MACS combined with a panel of monoelonal antibodies is more effectively than single antibody. The method has the potencial value of clinical application to the malignant ascites caused by gastroenteric tumor.

Portable low-cost magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems have the potential to enable “point-of-care” and timely MRI diagnosis, and to make this imaging modality available to routine scans and to people in underdeveloped countries and areas. With simplicity, no maintenance, no power consumption, and low cost, permanent magnets/magnet arrays/magnet assemblies are attractive to be used as a source of static magnetic field to realize the portability and to lower the cost for an MRI scanner. However, when taking the canonical Fourier imaging approach and using linear gradient fields, homogeneous fields are required in a scanner, resulting in the facts that either a bulky magnet/magnet array is needed, or the imaging volume is too small to image an organ if the magnet/magnet array is scaled down to a portable size. Recently, with the progress on image reconstruction based on non-linear gradient field, static field patterns without spatial linearity can be used as spatial encoding magnetic fields (SEMs) to encode MRI signals for imaging. As a result, the requirements for the homogeneity of the static field can be relaxed, which allows permanent magnets/magnet arrays with reduced sizes, reduced weight to image a bigger volume covering organs such as a head. It offers opportunities of constructing a truly portable low-cost MRI scanner. For this exciting potential application, permanent magnets/magnet arrays have attracted increased attention recently. A magnet/magnet array is strongly associated with the imaging volume of an MRI scanner, image reconstruction methods, and RF excitation and RF coils, etc. through field patterns and field homogeneity. This paper offers a review of permanent magnets and magnet arrays of different kinds, especially those that can be used for spatial encoding towards the development of a portable and low-cost MRI system. It is aimed to familiarize the readers with relevant knowledge, literature, and the latest updates of the development on permanent magnets and magnet arrays for MRI. Perspectives on and challenges of using a permanent magnet/magnet array to supply a patterned static magnetic field, which does not have spatial linearity nor high field homogeneity, for image reconstruction in a portable setup are discussed.

Objective To investigate serum vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C), VEGF-D and VEGFR-3 levels in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and analyze their relation with the clinicopathological and thyroid function of the patients. Methods Serum samples and the data of thyroid function were collected from 55 patients with PTC and 24 with benign thyroid tumor (BT). ELISA was used to detect VEGF-C/D and VEGFR-3 concentration in the serum samples and their relation with the thyroid function was analyzed. Results The VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 levels were significantly higher in PTC group than in BT group (P<0.05), but VEGF-D level was comparable between them (P>0.05). In PTC patients, the elevation of serum VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 levels was associated with an advanced clinical stage (III-IV), elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level, an age over 45 years, and a tumor diameter exceeding 2 cm (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Patients with lymph node metastasis had significantly higher VEGF-C level but lower VEGF-3 level than those without metastasis regardless of gender. Serum VEGF-D level was higher in PTC patients with lymph node metastasis (P<0.05) and elevated TSH level (P<0.01) without association with the clinical stage, tumor diameter, age, or gender. The area under ROC curve (AUC) of serum VEGF-C, VEGFR-3 and TSH was 0.803, 0.734 and 0.707 respectively (P<0.01), and that of VEGF-D was 0.556 (P>0.05);when combined, serum VEGF-C, VEGFR-3 and TSH showed an AUC of 0.862 (P<0.01). Conclusion Detecting serum VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 levels combined with TSH may enhance the early diagnosis rate of papillary thyroid carcinoma.
