The main purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of self efficacy and social support to the psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy. Data were collected from October 1 to October 15, 1999 from 101 people with epilepsy who were being treated regularly at one of the university hospitals located in Seoul. The research instruments were a questionnaire to gather demographic and disease-specific data, the Epilepsy Psycho- Social Effects Scale developed by Chaplin et al(1990), the Epilepsy Self Efficacy Scale developed by DiIorio et al(1992a) and translated by Park(1999), the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire developed by Norbeck et al(1981) and translated by Oh(1985). Data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The results are as follow : 1. Of the 14 psychosocial adjustment areas, 75 of 101 subjects experienced problems in ten or more areas and 28 in all 14 areas. The severity of the psychosocial adjustment problem was moderate or more in six areas. 2. The score for self efficacy was an average of 1103.86 out of a possible 1800, for social support 117.57 for total functional out of a possible 720, and 48.21 for total network out of a possible 264. There were an average of five people on the network. The main network people were parents, brothers and sisters, spouse, friends. 3. Of the 14 psychosocial adjustment areas, six areas correlated with self efficacy and 'problems with taking medication' area had a negative correlation with social support. In conclusion, people with epilepsy have various problems in psychosocial adjustment. Nursing interventions using self efficacy should be developed to improve psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy. Also, instruments and interventions for regimen-specific supports which are suitable for epilepsy should be developed.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the psychosocial adjustment process in adolescents with epilepsy in the context of Korean society and culture. METHOD: A grounded theory method was used for data collection and analysis. Participants for this study were 9 adolescents who regularly visited an epilepsy clinic in a university hospital. The data was collected through in-depth interviews during the period from November, 2002 to June, 2003. Data collection and analysis were performed simultaneously. RESULT: Twenty-three categories emerged including 'suffering', 'psychological stigma', and 'social isolation from one's peers'. Categories were divided into paradigms which consisted of conditions, actions/ interactions, and consequences. 'Reconstructing life' was the core category in this study. The theoretical scheme was described by organizing categories around the core category. CONCLUSION: This study provides a framework for the development of individualized nursing interventions to care for adolescents with epilepsy.

Obesity is associated with an impairment of the growth hormone secretion elicited by all stimuli known to date, but the basic mechanism of the alteration is unknown to date, but the basic mechanism of this alteration is unknown. To determine whether obesity is associated with a chronic state of tonic somatostatin secretion, several tests with growth hormone stimuli such as GHRH(1 microgram/kg), clonidine(150 microgram/m(2))and Regular insulin (0.1U/kg, subcutaneously), to obese subjects and normal control with or without pyridostigmine were undertaken, and the Somatomedin-c levels were measured in both obese subjects and matched controls. 1) The peak GH levels and AUC-GH after administration of GHRH, Clonidine or Regular insulin in obese group is less than those in control group. 2) Pretreatment with pyridostigmine increased the peak GH levels and AUC-GH significantly in obese group but the absolute values are less than those of normal group. 3) The Somatomedin-c levels are significantly higher in obese group than control. Our results lend support to the view that chronically high level of somatostatin decreases the responsiveness to GHRH and secretion itself.

The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of chest physiotherapy on the amount of tracheal secretion and PaO2. After changing position of the neurosurgical patients who had tracheostomy cannula, experimental treatments were applied as bellows, manual chest percussion on group I, chest percussion and manual chest vibration on group II, chest percussion and mechanical chest vibration on group III were done. After these trials, we have analyzed the efficacy of each procedures comparing the group differences in the quantity of tracheal secretion and PaO2. Target samples were sixty patients aged between 20 to 60 who have tracheostomy state and decreased consciousness status that were admitted in NICU of a university hospital from June 1 to August 31, 1999. They assigned randomly into three experimental groups. To compare the effect of each interventions, tracheal secretion quantity was measured and PaO2 was analyzed via arterial blood gas analyzer. The data were analyzed by ANCOVA of 5% significance level using SPSS P/C program. The results were as bellows. 1) The first hypothesis " There is a difference in the quantity of the secretion among Group I, Group II and Group III" was accepted.(F=29.27, p=0.00) 2) The second hypothesis "There is a difference in PaO2 among Group I, Group II and Group III" was rejected.(F=1.71,p=0.19) From this study results, positional change and manual chest vibration including chest percussion were the most effective treatment to get maximum amount of tracheal secretion and it was confirmed that mechanical chest vibration also made much better effect than sole chest percussion method. Therefore, we concluded that the mechanical or manual chest vibration with chest percussion is more effective respiratory care method than the sole chest percussion.

