Korean Journal of Dermatology 1994;32(2):347-351
We describe a patient with overlap syndrome in whom systemic lupus erythematosus and scleroderma were combined. The patient expired due to severe central nervous system involvernent and pneumonia. Pertinent neuropsychiatric signs of the patient included generalied seizure, impairment of recent, memory, dysarthria, mental deterioration, Balints syndrome, right sided hemiparesis and right sided central type facial weakness. Hrain MRI and cerebral angiogram slowed cerebral vasculopathy. We suggest that a long-term follow-up is necessary for the confirmation of ciagnosis of a connective tissue disease, because the evolution, transition and overlapping features among the group of connective tissue diseases may commonly occur over time.

5.Composite Carcinoma-Carcinoid Tumor of Stomach: Report of a case.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1985;19(4):449-452
The concurrence of typical carcinoid admixed with adenocarcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a well known but unusual phenomenom that has been reported in the esophagus, stomach, gall bladder, colon and appendix. The amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) concept included the idea that neuroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract were dervied from the neural crest by a process of migration during embryogenesis. However the intimate admixture of cells which have morphologic and immunocytochemical properties of both carcinoid tumors and adenocarcinoma suggests that these tumors are derived from a multipotential stem cell showing bidirectional differentiation rather than from unrelated cell lines. The term composite carcinoma-carcinoid tumor is therefore an appropriate designation for these neoplasms. We report a case of composite carcinoma-carcinoid tumor of the stomach in a 38 year-old female with brief review of literature.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1999;26(6):1151-1159
This retrospective study comprised patiens with facial bone fractures in various accidents and treated in the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pildong hospital, Chung Ang university during the past 5 years from January 1994 to December 1998. The medical records of these patients (fractures) were reviewed and analysed in order to gain insight into a clinical pattern and understnad the therapeutic modalities. The following results were obtained: 1. The monthly incidence was highest in August and most common accident time was between 6:00 p.m and midnight. 2. The mean age of patients was 28.3 years, and age range was 3 to 69 years. The most prevalent age group was the third decade of life (42.9%). Males predominated more than female in the ratio of 4.1:1. 3. The most common etiology was assault (29.6%) followed by traffic accidents (28.5%), fall (23.1%), sports (7.9%). 4. 369 facial fractures in 277 patients were classifed. The most common sites were nasal bone, followed by zygoma, mandible, maxilla, orbit. 5. Associated soft tissue injuries were combined in 168 patients (60.6%), and fractures other than facial bone were developed in 61 patients (22%). 6. Treatment of facial bone fracture consisted of open reduction (42.6%), closed reduction (40.1%), and conservative treatment (17.3%). 7. The complication rate was 11.6% and the most common complication was the eye problem.

Annals of Dermatology 2000;12(4):238-242
BACKGROUND: Gamma linoleic acid (GLA, Epogam) is considered a safe and effective modality in the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) in which impaired function of the enzyme, delta-6-desaturase, has been reported to result in reduced levels of GLA, desaturated fatty acids. OBJECTIVE: We performed this study to observe the changes of skin surface conditions measured objectively by bioengineering methods in relation to clinical improvement after treatment with GLA (Epogam®) in children with AD. METHODS: Thirty-four children with AD were treated with GLA (Epogam®) and evaluated with clinical parameters. The changes of skin surface conditions were monitored by non-invasive experimental instruments. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and gradual improvements in clinical severity after 12 weeks of GLA (Epogam®) treatment. The change of skin surface pH was statistically significant on the antecubital fossa and abdomen except the popliteal fossa. The other parameters including skin surface hydration and skin surface lipid did not show consistent changes. CONCLUSION: Clinical improvement of AD with GLA (Epogam) seemed to be achieved by the reduction of TEWL.

The Journal of the Korean Bone and Joint Tumor Society 2010;16(1):37-41
A hemangioma occurred in the bony epiphysis is extremly rare. A 5-year-old boy visited to our hospital with pain and flexion contracture on the right knee. MRI showed some lesions scattered in the epiphysis of the distal femur and the proximal tibia. Biopsy specimen from the distal femoral epiphysis revealed pathologic findings compatible with hemangioma. On 8 years follow-up, the lesion in the distal femoral epiphysis had been cured, and those in the proximal tibial epiphysis were spontaneously disappeared without surgery. The scanogram shows no leg length discrepancy and angular deformity. We reports a rare case of hemangioma occurred in the bony epiphysis with the results of 8 year follow-up with the review of literatures.

10.Retrovirus-Mediated Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase Gene Therapy for the Prevention of Stenosis in Rat Carotid Artery Injury Model.

Korean Circulation Journal 1998;28(6):977-989
BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSVtk) phosphorylates the prodrug ganciclovir to a nucleoside analog that inhibits DNA synthesis, causing cell death. Neighbouring nontransfected cells may be affected through a 'bystander effect', thereby amplifying the antiproliferative actions. This study was carried out to determine whether retrovirus-mediated HSVtk gene therapy could reduce intimal hyperplasia and prevent stenosis following balloon injury of the rat carotid artery. METHODS: A replication-defective recombinant retroviral vector containing HSVtk cDNA (LtkSN) was constructed. Cultured primary rat smooth muscle cells (SMCs) infected with this vector (SMC/LtkSN) were transplanted to the balloon injured rat right carotid artery. One week after transplantation, HSVtk gene therapy group was administered a 2-week treatment of ganciclovir (30 mg/kg/d). Three weeks after balloon injury and SMC/LtkSN transplantation, carotid arteriography was performed and carotid arteries were perfusion-fixed for histologic examination. RESULTS: Carotid arteriographic evaluation comparing with the uninjured left carotid artery showed that the mean luminal diameter of HSVtk gene therapy group (n=5, 85+/-3%) was significantly larger than that of balloon injury only group (n=5, 65+/-5%). The neointimal mass of HSVtk gene therapy group was less than that of balloon injury only group. SMC/LtkSN transplantation without ganciclovir treatment group (n=3) showed asymmetric intimal proliferation probably because of gravitational pooling of seeding. There were inflammatory cell infiltrations at the gravity dependent portion of HSVtk gene therapy group. CONCLUSION: Retrovirus-mediated HSVtk gene therapy following balloon injury of the rat carotid artery reduced neointimal expansion and arteriographic stenosis.
