Many beneficial bioactive substances were produced by Paenibacillus polymyxa such as antibiotics, antimicrobial proteins, plant hormones and flocculants. These bioactive substances also could be produced by Paenibacillus polymyxa making it show excellent prospect in biological control of plant diseases, treatment of mankind and animals. This article summarizes research advances in Paenibacillus polymyxa and their bioactive substances.

BackgroundThe research of corneal thickness after pars plana vitrectomy in DM patient plays an important role not only theoretically but clinically.Objective Present study was to evaluate the change in corneal thickness after pars plana vitrectomy.Methods A prospective coherent study was designed.Seventy-five eyes of 70 consecutive diabetic retinopathy(DR) patients were collected in Tianjin Medical University Eye Center.Pentacam was used to assess the central and periphery corneal thickness by the same investigator preoperatively and 7 days,1 and 3 months postoperatively,respectively.The thickness values from five corneal zone were obtained,including cornea vertex,the thinnest point of the cornea,periphery cornea near the scleral incision of 4 mm away to vertex of cornea on vertical and 240°,120°,60° meridian ( right eye) or 300°,120°,60° meidian ( left eye ).These results were compared and analyzed with ANOVA of repeated measurement data.Subgroup analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of different corneal positions,the use of conventional 20g or 23g transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy(TSV) groups,surgery duration,gas or fluid endotamponde on corneal thickness.This study was approved by Ethic Committee of this hospital.Written informed consent was obtained from the subjects before any relative medical procedure.Results The mean corneal thickness was ( 639.9 ± 103.1 ),( 689.5 ± 119.3 ),( 666.5 ±113.7),( 650.8 ± 108.6 ) μm before operation,postperative 7 days,1 and 3 months respectively.As covariates appearing in the model,the corneal thickness change rates were revised as the parameters as following: diabeitc duration =13.0 and age =57.2.The revised corneal thickness was significant different among various time points( F=210.928,P=0.000) and different corneal zones(F=24.843,P=0.000) with the size order in turn P4＞P3＞P1＞P2＞P5.The corneal thickness change rates were less in 23g TSV group compared with conventional 20-g group (F =53.843,P =0.000) and BSS tamponade group compared with gas tamponade group ( F =5.288,P =0.022).But no significant difference was found in the revised corneal thickness among surgery duration ＜ 1 hour group,1-2 hour group and ＞2 hour group( F=1.233,P =0.293).ConclusionsVitrectomy is a safe procedure on the ground of cornea,but TSV and fluid endotamponade appear to be more beneficial to the protection of cornea.Pentacam could offer the reliable data in not only central cornea but also periphery cornea.

Background Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is an immune related receptor.It plays an important role in inducing inflammation response.The inflammatory response secondary to optic nerve crush will results in serious retinal damage.It is worthy of studying the expression and effect of TLR4 in retina after optic nerve crush.Objective This experimental study was to explore the role of TLR4 in the loss of retinal ganglion cells(RGCs) after optic nerve crush.Methods Twenty-four SPF adult health Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used in the study and radomized into two groups based to the experimental time.The optical nerve crush models were established by crushing the optical nerve in the right eyes of the rats,and the left normal eyes served as controls.The rats were sacrificed by over anesthesia and retinas were isolated 3 days and 7 days after operation.Expression of TLR4 in the retinas was detected using immunofluorescence method.Reverse trancription PCR (RT-PCR) and Western blot were applied respectively for the detection of TLR4 mRNA and protein in the retinas.The apoptosis of RGCs was evaluated using TUNEL staining.The use and care of experimental animals followed theGuide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals of NIH.This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.Results The expression of TLR4 in rat retinas presented with green fluorescence mainly in the inner layer of retinas.The fluorescence was enhanced in the model 3 days group and the model 7 days group compared with the corresponding control groups.The relative expressing values of TLR4 mRNA in the retinas were 2.92±0.06and 3.92±0.12 in the model 3 days and 7 days groups,respectively,which were significantly higher than 2.87±0.12and 3.44±0.17 in the control 3 days and 7 days group (t3d =-12.888,P＜0.001 ;t7d =-4.669,P=0.010).In the model 3 days group and model 7 days group,the grey values of TLR4 protein were 1.14±0.05 and 1.49±0.03,and those in the control 3 days and 7 days groups were 0.99 ± 0.09 and 1.38 ± 0.07,showing significant differences between them(t3d =-11.324,P＜0.001 ;t7d =-5.638,P=0.005).Apoptotic RGCs were obviously increased in the optic nerve damage group in comparison with the control group.Conclusions The TLR4 is over-expressed in the inner layer of retina after optic nerve crush,which suggestes that TLR4 is probably involved in the loss of RGCs after optic nerve crush.

