PURPOSE: This study is to identify the factors that affect middle-aged workers' health promoting behaviors. METHODS: 214 middle-aged workers participated in surveys, and the data were collected from August to September 2012 and analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with PASW 18.0 program. RESULTS: It was found that among the factors, the degree of job stress (t=7.69, p<.001) and depression (t=6.23, p<.001) were significantly high for type D individuals, while non type D showed meaningful degree of self-related health status (t=-3.66, p<.001) and health promoting behaviors (t=-4.71, p<.001). The notable variable that affected the health promoting behaviors of the middle-aged workers was depression for both type D (beta=-.357, p= .029) and non type D (beta=-.325, p<.001) individuals, and this variable accounted for 24.1% and 18.2% respectively. CONCLUSION: The study revealed that the middle-aged workers showed high degree of job stress and depression that influenced on their health promoting behaviors. Thus, they are recommended to receive health management programs that offer treatment through consulting considering their individual personalities.

BACKGROUND: The stratum corneum presents a significant barrier to transdermal drug delivery. Approaches to improve percutaneous absorption of drugs have included iontophoresis and skin penetration enhancers. Oleic acid has been studied as a skin penetration enhancer for drugs, primarily via its action mainly on the stratum corneum lipid structure. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the interaction between oleic acid and stratum corneum lipids in vivo. METHODS: Male hairless mice were treated topically with oleic acid. Barrier function was assessed by transepidermal water loss measurement and ultrastructural observation with ruthenium tetroxide (RuO₄) staining. RESULTS: Oleic acid in propylene glycol had a profound effect on epidermal barrier function and was found to be concentration dependent. Moreover, ultrastructural examination with RuO4 post-fixation demonstrated that there were marked alterations in the stratum corneum lipid structure. CONCLUSION: This study provides direct evidence that oleic acid increases the epidermal permeability through a mechanism involving the stratum corneum lipid membrane perturbation via the lacunae formation within the stratum corneum.

The arthrodesis of the hip is the only certain method for eliminating pain and providing stability in young and middle aged adults. The first used arthrodesis in old congenital dislocation was reported by Heusner, Lampugnani, and Alert as early as 1885 according to Nove-Josserand. The various papers published on this operation appear to be concerned mainly with surgical methods and the frequency of bone healing, rather than with loss of function and its causes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate function of the arthrodesed hip especially the relationship between position of the hip and its daily use. The author studied arthrodesis of the hip clinically in 89 cases of arthrodesed patients, admitted to the Orthopedic Department of Severance Hospital during the 14 years from June 1957 until May 1970. The auther also studied 40 cases which confirmed sound bony ankylosis of the hip by X-ray examination. The follow-up included a careful inquiry into the patients ability to use the fixed hip in various functions of daily life. The results are as follows. 1. The average age of the patients at the time of operation was 16.9 years and tuberculosis of the hip was the most common cause 83(93%) of arthrodesis. 2. The most common type of operation in this series was intraarticular arthrodesis 67(75.3%), and the fusion rate was relatively good in intra & extraarticular arthrodesis 20(85.5%). 3. The average length of follow-up was 3.9 years. The average position of the arthrodesed hip was 37.7 degrees of flexion, 9.1 degrees of abduction and neutral rotation. Actual shortening of the leg averaged 3.8cm. 4. The gait was poor in the group which had 5cm shortening of the leg and was in 43 degrees of flexion for the arthrodesed hip. 5. The ability to sit and defecate in the ordinary toilet was satisfactory when there was 39 degrees of flexion or more for the arhrodesed hip. 6. 10 patients (25%) had back pain and 12 patients (30%) had mild scoliosis. Average Ferguson angle was 47.8 degrees and the Line of Weight Thrust showed over 40 degrees. 7. The ideal hip position of arthrodiesis in Koreans was assumed to be under 40 degrees of flexion, some degrees of abduction and no rotation.

Uniform mixing of liquid substances is difficult to attain. Recently, mixtures of fat and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) have been used extensively in autologous fat transfer. Although various methods have been utilized to mix the fat and PRP involved in this procedure, these methods still carry disadvantages in the time taken and the potential for cell damage, and it is questionable whether effective mixing can occur using these techniques. To facilitate mixing that is as uniform as possible, the authors of this study invented a special cannula. Use of the conventional luer-lock-to-luer-lock connector method has been found to cause cell damage and makes it difficult to achieve uniform mixing, while random injection-type mixing has been shown to have limited accuracy and effectiveness. We expect that the newly designed cannula will solve the problem detailed above.
