According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the basic sciences to support the human health are chemistry, physics and informatics. Chemistry is the base of pharmacy. Physics is the base of medical instruments and equipments (MIE). The diagnosis and therapy of diseases are relying on informatics. Therefore, as the fusion results of physics and medicine, medical physics is the creative source science of MIE. Among all diagnosis tools, medical imaging devices are the fastest-developed and the most-complicated MIE since Roentgen discovered X-ray which was quickly used in medical diagnosis in 1895. Among all treatment tools, the radiotherapeutical devices are the most-widely used and the most effective MIE for tumor treatments since Mrs. Courier found the nature radiation isotope Radium at the end of 19th century and began to use it in tumor therapy. Although the research and development (R&D) of so-complicated MIE need many subjects of science and engineering, the kernel science is medical physics. With the results of more than 50 years' development in developed countries, medical physics has defined its own field, which is the medical imaging physics and the radiotherapeutical physics. But, the definition has been expanded to be wider and wider. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the establishment of Medical Physics in China. In order to develop medical physics in china, the bases of R&D and clinical practice should be also built.

In order to increase the SNR of the prostate image, we have designed a RF endorectal coil. Its properties have been evaluated using a network analyzer. Moreover the images got with a special phantom show that the coil has much higher SNR at the region of interest (ROI).

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the change of peripheral Th1/Th2 cells in patients with CAP/CPPS and its significance in various clinical types of CAP/CPPS.
METHODSInterferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) secreted by CD3+ CD8(-)T cells were detected by flow cytometry in 35 patients with CAP/CPPS and 12 healthy volunteers, and significance of Th1/Th2 cells ratio in the etiology of CAP/CPPS was analyzed.
RESULTSCompared with control group, peripheral Th1 cells were significantly increased in patients with IIIA and III B CAP/CPPS, the Th1/Th2 cell ratio was apparently increased (P <0.05), while Th2 cells was not different from that in the control(P>0.05 ); Th1, Th2 cells and Th1/Th2 in patients with IIIA CPPS were not statistically different from those in III B CPPS respectively (P > 0.05) .
CONCLUSIONThere is a Th1/Th2 imbalance in CAP/CPPS patients with an increase of Th1 type cytokines. Th1 cell may play an important role in the pathogenesis of CAP/CPPS.

OBJECTIVETo determine the level of uric acid (UA) in the expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) of chronic prostatitis patients and explore its clinical significance.
METHODSA total of 91 patients with chronic prostatitis diagnosed by NIH standard were divided into a III A (n = 48) and a III B (n = 43) group, and healthy volunteers were selected as the control. The scores on the NIH-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (CPSI) and the WBC count, pH value and UA level in EPS were evaluated for all the three groups.
RESULTSThe EPS UA concentration was (257.02 +/- 144.84) micromol/L in Group III B, significantly higher than in Group III A, (159. 73 +/- 121.49) micromol/L, (P < 0.01), and the control, (78.55 +/- 44.53) micromol/L, (P < 0.01). The level of EPS UA was correlated negatively with pH value (r = -0.398, P = 0.000), but positively with CPSI-P, CPSI-U and CPSI-T (r = 0.436, 0.316 and 0.403, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONBackflow of urine into prostatic ducts might cause chemical inflammation reaction by increasing UA concentration. There is a close relationship between the UA level in EPS and chronic prostatitis symptoms. Determination of the UA level in EPS is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic prostatitis.