Objective:To investigate the expression of TIP30 and its relationship with clinico-pathological characteristics in patients with extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC).Methods:The expression of TIP30 in 78 cases of ECC tissues and 78 cases of para-cancerous tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry.Results:The positive expression rate of TIP30 was 43.59％ and 75.64％ in ECC tissues and para-cancerous tissues,respectively.Differences were statistically significant (P＜ 0.05).The expression levels of TIP30 were not correlated with age,gender,degree of differentiation and tumor size(P＞0.05),but correlated with lymph node metastasis,distant metastasis and TNM staging(P＜ 0.05).The median overall survival of 78 ECC cases was 14.8 months,and it of TIP30 positive expression cases was 20.3 months,statistically higher than 11.5 months in TIP30 negative expression cases(P＜ 0.01).Conclusion:The downregulation of TIP30 is closely correlated with the development,metastasis and prognosis of ECC.TIP30 may be used as a molecular marker to identify and predict the progression,metastasis and prognosis of ECC.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effective method of preventing cubitus varus deformity in nonoperative treatment of humeral supracondylar fracture in children.

METHODSFrom May 1992 to December 2013,319 patients with hemeral supracondylar fracture in children were treated with manual reduction and external plaster fixation in extension position. There were 253 males and 66 females, aged from 15 months to 13 years old with an average of 6.7 years. Among the patients with humeral supracondylar fracture, extension type was in 284 cases and inflexion type was in 35 cases; 167 cases on the left and 152 cases on the right. Injury to treatment time was 1 hour to 7 days with a mean of 1.8 days. No included nerve injury and operative case in the patients.

RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 3 months to 14 years with an average of 37.3 months. All fractures obtained bone healing and healed time was 6 to 8 weeks with an average of 6.9 weeks. No complications of serious cubitus varus deformity,vascular nerve injury or volkmann contracture were found. In 183 cases, the carrying angle was consistent with itself contralateral,ranged from 5° to 15°; in 105 cases, the carrying angle of uninjuryed side was decreased. During the reset, the carrying angle of 26 patients with ulnar deviation angle was for -5° to 0°; and 5 patients with radial deviation angle was for 15° to 18°, basically does not affect the appearance. The activities of all elbow joint were normal.

CONCLUSIONExternal plaster fixation in extension position has some value to preventing cubitus varus deformity in nonoperative treatment of humeral supracondylar fracture in children and hope that more scholars to do further study.

Objective To investigate prevalence of erectile dysfunction(ED)in type 2 diabetic male patients and to analyze its related factors.Methods A total of 904 married male patients with type 2 diabetes were involved in this study and they were interviewed with anonymous questionnaire.An international index of erectile function-5(IIEF-5)was used to determine the severity of ED by self-rating score in age,duration of diabetes,serum level of glycosylated hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c),history of alcohol drinking and smoking,blood pressure and anti-hypertensive medication in diabetic ED patients.Relationship between relevant factors and diabetic ED was analyzed.Results ED was diagnosed in 612 diabetics with prevalence of 67.7 percent(612/904)according to their total scores of IIEF-5.Logistic regression analysis showed that increase in duration of diabetes by five years,age by 10 years,serum level of HbAI c by 2%, systolic blood pressure by 30 mm Hg(1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa),positive history of smoking and alcohol drinking were all independently associated with prevalence of diabetic ED,with OR of 1.96,1.25,2.32, 1.12,1.67(P

