Objective Coralline hydroxyapatite (CHA),in comparison with Bio-Oss bone meal,is a material with extensive resources but no immunogenicity or risk of disease-transmission. The aim of this article was to study the clinical application of CHA in ridge preservation in the maxillary anterior zone. Methods Twenty-six patients underwent extraction of maxillary anterior teeth (n=26) for chronic periodontitis or periapical periodontitis. The patients were randomly assigned into a CHA and a control group of equal number to receive ridge preservation with CHA and Bio-Oss bone meal respectively. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed immediately and at 4 months after ridge preservation to compare the vertical and horizontal alterations of the alveolar ridge be-tween the two groups of patients. Results After ridge preservation, both the CHA and control groups showed a reduction in the width ([1.1±0.7] vs [1.3±1.9] mm) and height of the alveolar ridge ([1.3±1.6] vs [1.2±1.4] mm),but with no statistically significant differences between the two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion For ridge preservation in the maxillary anterior zone,CHA has a similar effect to that of Bio-Oss bone meal and therefore is an ideal material for bone graft.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2007;32(4):631-636
OBJECTIVE:
To explore whether oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) can stimulate the cholesterol efflux in fully differentiated 3T3-L1 cells and the possible mechanism.
METHODS:
Fully differentiated 3T3-L1 cells were incubated in the medium containing various concentrations of ox-LDL ( 0 to 50 microg/mL) for 8 or 24 hours. 22(R)-Hydroxycholesterol (10 micromol/L) was exposed to preconditioned adipocytes with 25 microg/mL ox-LDL for 24 hours. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to evaluate ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI), and liver X receptor alpha (LXRalpha) mRNA expression. Cholesterol efflux mediated by apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) was determined using liquid scintillator.
RESULTS:
Low levels (12.5-25 microg/mL) of ox-LDL could increase cholesterol efflux via the enhancement of ABCA1 pathway and SR-BI expression, whereas the higher concentration (50 microg/mL) could not. In adipocytes preincubated with 25 microg/mL ox-LDL for 24 hours, 22(R)-hydroxycholesterol could increase ABCA1 and LXRalpha mRNA and apoA-I-mediated cholesterol efflux, but had no effect on the SR-BI mRNA expression.
CONCLUSION
Low levels of ox-LDL may enhance the LXRalpha-ABCA1-apoA-I pathway in adipocytes, up-regulate SR-BI mRNA expression, and then increase the cholesterol efflux. This new effect of ox-LDL will not only make contribution to cholesterol homeostasis in adipocytes, but also be potentially atheroprotective.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the rehabilitation effect of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation( NPPV) in treating pneumoconiosis patients with pulmonary dyspnea. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was used to analyze the treatment compliance, treatment time, treatment effect and adverse reactions of 295 pneumoconiosis patients who had undergone inpatient NPPV treatment. RESULTS: The median of NPPV treatment time of 295 pneumoconiosis patients was 14( 1-281)days. The treatment compliance rate was 79. 66 %( 235 /295). The dyspnea improvement rate was 73. 22 %( 216 /295).The Chi-square test results showed that the dyspnea improvement rate increased with the prolonged treatment time( P <0. 01). Among these, the dyspnea improvement rates of groups with treatment time of 10 days,20 days and ≥ 30 days were higher than group with treatment time < 10 days, the dyspnea improvement rate of the group with treatment time ≥30days was higher than 10 days group( P < 0. 01). The incidence of adverse reactions was 7. 12 %. CONCLUSION: NPPV treatment could improve dyspnea symptoms of pneumoconiosis patients with less adverse reaction.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the utilization of hospital service and its related influencing factors among patients with occupational pneumoconiosis. METHODS: A total of 178 patients with occupational pneumoconiosis were selected as the study subjects using the convenience sampling method. The utilization of hospital service and health-related quality of life of patients with pneumoconiosis and its complications were investigated using the Questionnaire on Pneumoconiosis Patients′ Medical Consultation Behavior and its Influencing Factors and the European Quality of Life Inventory.RESULTS: The one-year hospitalization rate of patients with pneumoconiosis was 57.3%(102/178), and 88.2% of the patients were hospitalized once a year. The median number of hospitalization time in a year was 20.0 days. Visual health scale(VAS) score was(58±15) points. The multiple logistic regression analysis results showed that the utilization of hospital service among patients with employment injury insurance and fund reimbursement provided by the local governmentwere higher than those without employment injury insurancea nd without fund reimbursement provided by the local government(all P<0.05). The utilization of hospital service of patients with problems in usual activities and those unable to perform usual activities were higher than those without any problems(P<0.05). The utilization hospital service of patients with VAS scores <60 was higher than those with VAS scores of 60-<75(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The patients with pneumoconiosis have a relatively overall high level of utilization of hospital service. The employment injury insurance, fund reimbursement provided by the local government, VAS score, and status of physical health are important influencing factors of utilization of hospital service.

OBJECTIVETo explore the central mechanism of postoperative fatigue syndrome by detecting the expression of NMDA receptor and tryptophan metabolism.
METHODSAfter being numbered according to the weight, ninety-six male SD rats were randomly divided into control group (bowel loop was flipped after laparotomy and received intraperitoneal injection of saline at a dose of 1 ml/kg), POFS model(70% of the length of small intestine was resected and received intraperitoneal injection of saline at a dose of 1 ml/kg), and NMDA antagonist groups(70% of the length of small intestine was resected and received intraperitoneal injection of MK801 at a dose of 1 ml/kg). Each group was divided into subgroups by postoperative 1, 3, 5 and 7 d, with 8 rats in each subgroup. The hippocampus was removed at each time point after open field test (OFT) to detect the mRNA expression levels of NMDA receptor 1 and kynurenine aminotransferase III((KATIII() by real-time PCR. Protein level of NMDA receptor 1 was detected by Western blot. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure the concentrations of tryptophan (TRP), kynurenine (KYN) and kynurenic acid(KYNA). Ultra-structural changes of hippocampal neurons were observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).
RESULTSAs compared to control group, exercise score decreased(P<0.05), rest time and central panel residence time prolonged, periphery/central panel ratio increased (all P<0.05), mRNA and protein expressions of NMDA receptor 1 increased (P<0.05), mRNA expression of KAT III( decreased (P<0.05), KYN/TRP ratio and KYN/KYNA ratio decreased (all P<0.05) in POFS group on postoperative day 1 and 3. As compared to POFS group, central panel residence time and periphery/central panel ratio decreased on postoperative day 1, and mRNA and protein expressions of NMDA receptor 1 decreased on postoperative day 1 and 3 (all P<0.05) in antagonist group. TEM revealed that degenerated neuron was found in the hippocampus of POFS rats, while such damage was improved in antagonist group.
CONCLUSIONThe increased expression level of NMDA receptor may play an important role in POFS. NMDA receptor antagonist MK801 may improve the POFS.
