The objective of this study was to determine the clincotherapeutic effect of whole bee venom in hypogalactic sows postpartum. Sows after parturition were assigned to treated and nontreated control groups. In the treated group, 22 sows were bee acupunctured once a day for 3 consecutive days. Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) for bee acupuncture were about 15 days after metamorphosis. One live bee was used to sting the acupoints known as Yang-ming (ST-18, 1.5 cm lateral to the base of the last 2 pairs of teats) and Jiao-chao (GV-1, at the indentation between the base of tail and the anus). In the control group, 20 sows were intramuscularly injected with a standard dosage of penicillin G (400,000 IU/head) once a day for 3 consecutive days. At post-treatment, 85.0% of the drug-treated control and 90.9% of the bee venomtreated group recovered from hypogalactia syndrome. The advantages of apitherapy were that the patients did not have stress because they were not restrained for a long period. The result suggested that apitherapy using bee venom is an effective treatment for sows with hypogalactia syndrome postpartum.

The truncated E1192-283 and E2384-649 genes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) linked to the gene for glutathione 5-transferase (GST) were constructed and their expressions were analyzed. The GST-E1192-283 fusion gene overexpressed the fusion protein in E. coli as a soluble form, while the GST-E1192-383 plasmid did not express expected fusion protein. The purified GST-E1192-283 fusion protein was efficiently cleaved by thrombin. More than 90% pure, HCV E1192-283 protein was obtained by GST-agarose chromatography. The truncated GST-E2384-649 fusion gene expressed the fusion protein mainly as an insoluble form, whereas the GST-E2384-740 did not express the fusion protein. The truncated GST-E1 182-283 and GST-E2384-649 fusion proteins reacted specifically with an HCV patient serum. In addition, mice immunized with either the purified E1192-283 or GST-E2384-649 proteins generated specific antibodies to each antigen. The results suggested that hydrophobic carboxyl portions of the E1 and E2 proteins might affect expression levels as well as the solubility of each fusion protein in bacteria. Also, the truncated E1 protein with Tyr-192 to Ser-283 contained antigenic epitope(s) which could be specifically recognized by an HCV patient serum.

This study demonstrates that prophylactic effect of plaster and cataplasm contained ketoprofen in adjuvant arthritis therapy by X-ray. Adjuvant arthritis was induced by a single injection of Freund's complete adjuvant. Mature female Sprague-Dawley rats were designated to 3 groups such as nontreated control, plaster-treated (PT) and cataplasm-treated (CT), each of which was composed of ten animals. The PT and the CT groups showed reduced primary paw swelling, but secondary paw swelling was not affected. Bony changes were observed in all regions of the femur and tibia of the nonadjuvant-injected leg and the adjuvant-injected leg. The mean radiographic scores of the PT and the CT groups were significantly lower than those of the control group from day 0 to 7 of the experimental period (p<0.05, p<0.01). The CT rats showed reduced poly-arthritis development than the PT rats. Our results suggest that radiographic assessment of bony changes is more suitable for measuring changes in long bones such as femur or tibia than in vertebrae. The prophylactic effect of CT prominently suppressed edematous swelling and bony changes in arthritic limb compared with PT.

Occasionally, in obese infants or boys, the penis appears extremely short or absent because of fat deposits in the prepubic area. However, further inspection shows the penis to be of adequate length. A concealed penis is a congenital abnormality wherein the skin is unattached to the penile shaft. The penis itself is normally formed. The testes and scrotum are normally developed also. Its treatment is effected by weight reduction and surgery. Surgery is directed to fix the skin in the pubic area to the base of the penis. herein we report twelve cases of concealed penis with the literature review.

Supracondylar fractures of the humerus is the most common elbow fractures in children. The fractures so designated are in the supracondylar area of the humerus just proximal to the elbow, and do not directly involve the joint or the distal humeral epiphysis. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most difficult fractures to treat. And the catastrophic picture of Volkmann's ischemic contracture and nerve injuries associated with these fractures, as after successful reduction, the late complications of loss of elbow motion, the chage in carrying angle, myositis ossifgicans, and delayed ulnar nerve palsy still lie ahead. For the period of 4 years and 10 months from May 1979 to March 1985, 47 patients who had been treated for supracondylar fractures of the humerus at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, college of medicine, Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, are presented, The results obtained are as follows; 1. Supracondylar fractures of the humerus frequently occured between the ages of 4 and 9 years (70.2%) and the sex ratio was 2.1: 1 in male to female. 2. Of all fratures, 89.4% were the extension type and the left side was predominent in 55.3% than right. 3. According to the Holmberg clasification, Group 1 was 6 cases(12.8%), 10 cases(21.3%) in Group 2, 11 cases(23.4%) in Group 3, and 20 cases(42.5%) in Group 4. 4. Closed reduction with percutaneous pinning showed little changes in carrying angle. 5. Limitation of motion was most frequent complication after closed reduction with plaster cast immobilization. 6. By the modified Mitchell and Adams' criteria for grading results, excellent were obtained in 55.3 %, good in 44.7%, and zero in unsatisfactory. 7. In the neurovascular injuries associated with fractue, there were 4 neural injuries, and 2 vascular injuries. In 4 traumatic neuropathies, median nerve was involved most commonly and the were recovered spontaneously within 5 weeks. 8. Average time from injury to reduction was 1.6 day and delayed reduction or operation made worse the prognosis in most cases.

