Manganese(Mn) is one of the essential trace elements in biologic metabolism. With proper quantity,Mn acts as some enzymes’active groups, reactivators, and participates in the physiological functions of central nervous system.Overdose exposure to Mn in industry may result in occurrence of occupational manganism, which can cause damage of many aspects of the body such as nerve, immunity and reproduction. The aim of present essay is to review the current studies on nerval behavior function and biomarkers of manganism both in China and other countries.

Results Under the condition of wind velocity of 100-600 cm/s, relative humidity of 40%-80% and temperature of 10-40 ℃, the sampling flux of the passive sampler was 61.8 ml/min, the capacity was 5.95 mg, the shortest sampling time was 30 min, the self life was at least 30 days, the storage stability was at least 14 days, the RSDs were 8.07%-9.37%. Conclusion This new kind of passive personal sampler can be used as a new device for the determination of the styrene in the air.

Journal of Audiology and Speech Pathology 2009;17(3):205-209
Objective To observe differences between repeat and written response in speech recognition tests of short Mandarin monosyllable lists. Methods 12 normal-hearing subjects were tested by 6 short monosyllabic lists. The subjects should repeat and write down.the contents of the tests at the same time, the tester monitors au-rally and records the subjects' reactions. The speech recognition scoring error under different responses at different presentation levels could be obtained by comparing the records of the subjects with the tester. Results The speech recognition scoring of repeat and written response were highly correlated with each other (P<0.01). However, 19(26.4%) out of 72 pairs of test records were inconsistent. The error range of them was from -5% to 10%. When the presentation level was 5 dB HL, the difference among the speech recognition scoring was significant statistically, but not significant when the presentation level at 20, 15, 10 and 0 dB HL. Conclusion The test results of speech audiometry are impacted by different respond methods. In the open-set test, it's supposed that the subjects should make notes while repeating the contents of the tests, then compare with the aural monitoring records of the tester to keep the reliability of the test.

The association between fasting plasma ghrelin levels and insulin resistance and blood pressure (BP) in octogenarians was investigated in this study. A total of 487 unrelated octogenarians (including 203 men and 284 women) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study at the Healthy Care Center of Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University, China, from October 2008 to April 2009. Plasma ghrelin was determined by using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Insulin sensitivity was assessed using the homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The age of the participants ranged from 80 to 89 years (mean=83.9+/-4.8 years) with a body mass index (BMI) of 25.3+/-4.9 kg/m(2). Plasma ghrelin levels were 20.94+/-5.34 mug/L, being 20.89+/-5.53 mug/L in men and 21.38+/-3.73 mug/L in women respectively. Plasma ghrelin was not associated with systolic (P=0.981) or diastolic (P=0.724) BP, waist circumference (P=0.278), fasting insulin (P=0.246), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (P=0.693) and HOMA-IR (P=0.232). In the control cohort, no significant differences in plasma ghrelin were found between genders (P=0.489), and among subjects with hypertension (BP>140/90 mmHg) (P=0.284) and type 2 diabetes (P=0.776). In conclusion, fasting plasma ghrelin levels are not directly correlated with insulin resistance and BP among octogenarians.

Objective To study the value of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) in the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic neoplasms. Methods The patients who were suspected of malignant pelvic neoplasms were performed MRI.The surgical approach was determined according to the MRI results. The MRI results were compared with operation findings and pathological reports. Results The MRI results were consistent with operation findings and pathological reports in 22 cases highly suspected of pelvic neoplasms and 15 cases with abnormal endometrial echo.Therapeutic regimen was designed for 5 cases with uterine cervix cancer according to MRI stages, and favourable surgical curative effects were obtained. Conclusion MRI provides a reliable guideline for surgical approach and may improve the outcomes.

BACKGROUND: As magnetic resonance (MR) contrast, a large number of clinical and experimental researches have been done on superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO), while the report on the labeled cell passaged cells is rare.OBJECTIVE: MR imaging was performed to the labeled bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and its passaged cells in vitro, in order to establish the base of monitoring magnetic labeled BMSCs with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in vivo.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: The cytological in vitro experiment was performed at the Imaging Research Institute and Institute of Rheumatology and Immunology of North Sichuan Medical College Hospital from June 2006 to January 2007. MATERIALS: Two clean female albino rats (Animal Center, North Sichuan Medical College), SPIO (Schering AG,Germany) were used in this study.METHODES: Bilateral femur and tibia bone marrow was extracted from rats. BMSCs were harvested and purified using the adherent method, and then labeled with 600 μL ferric oxide-polylysine compound (42 mg/L iron concentration) in vitro. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cell maker-positive rate and the MR signal intensity were respectively measured to the labeled cells and its passaged cells under the inverted microscope and magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Following Prussian blue staining, labeling rate of SPIO labeled cells at the first passage was 100%. With increased passage, the labeling rate was reduced from the first to fifth passages. Compared with non-labeled PBS control, there was no significant difference in signal intensity in the first and second passages cells, but the signal intensity percentage was gradually decreased with signal intensity of increased cell passage from the third passage. Cell labeling rate was negatively correlated with T2~*WI signal intensity (r=-0.986 6, P <0.005). CONCLUSION: The iron particles in the magnetic labeled cells can be passaged to the offspring cells, and can be monitored in a certain period of time with MRI in vitro. These results firstly introduced that SPIO-labeled cell iron particles can decrease with cell passage.