PURPOSE: A significant amount of public opinion about nurse bullying is expressed on the internet. The purpose of this study was to analyze the linkage structures among words extracted from comments on internet articles related to nurse workplace bullying using semantic network analysis. METHODS: From February 2018 to April 2019, comments made on news articles posted to the Daum and Naver web portal containing keywords such as “nurse”, “Taeum”, and “bullying” were collected using a web crawler written in Python. A morphological analysis performed with Open Korean Text in KoNLPy generated 54 major nodes. The frequencies, eigenvector centralities, and betweenness centralities of the 54 nodes were calculated and semantic networks were visualized using the UCINET and NetDraw programs. Convergence of iterated correlations (CONCOR) analysis was performed to identify structural equivalence. RESULTS: This paper presents results about March 2018 and January 2019 because these months had highest number of articles. Of the 54 major nodes, “nurse”, “hospital”, “patient”, and “physician” were the most frequent and had the highest eigenvector and betweenness centralities. The CONCOR analysis identified work environment, nurse, gender, and military clusters. CONCLUSION This study structurally explored public opinion about nurse bullying through semantic network analysis. It is suggested that various studies on nursing phenomena will be conducted using social network analysis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of knowledge and the attitudes of Korean adults toward sexuality of elderly people. METHODS: This was a descriptive study using a convenience sample of 241 adults. The questionnaire had 34 items for knowledge and 26 items for attitudes. RESULTS: The result showed that, related to sexuality of elderly people, the level of knowledge was average and attitudes were conservative. The level of knowledge was significantly higher in groups that were highly educated and of low economic status (p<.05). Attitudes toward sexuality of elderly people were significantly more conservative in female, older, less educated, and high economic status group. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest a need for more education for Korean adults regarding sexuality in elderly people.

BACKGROUND: An epidemiologic study was performed after the outbreak of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) from December 2006 to May 2007. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was performed using the medical records of the patients. The case and control patients were compared for age, gender, total length of stay in MICU, prior carbapenem use, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACH II) score, presence of central line, effect of mechanical ventilation, and sputum suction. Environmental and hand-washing studies were performed during the outbreak. RESULTS: Ten CRAB-affected patients and 29 controls were enrolled in this study. Univariate analysis showed that the age, total length of stay in MICU, presence of central line, and prior carbapenem use were associated with the CRAB outbreak. However, multivariate analysis showed that only prior carbapenem use was associated with the CRAB outbreak (odd ratio: 8.67, P=0.01). The outbreak disappeared after implementing a combined infection control strategy, including the sequential disinfection of MICU and strict compliance with cross-transmission prevention protocols. CONCLUSION: The use of carbapenem was associated with an increased risk of CRAB infection. This study suggests that the MICU contamination and infection transmission by health-care workers played a major role in the CRAB outbreak. Novel strategies such as restricted use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, strict hand hygiene, strict isolation of the patients, and MICU disinfection may be required to prevent the CRAB outbreak.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a clinical preventative care program, based on a dental hygiene process (accessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation; ADPIE) in a dental clinic, by analyzing patient recognition, knowledge, practice, and satisfaction with respect to oral health. The collected data (in percentages) were analyzed Fisher's exact test and paired t-test using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 (IBM Co., USA). This study demonstrated a significant difference in oral health knowledge, recognition, and practice before and after the clinical preventive care program (p<0.05). The results were significant in the individual preventive plan within the planning stage, and in the professional teeth cleaning implementation stage (p<0.05). This result can be attributed to the sympathy of the dental hygienist (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between recommending dental checkups and regular checking of the (r=0.552, p<0.05), undergoing radiography (r=0.434, p<0.01), following an individual preventive plan (r=0.568, p<0.01), undergoing proximal machine teeth cleaning (r=0.437, p<0.05), following tooth brushing instructions (r=0.552, p<0.05), and the evaluation results (r=1.000, p<0.05). Our results demonstrate, that the clinical preventive care program, based on dental hygiene, is an effective program. Given the positive effect of dental revisits and patient recommendations promoting dental hygienists, it is hoped that this preventative program will be widely used.
