OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence and functional impairment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and premenstrual syndrome(PMS) in young women. METHODS: A total of 1063 female college students were recruited from two urban areas(Seoul and Suwon) of Korea. Questionnaires for sociodemographic data and risk factors of PMDD, attitude about menstruation, and the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool(PSST) were applied. RESULTS: The prevalence of severe moderate to severe PMS and PMDD were 16.9% and 11.7%, respectively. There were differences in the alcohol and coffee consumption, severity of menstrual cramp, and family history of PMS among the moderate to severe PMS, PMDD, and no/mild PMS groups. Although some participants did not fulfill diagnostic criteria for PMDD, they showed significant functional impairment. Participants with negative attitude about menstruation reported premenstrual symptoms more frequently than those with positive or ambivalent attitude about menstruation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that PMS and PMDD were prevalent and associated with functional impairment in young females. Some participants reported significant functional impairments although they did not meet the full DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for PMDD. Negative attitude about menstruation was associated with more premenstrual symptoms experiences.

Fibrous pseudotumor of the testicular tunics is a rare benign fibrous proliferative disorder, but it is the second most common mass-forining lesion of the testicular tunics. While these lesions are not strict neoplasms, they do form nodules and are often mistaken for neoplasms. Herein, we report 2 cases of fibrous pseudotumor with characteristic histologic findings. Both cases had been incidentally found as slow growing scrotal masses and underwent excision. There were several nodules along the testicular tunics which had bulging whitish-gray cut surface with focal myxoid change and a whorling appearance. These two cases showed the histologic spectrum seen in fibrous pseudotumor from a haphazard arrangement of fibroblastic type cells with intervening collagen and focal lymphocytic infiltrates in case 1, to a densely collagenized lesion in case 2.

Major depressive disorder with psychotic features is fairly common but difficult to be diagnosed and managed. The patients with psychotic depression have psychomotor impairments, guilt, suicidal ideation or attempt, and neuropsychological impairments. Compared with non-psychotically depressed patients, these patients exhibit more frequent relapses and recurrences and have increased use of medical services, greater disability, more social and occupational impairments, and a poorer clinical course. They demonstrate distinct biological abnormalities in various studies. Several studies support a relationship between bipolar affective disorder and psychotic depression. The combination of an antidepressant and an antipsychotic or electroconvulsive therapy may be most efficacious treatments for psychotic depression. The combination of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and an atypical antipsychotic may have particular relevance for the treatment of psychotic depression because of the potential for decreased risk of side effects, as well as possible antidepressant properties of an atypical antipsychotic itself. Additionally, glucocorticoid antagonist may have as good or better efficacy for the disorder. This article focused on recognizing the characteristics of psychotic depression, favorable treatment options, and new treatments under investigation.
