1.Descriptive Reports on Some Soil-Inhabiting Fungi in Korea.

During the study of microbial structures in root-regions of tomato and red pepper from fields, various soil-inhabiting fungi were isolated with the dilution plate technique. Among them an ascomycete, Emericellopsis mirabilis and three hyphomycetes, Gliocladium solani, Humicola veronae and Verticillium chlamydosporium are presented for the first time in Korea along with Talaromyces trachyspermus, Chaetomium globosum and Doratomyces microsporus.

2.A Mycoparasitic Ascomycete Syspastospora parasitica on the Entomopathogenic Fungus Paecilomyces tenuipes Growing in Bombyx mori.

While studying Bombyx mori "Zipnuae" inoculated with an entomopathogenic fungus, Paecilomyces tenuipes, a mycoparasitic hymenoascomycete with a long neck was isolated from the silkworm rearing room. The fungus was identified as Syspastospora parasitica which has been recognized as a hyperparasite on various moniliaceous hyphomycetes. A descriptive illustration is presented in this study.

3.A Polyphialidic Hyphomycete Gonytrichum macrocladum New to Korea from the Arable Soil in Jinju-shi.

During the study of soil mycoflora in Jinju-shi in 1997, a dematiaceous hyphomycete, Gonytrichum macrocladum , was isolated using the soil dilute plating method. The isolate was recovered with very low frequencies and recorded for the first time in Korea. illustrated descriptions are presented for the isolate examined in the present study.

4.A Note on Nitschkia confertula.

A fungus that grew over bed-logs of shiitake (Lentinula edodes) and caused damage was isolated from mushroom-growing farms. The fungus produced extensive mat-like dark subiculum with ascomata in it and was identified as Nitschkia confertula. This is the first report in Korea and morphological characteristics are fully described.

5.Ceratocystis quercicola sp. nov. from Quercus variabilis in Korea

During a survey of putative fungal pathogens infecting oak trees in the Gangwon Province of the Republic of Korea, a fungus resembling a Ceratocystis sp. was repeatedly isolated from natural wounds on Quercus variabilis. Morphological comparisons and DNA sequence comparisons based on partial b-tubulin and TEF-1a gene regions showed that the fungus resided in a distinct lineage. This novel Ceratocystis species is described here as C. quercicola sp. nov. This is the first novel species of Ceratocystis to be reported from Korea. A pathogenicity test showed that it can cause lesions on inoculated trees but that it had a very low level of aggressiveness. The discovery of this fungus suggests that additional taxa residing inCeratocystis are likely to be discovered in Korea in the future.

7.A Case Report of Delayed Hemolytic Transfusion Caused by Anti-Fyb Antibody.

As a minor blood antigen, the Duffy blood group has 5 antigens which are Fya, Fyb, Fy3, Fy4 and Fy5. When the Duffy group is implicated in delayed transfusion reactions, one expects to find anti-Fya rather than Fyb. We experienced a case of delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction caused by anti-Fyb antibody. A 69 year-old woman was referred having had hematuria, fever, chill and jaundice 9 days after transfusion. The hemoglobin was 9.5mg/dl, reticulocyte count 1.4%, liver function test showed total bilirubin 10.8mg/dL, LDH 5,225IU/L, alkaline phosphatase 26IU/L. Indirect antiglobulin test was positive, while the direct one was negative. A delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction was suspected as patient's serum was reacted with panel cells for the antibody identification test and the anti-Fyb was finally identified. The patient recovered without specific treatment. There were no severe complication and sequele.It appears to be the first reported case of hemolytic transfusion reaction caused by anti-Fyb in Korea.

8.Suppression of Foxo3-Gatm by miR-132-3p Accelerates Cyst Formation by Up-Regulating ROS in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease

Accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is associated with the development of various diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying oxidative stress that lead to such diseases like autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) remain unclear. Here, we observed that oxidative stress markers were increased in Pkd1 f/f :HoxB7-Cre mice. Forkhead transcription factors of the O class (FOXOs) are known key regulators of the oxidative stress response, which have been observed with the expression of FoxO3a in an ADPKD mouse model in the present study. An integrated analysis of two datasets for differentially expressed miRNA, such as miRNA sequencing analysis of Pkd1 conditional knockout mice and microarray analysis of samples from ADPKD patients, showed that miR-132-3p was a key regulator of FOXO3a in ADPKD. miR-132-3p was significantly upregulated in ADPKD which directly targeted FOXO3 in both mouse and human cell lines. Interestingly, the mitochondrial gene Gatm was downregulated in ADPKD which led to a decreased inhibition of FOXO3. Overexpression of miR-132-3p coupled with knockdown of Foxo3 and Gatm increased ROS and accelerated cyst formation in 3D culture. This study reveals a novel mechanism involving miR-132-3p, Foxo3, and Gatm that is associated with the oxidative stress that occurs during cystogenesis in ADPKD.

The role that children play in the transmission of the omicron variant is unclear. Here we report an outbreak that started in young children attending various pediatric facilities, leading to extensive household transmission that affected 75 families with 88 confirmed case-patients in 3 weeks. Tailored social and public health measures directed towards children and pediatric facilities are warranted with the emergence of highly transmissible omicron variant to mitigate the impact of coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19).
