As a kind of new technology, ethical issues are inevitable in medical and non-medical gene en-hancement application. It is unrealistic to unilaterally support or object to the research and application of medical and non -medical gene enhancement. Based on standardizing the ethical principle of gene enhancement tech-niques, we should build management measures of the research, development and application that adapted to ethi-cal, social and legal standards, so that we can draw on the advantages and avoid the disadvantages, and use gene enhancement reasonably and bring benefits to mankind and society.

Abstract: Objective　This article summarizes the clinical characteristics and diagnosis and treatment experience of an elderly patient infected with Omicron variant BA.5.1.3 of COVID-19 in Hainan Province. Methods　The clinical data and treatment of an elderly patient infected with Omicron variant BA.5.1.3 of COVID-19 admitted to Haikou designated hospital on August 15, 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Results　A 107-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with "fever and cough for 1 day". Two of her family members have infected with COVID-19. The patient initially developed fever, accompanied by cough, expectoration, a little white sticky sputum, accompanied by sore throat, muscle pain, fatigue. Nucleic acid test was positive in throat swab, indicating Omicron variant BA.5.1.3 infection. The patient was diagnosed as mild COVID-19 and treated with antiviral therapy, Chinese medicine conditioning, anticoagulation, electrolyte disorder regulation and symptomatic treatment for 9 days. The patient's clinical symptoms were relieved, and she was cured and discharged after two negative nucleic acid tests. One week later, the patient recovered well. Conclusions　Omicron variant BA.5.1.3 is highly infectious, and comprehensive treatment such as antiviral treatment and traditional Chinese medicine treatment has achieved good efficacy. For elderly patients, attention should be paid to maintaining the stability of organ function and internal environment, which is helpful to improve the prognosis of patients.

The present paper is to evaluate the scientific research level and development trends of biomedical engineering in China using metrology analysis on Chinese biomedical engineering scientific literatures. Pubmed is used to search the biomedical engineering publications in recent 5 years which are indexed by Science Citation Index, and the number and cited times of these publications and the impact factor of the journals are analyzed. The results show that comparing with the world, although the number of the publication in China has increased in recent 5 years, there is still much room for improvement. Among Chinese mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan, Chinese mainland maintains the obvious advantage in this subject, but Hongkong has the highest average cited number. Shanghai and Beijing have better research ability than other areas in Chinese mainland.

Objective:To study the relationship between gingival thickness(GT)and the underlying alveolar bone thickness(BT)in maxillary anterior region and the distance from cemento-enamel junction(CEJ)to alveolar crest.Methods:30 young volunteers with healthy gingiva were included.GT was measured at 2mm below the CEJ,buccal BT were measured at 3 locations:2,4 and 6 mm below the alveolar crest respectively,the distance from CEJ to alveolar crest were measured by CBCT and clinical direct measure respectively. Results:The correlation coefficient (r)values between GT and BT at 2,4 and 6 mm below alveolar crest were 0.493,0.383 and 0.342 (P <0.001 )respectively,the r value between GT and the distance from CEJ to alveolar crest was -0.21 3(P <0.01 ).No statistically significant difference was observed between CBCT and clinical measurements(t =-0.521 ,P =0.603).Conclusion:There is positive correlation between GT and BT at 2,4 and 6 mm below alveolar crest and negative relation between GT and the distance from CEJ to alveolar crest.

Objective To investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and the chronic kidnev disease in both Han and Uyguer populations.Methods 1027 cases were enrolled during 2006-3 to 2007-1 from the First Affiliated Hospital,Xiniiang University.According to the identification of chronic kidnev disease(CKD)and minor renal dysfunction,these patients were divided into different groups. The correlation between the components of metabolic syndrome and CKD was examined.T test,Chi-square test and logistic regression were used.Results (1)CKD and mild CKD prevalence were 37.4%and 24.0% in all the cases.(2)The Ievel of age,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,trigly-ceride,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.uric acid in Han people were higher than those among Uyguer people while body mass index.systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were lower than those Uyguer people. (3)There were no significant differences found between Han and Uyguer people in different metabolic components.(4)In the group which had only one metabolic component disjunction,the diabetic group accounted for big proportion while in those patients with two or more metabolic component dislunction,hypertension and obesity were significantly high in Han people but diabetes plus obesity were seen in Uyguer people.(5)Diabetes,obesity,metabolic components,uric acid were independent factors associated with CKD and mild CKD.Conclusion There were close connection between metabolic syndrome and CKD found in Xinjiang area.