In general, satisfactory results can be obtained by nonoperative means in the management of proximal femoral shaft fracture in children. Howerver, it is sometimes difficult to maintain the fracture alignment by the nonoperative means because of different muscle pulls in the thigh. The proximal fragment tend to be displaced and roentgenograms are difficult to be taken during traction. These problems have led some authors to advocate open reduction and internal fixation which facilitate overall care. We report our experiences on nonoperative and.operative treatment for proximal femoral fracture at the Chon-ju Presbyterian Medical Center from February 1987 to January 1991. The results are as follows ; 1. There were 20 cases in male, 7 cases in female. Average age at injury was 6.9 years (range, 6 months to 12 years and 8 months). Traffic accident was the most common cause (70.3%). 2. Average immobillization time was 9.2 weeks (range, 6.0 weeks to 12.1 weeks) in the nonoperative treatment group(17 cases), while 8.1 weeks(range, 6.1 weeks to 11.4 weeks) in the operative treatment group (10 cases). 3. Average bony union time was 9.6 weeks (range, 6.3 weeks to 12.5 weeks) in the nonoperative treatment group(17. cases) and 11.2 weeks (range, 9.0 weeks to 13.4 weeks) in the operative treatment group (P < 0.05). 4. Fractures in the subtrochanteric region of the femur present more formidable problems in treatment than do other trochanteric fractures, because such severe stresses exit at the fracture site. Therefore, as a rule we prefer to treat subtrochanteric fractures by operative means if possible. Many internal fixation devices have been recommanded for use in subtrochanteric fractures and each of these devices have advantages in certain types of subtrochanteric fractures, and their selection should be based on the individual fracture anatomy. A total of 20 patients with fracture of the subtrochanteric region of the femur, who were treated by internal fixation with Judet plate between January 1982 and December 1988 have been reviewed. Our conclusions were as follows; 1. Average age was 38 years old and most common cause of injury was traffic accident. 2. Cast immobilization was done after Judet plate fixation. Partial weight bearing ambulation was enabled from POD 10 weeks and full weight bearing ambulation was enabled from POD 16 weeks. 3. 18 in 20 cases, primary bony union was happened and the mean duration of radiological bony union was 24 weeks. 4. 3 cases of complications, metal failure with refracture (2 cases) and screw loosening (1 case), were occured due to early weight bearing in the post operative course. 5. Judet plate fixation was gave satisfactory result in uncomminuted subtrochanteric fracture, especially Seinsheimer's type I, II-A,B,C or Fieldings type I, II. 6. From a consideration of these series, Judet plate showed easy to use, perfect adaptation and rigid fixation. We thought Judet plate is one of a good implants for rigid fixation of subtrochanteric fracture without severe medial cortical disruption.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the ability of endo-rectal coil MRI (ER-MRI) to predict the local pathological stage of prostate cancer prior to radical prostatectomy and compared the results with those of transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: ER-MRI using high field magnets (1.5 Tesla) were performed in 22 patients (mean age 62.8 years, range 51-73) with clinically localized prostate cancer before radical prostatectomy. Of the 22 patients, 17 patients were also assessed by TRUS. The results of the imaging techniques were compared with the post-operative histopathological findings. As one patient with pelvic lymph node metastasis, which was detected on frozen-section examination during surgery, was spared radical prostatectomy, the final evaluation included 21 patients. RESULTS: DSeven of the 21 patients (33%) were found to have extraprostatic extension (EPE), and 5 had seminal vesicle invasion (SVI). The sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing EPE using ER-MRI were 62.5% and 84.6%, respectively, and 16.7% and 100% with TRUS. The sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing SVI were 80.0% and 93.8%, respectively with ER-MRI, and 0% and 92.3% with TRUS. The accuracy of predicting SVI was 90.5% with ER-MRI compared to 70.6% with TRUS. CONCLUSIONS: ER-MRI was significantly better than TRUS for determining the local extent of prostatic cancer and for prediction of SVI in the preoperative staging of clinically localized prostate cancer.