Objective To investigate the methods of rectifying the excessive width of fold line and conglutination of the upper eyelid following blepharoplasty. Methods The width of double eyelid was redesigned, ranging from 6 mm to 8 mm. Then the scar of upper eyelid was excised about 1 mm to 2 mm, and the orbital septum fat flap, orbicularis oculi flap, infraorbicularis oculi fat flap and injection of lipochondria were utilized to fill the depression of upper eyelid. Results In our series, there were 20 eyelids of 16 cases receiving rectification. Orbital septum fat flap was used to correct 2 eye-lids, orbicularis oculi flap 4 eyelids, infraorbicularis oculi fat flap 10 eyelids and injection of lipochon-dria 4 cases. Among 12 eases of following-up, 10 of them were satisfied with the postoperative effects. The results were acceptable in other 2 cases. Conclusion It is a good approach to correct the excessive width of fold line and conglutination of the upper eyelid with local flaps, including the orbital septum fat flap, orbicularis oculi flap, infraorbicularis oculi fat flap and injection of lipochondria.

Objective:To explore the biological function of miR-132 in ovarian cancer and the target. Methods: 22 cases ovarian cancer tissue and non-tumor tissue adjacent were collected,the expression of miR-132 in tumor tissue and non-tumor tissue, normal ovarian epithelial cells and ovarian cancer cell were detected by RT-PCR. The normal ovarian epithelial cells which the expression of miR-132 maximum or minimum were chosen, and they were divided into two groups, respectively with transfection of negative control plasmid ( NC) and miR-132 mimic plasmid. The expression of miR-132 after transfection was detected by RT-PCR,the cell proliferation and cell apoptosis were detected by CCK-8 method and flow cytometry instrument respectively,the expression of Ezrin protein was detected by Western blot. Results:The expression of miR-132 in tumor tissue was significantly lower than the tumor tissue adjacent,the expression of miR-132 in ovarian cancer cell lines was significantly lower than normal ovarian epithelial cells, the differences were statistically significant (P<0. 05). The SKOV3 cell lines was chosed for gene transfection,compared with NC group, transfection with miR-132 mimic plasmid could significantly reduce cell proliferation, increase cell apoptosis, the difference had statistical significance ( P<0. 05 ) . Western blot results showed that up-regulation miR-132 significantly increased the Ezrin protein expression in ovarian cancer SKOV3 cells ( P<0. 05 ) . Conclusion: In ovarian cancer, miR-132;inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of ovarian cancer via Ezrin,it may be a tumor suppressor gene.

Objective To explore the methods and effects of improving facial appearance on volume defect and aging,and recovery of aesthetic looks by autologous fat granules graft.Methods We designed the filling areas according to gender,age,individual face characteristics and desire of the case before operation.By liposuction technology with low pressure from the trunk,fats were taken with cleaning and purifying.Then pure fats were injected to the marked areas of the face by multi-level and multi-tunnel injection.It was able to supply the facial volume for lost soft tissue,to improve the aging appearance and to achieve smooth facial contour.Results All cases were followed-up for 3 months to 2 years,facial appearances were satisfied or improved,without fat liquefaction,infection,scleroma and other complications.Only a few cases needed complementary transplantation.The overall results were satisfactory.Conclusions Autologous fat granules graft is a safe and effective facial soft tissue filling technology.It can effectively improve facial aging appearance,restore natural,young and beautiful looks,and be worth for clinical application.

Forty-eight men with normal glucose tolerance were divided into fatty liver disease ( NAFLD, n =23 ) and non-NAFLD (n =25 ) groups. The blood glucose excursion was evaluated by continuous glucose monitoring system. The results showed that the mean amplitude of glucose excursion[MAGE, (2. 17± 1.13 vs 1.45±0. 42 )mmol/L]and standard deviation of blood glucose[SDBG, (0. 88 ±0. 45 vs 0. 61 ±0. 21 ) mmol/L]were significantly higher in NAFLD group than in non-NAFLD group( both P＜0. 05 ). MAGE and SDBG were positively correlated with body mass index, waist circumference, and the increased value of plasma glucose 0. 5 h after glucose loading( △G30,all P＜0. 05 ). In multiple regression analysis, △G30, waist circumference, and age were significant independent predictors for MAGE( P＜0. 05 or P＜0. 01 ). △G30 and waist circumference were significant independent predictors for SDBG( P＜0. 05 or P＜0. 01 ).