Objective To evaluate the immunogenicity and immunoprotective effect of heat shock protein 60 kDa (SjHSP60) of Schistosoma japonicum in mice after immunization and challenge infection, and explore the mechanism. Methods B cell/an?tibody?related databases and analysis tools were used to predict B?cell epitopes of SjHSP60. The mice were immunized with the recombinant SjHSP60 and challenged with S. japonicum cercariae. SjHSP60?specific antibodies in serum were detected by ELI?SA. The level of splenocyte proliferation was determined by 3H?TdR incorporation. Ex vivo suppression assay was performed to in?vestigate the effects of CD4 +CD25 + regulatory T cells (Tregs) induced by SjHSP60. Results SjHSP60 possessed multiple pre?dominant regions of B?cell epitopes. SjHSP60 induced a significant increase in both SjHSP60?specific IgG levels (P < 0.01) and splenocyte proliferation (P < 0.01) with a higher IFN?γ production (P < 0.01). However, the immunization with SjHSP60 resulted no significant reduction in adult worms (P > 0.05) and liver?accumulated eggs (P > 0.05) in S. japonicum?infected mice. Ex vivo assay showed that CD4+CD25+ Tregs from SjHSP60?immunized mice enhanced immunosuppressive activity. Conclusion SjH?SP60 has a dual role in host immune system, being involved in the induction of dominant humoral and cellular immune responses as well as in the enhancement of immunosuppression.

BACKGROUND:Dendritic cel s can regulate the immunological reaction in the intestinal tract, this functional deficit may induce inflammatory bowel disease. Tol-like receptor-4/nuclear factor-κB pathway is highly involved in this reaction. OBJECTIVE:To establish experimental colitis model in rats, to observe effects of resina draconis on dendritic cel s and Tol-like receptor-4/nuclear factor-κB expression in rats with experimental colitis, and to explore its action mechanism. METHODS:A total of 44 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n=11):blank control group, model group, resina draconis group, 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment group. With the exception of blank control group, 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid-induced ulcerative colitis models were established in the model group, resina draconis group and 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment group. After the models were successful y established, the rats in the resina draconis and 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment groups were intragastrical y treated with resina draconis [(0.75 g(kg·d)] and 5-aminosalicylic acid [100 mg(kg·d)] respectively for 10 days. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Disease activity index, macroscopic colonic damage score and histopathological score were significantly decreased in the resina draconis group compared with the model group (P<0.05). Symptoms and tissue damages were obviously lessened in the 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment and resina draconis groups compared with the model group. Expression rates of CD80 and CD86, as wel as expression levels of Tol-like receptor-4 and nuclear factor-κB were significantly higher in the model group compared with the blank control group, resina draconis group and 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Tol-like receptor-4 and nuclear factor-κB expression was significantly lower in the resina draconis group than that in the 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment group. Experimental findings indicate that, resina draconis can partial y relieve experimental colitis symptoms in rats and effectively inhibit the activation of dendritic cel s in the mesenteric lymph node. Resina draconis can relieve enteric inflammatory reaction by suppressing the expression of Tol-like receptor-4 and nuclear factor-κB in rats.

