OBJECTIVETo develop a method for determination of mandelic acid (MA) and phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA) in urine by reagent-free ion chromatography.
METHODSIon chromatography was performed on an AS19 column with a gradient elution solution containing 10-35 mmoL/L KOH at a flow rate of 1.00 ml/min, and MA and PGA were detected at ultraviolet wavelengths of 225 nm and 254 nm, respectively. The samples were diluted 10 times with purified water, then purified on a silver column to remove high concentrations of chloride ion, and injected after being filtered through a 0.2-µm m filter membrane.
RESULTSThe recoveries of standard addition of MA and PGA were 96.5% and 99.3%, respectively, with both relative standard deviations less than 5.0%. Good linear relationships were noted in the range of 1.0-100.0 mg/L for both MA and PGA (r >0.9995). The detection limits of MA and PGA were 0.02 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, respectively; the minimum detectable concentrations of MA and PGA were 0.2 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L (when the sampling amount was 5.0 ml and diluted to 50.0 ml with water, and the injection volume was 300 µL).
CONCLUSIONSThis method is fast, convenient, and highly sensitive and selective. It can be used for the analysis of MA and PGA in the urine of styrene-exposed workers.

Object To explore the regularity of recipe composition by observing different bacteriostasis among compositions of Gegen Qinlian Decoction (GQD) against Streptococcus pneumoniae. MethodsTo evaluate the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 15 decoctions through double fold dilution method. Results Not all of the decoctions are of the same MIC. Conclusion Not all of the 15 decoctions have the same bacteriostasis against S. pneumoniae. Among the four herbs of GQD Coptis chinensis Franch. has the strongest bacteriostasis and the next Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. While Glycyrrhina wralensis Fisch and Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi have no bacteriostasis, but they can influence the bacteriostasis of C. chinensis and S. baicalensis when combinating with them.

To observe whether plasma levels of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) can be decreased in patients with cerebrovascular diseases after the treatment with aspirin. Methods:A total of 1,400 patients were recruited. Among them,803 patients were diagnosed as probable ischemic stroke, and 343 patients were diagnosed as ischemic stroke. Thirty-four health volunteers were used as control subjects. The levels of LPA were measured by chromatography with the combination of inorganic phosphorus quantitative method. Results: The levels of LPA in the ischemic cerebrovascular group (3.11 ± 1.55 μmol/L) were significantly higher than those in the control group (1.77 ± 1.04 μmol/L) (P < 0.001). Taking aspirin (80 mg,qd) for one month significantly decreased the levels of LPA. After stopping aspirin for one month, the level of LPA re-elevated (3.90 ± 1.09 μmol/L),was higher than that during administration of aspirin (1.93 ±0.85 μmol/L(P <0.001). Conclusions: There are close correlations between the increased levels of LPA and the platelet activation. Aspirin decreases the level of plasma LPA;this may be one of the mechanisms of aspirin in prevention against ischemic stroke.

Objective To evaluate the value of 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT DAT imaging in the early diagnosing of Parkinsons disease (PD).Methods Eleven patients (9 PD and 2 possible PD) and eighteen healthy subjects matched by sex and age were studied with 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT DAT imaging. Striatum specific uptake of 99mTc-TRODAT-1 was calculated according to the ratio of DAT uptake in striatum (ST) and cerebellum (CB). Results In the hemi-Parkinsons disease group, the DAT specific uptake of 99mTc-TRODAT-1 was significantly lower (P<0.01) in contralateral than in ipsilateral striatum to the clinically symptomatic side. There was significant decrease (p<0.01) of striatum DAT uptake in patients with hemi-PD compared to the controls. Conclusions 99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT DAT imaging may help to confirm the diagnosis of PD at the early stage.
