OBJECTIVETo investigate the influence of the diameter and length of the mini-implant on the primary stability after loading with composite forces (CF) which contained torque and horizontal forces (HF).
METHODSNinety-six finite element models were established by the combination of mini-implant and bone, diameters (1.2 mm, 1.6 mm, 2.0 mm) and length (6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm). There were 12 sizes, each size corresponded with 8 models. Group HF (each size n = 4) was loaded with 1.96 N horizontal force and Group CF (each size n = 4) was loaded with composite force which contained 6 N·mm torque and 1.96 N horizontal force. The maximum displacement of mini-implant with different force directions, implant diameters and lengths were evaluated.
RESULTSThe effect of force direction on the displacement related to diameter of mini-implant. The maximum displacement under load with HF respectively was changed with the changing of diameter[1.2 mm: (7.71 ± 0.49) µm; 1.6 mm: (3.94 ± 0.31) µm; 2.0 mm: (2.32 ± 0.43) µm], which were smaller than the maximum displacement of Group CF [1.2 mm: (9.22 ± 0.63) µm; 1.6 mm: (4.62 ± 0.52) µm; 2.0 mm: (2.69 ± 0.49) µm] (P < 0.05). When diameter was 1.2 mm, the difference of the maximum displacement [(1.61 ± 0.22) µm] between Group HF and CF was more obvious than that when the diameter was 1.6 mm or 2.0 mm [(0.64 ± 0.12), (0.49 ± 0.06) µm] (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe composite force had unfavorable effect on the primary stability of the mini-implant. The diameter of the mini-implant had better be larger than 1.2 mm when the composite forces were applied.

OBJECTIVETo explore gene expression of estrogen receptor (ERalpha, ERbeta) and androgen receptor (AR) in genioglossal muscle (GG) of adult male rats, and to investigate the effects of sex hormones on GG activities, ERalpha, ERbeta and AR expression.
METHODSGG samples were collected from 10 healthy adult male rats. Total RNA were extracted and subjected to fluorescent quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (FQ RT-PCR) for quantitative measurement of ERalpha, ERbeta and AR mRNAs. The other 24 male rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: control group, estrogen group (intramuscular injection of estrogen 0.1 mg/kg, twice a week) and androgen group (intramuscular injection of androgen 2.5 mg/kg, twice a week). The electromyographic activities (EMG) and contract tension of GG were investigated after 4-week treatment. The expression of ERalpha, ERbeta and AR was assessed by Western blot.
RESULTSThe mRNA expression ratios of AR/GAPDH, ERalpha/GAPDH, ERbeta/GAPDH and ERalpha/ERbeta were (295.80 +/- 127.20), (2042.00 +/- 921.57), (65.96 +/- 29.57) and (36.83 +/- 19.66), respectively. The mRNA level of ERalpha was significantly higher than that of ERbeta (P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the EMG of GG was intensified in the estrogen group (P < 0.01). GG contractility did not change significantly (P > 0.05), and ERalpha expression in GG was up-regulated by estrogen (P < 0.05); while in the androgen group, the EMG of GG was weakened (P < 0.05). P(t) and P(0) were slightly increased (P > 0.05) and the decline rate of P(0) was markedly quickened (P < 0.05). AR and ERbeta expressions were down-regulated by androgen (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSBoth AR and ER were expressed in GG of adult male rats, and ERalpha was expressed more abundantly than ERbeta. Estrogen could greatly improve activities of GG and stimulate the expression of ERalpha. Whereas, androgen could restrain activities of GG, impair its fatigue resistance capacity and inhibit the expression of AR and ERbeta.

Chinese Medical Journal 2010;123(9):1139-1144
BACKGROUNDConventional computed tomography angiography (CTA) is time consuming, user-dependent and has poor image quality in skull base region. This study assessed the feasibility of a new method, dual energy CTA for depicting the cerebral artery.
METHODSPhantom scan was done with head CTA sequences on dual source CT and 64 spiral CT for radiation dose calculation. Dual energy CTA was done with dual source CT on 36 patients who were suspected of having cerebral vascular disease. Three series axial images in 0.75 mm thick, 0.4 mm increment were acquired, which were named with 80 kV, 140 kV and merged images; 80 kV and 140 kV images were transferred into dual energy software, and maximum intensity projection (MIP) image was generated quickly by dual energy bone remove (DEBR group); merged images were transferred into In Space software to acquire MIP image through manual conventional bone remove (CoBR group). Post processing time and reading time were compared. Image qualities of the two groups were compared, mainly focusing on skull base segments of internal carotid artery and bone subtraction. ANOVA and SNK tests were applied for radiation dose comparison. Student's t test and Wilcoxon rank sum test were applied for assessing differences between data for significance. Cohen's kappa was used for interobserver agreement.
RESULTSRadiation dose of phantom scan showed dual energy CTA was between digital bone subtraction and conventional CTA. The post processing time and reading time were much shorter in DEBR than CoBR, and image quality in skull base was much higher in DEBR than CoBR (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference for suprasellar vessels between two groups (P > 0.5). Interobserver agreement for all vessel segments was excellent (kappa = 0.97).
CONCLUSIONSDual energy CTA is a reliable, new modality for depicting cerebral artery, overcoming the limitation of conventional CTA in the skull base region. It can save much time in post processing and reading than conventional CTA.