Background The popularization and promotion of gene diagnosis technology makes it possible to detect deafness genes for children with congenital hearing impairment,and the proportion of gap junction protein beta 2 (GJB2) gene mutations in cochlear implant patients is 26.5％ We did follow-up evaluation on auditory rehabilitation effect for all 31 deaf children with GJB2 gene mutation after cochlear implantation to provide a reference for such patients.Methods Application of “the genetic deafness gene chip detection kit” and “gene complete sequence analysis” were applied to conduct detection on common genetic deafness gene mutation hotspots of the hearing impaired children with cochlear implantation.To conduct auditory rehabilitation effect evaluation on all 31 cases of patients with GJB2 genetic deafness after 3,6 and 12 months of the operation respectively.The single factor repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to analysis whether there were significant difference among the results of initial consonant of a Chinese syllable recognition at 3 different stages after the operation,the results of vowel of a Chinese syllable recognition at 3 different stages after the operation,and the results of two-syllable recognition at 3 different stages after the operation.Results The 235delC is the high-incidence mutational site in 31 cases of patients with GJB2 genetic deafness,and the total detection rate is up to 90.3％ (28/31).There were significant differences in the initial consonant and the vowel of a Chinese syllable recognition rate,and the two-syllable recognition rates at 3,6,and 12 months after the operation (P＜0.01).Conclusion Cochlear implantation is a safe and effective measure for auditory reconstruction,enabling patients with GJB2 hereditary severe sensorineural deafness to achieve auditory speech recognition effectively.

OBJECTIVETo analyze and find factors affecting the height of adjacent gingival papilla of maxillary central incisor single implant in human in order to promote the esthetic result of dental implants.

METHODSSixteen maxillary central incisor single implants of 16 patients and 30 sites of adjacent tissues and prosthesis were evaluated. Data on the height of adjacent gingival papilla of dental implant and relative factors were obtained from clinical parameters, photographs, research models, and X radiographs.

RESULTSThe mean and standard deviation of adjacent gingival papilla height of maxillary central incisor single implant were (4.01 +/- 1.85) mm. Statistical analysis revealed that factors affecting the height of adjacent gingival papilla of implant were as following from strong to weak: vertical distance between contact point and gingival margin, vertical distance between proximal bone level of natural tooth and implant abutment, vertical distance between proximal bone level of natural tooth and contact point, proximal protruding degree of crown, horizontal distance between abutment and root, length ratio of the crown and fixture, vertical distance between proximal bone level of implant and abutment, lip-side protruding degree of crown, probing depth.

CONCLUSIONSMultiple factors affected the height of adjacent gingival papilla of maxillary central incisor single implant in human.

Objective To investigate and compare the different effects of soluble adult wornl antigen(SWA)and soluble egg antigen(SEA)of Schistosoma japonicum on the apoptosis and cell-cycle of routine CD4~+T cells.Methods Purified CD4~+T ceUs from normal C57BL/6 mice were cultured with CFSE labeled antigen presenting clls in the presence of different stimuli for 36 h.Flow cytometry(FCM)was used to detect the apoptosis of CD4~+T cells by fluorescence conjugated caspase-3 antibodie staining.The flow cytometry was used to analyze the cell-cycle of CD4~+T cells cultured as described above for 96 h by propidium iodide staining.Results Compared with the apoptosis percentage of CD4~+T cells[(1.24±0.29)%]in the SEA stimulated group,that in the SWA stimulated group[(1.52±0.38)%]did not show statistically significant difference(P>0.05).Compared with the cell percentages in G1 phase[(78.91±2.98)%],S phase[(7.39±0.85)%]and G2/M phase[(10.69±1.05)%] in the SWA stimulated group,that of the G1 phase[(59.42±1.32)%]was significantly lower,but those in the S phase[(21.07±O.88)%] and G2/M phase[(18.88±1.21)%]were significantly increased in the SEA stimulated group(P<0.01).Conclusions There is no statistically significant difference between the apoptosis levels of CD4~+T ceHs stimulated by SWA and SEA.However,SEA significantly promotes the progression of the cell-cycle of CD4~+T cells compared with SWA.
