The ocular manifestations of leukemic retinopathy can be divided into secondary manifestations due to hemorrhage and macular edema, and direct manifestations of leukemic infiltration. Case reports about leukemic infiltration of the optic nerve head are rare. We have experienced a case of leukemic retinopathy in a 16-year-old girl. She visited to our hospital due to sudden decrease of visual acutiy on both eyes and confirmed acute lymphocytic leukemia on bone marrow biopsy. In addition to macular edema and hemorrhage due to secondary manifestations of leukocytosis, there were sheathing noted about retinal arterioles, and disc edema were present on both eyes which seems to be the optic nerve head infiltration of leukemic cells.

In 1971, for purpose of reduction of peak stress occuring in cement and trabecular bone of the acetabulum, Harris reported a series of metal-backed acetabular components with removable polyethylene liners that could be replaced if excessive wear occured. Modular designs of hip prostheses have become popular recently, but they introduce the risk of disassembly of the components postoperatively. And introduce of loosening and infection of femoral or acetabular components by debris of polyethylene liner. We report a case of mechanical disassembly of polyethylene liner in cementless metal backed cup, and review previously reported articles.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1995;36(3):466-472
Inspite of technical advances, long term retinal reattachment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy following the successful surgery is often disturbed by the occurrence of cell proliferation and traction. A variety of antimetabolite or anticancer drugs have been tried to use for testing their antiproliferative effects on proliferative vitreoretinopathy. To evaluate the antiproliferative property of 5-FU, we treated with the different concentration of 5-FU(0.5, 1, 5, 10 mg/L) on cultured bovine retinal pigment epithelial cells and performed dose inhibition studies. We also examined the 5-FU treated bovine retinal pigment epithelial cells by inverted microscope daily to evaluate the morphologic change for 5 days. The results were as follows; 1. 5-FU inhibited proliferation of bovine pigment epithelial cells in a dose dependent and a time dependent manner. 2. The drug concentration required for 50% inhibition of cell growth(ID50) was found to be 1.87 mg/L. 3. As the drug concentration increased, the cell density gradually decreased and the degenerative changes such as irregular shape of cells, cytoplasmic vaculoes and cell debris were aggravated. In 10 mg/L of 5-FU treated well, disruption of cell membrane and cell death were noted from the first day of incubation. These results show that 5-FU has a potent antiprolifertive effects in retinal pigment epithelial cell and toxic effet in high dose.

6.E ffects of Vitamin E, Selenium and Zinc Sulfate on Superoxide Release from Human Polymorphonuclear Leuko cytes and Cultured Bovine Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2000;41(1):81-89
To evaluate antioxidative effect of vitamin E, selenium and zinc sulfate on release of oxygen free radicals from polymorphonuclear leukocytes[PMNs], I measured the amount of superoxide release from human PMNs stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate[PMA]with addition of some antioxidant and antioxidative micronutrients using superoxide-dependent cytochrome c reduction. And to determine a protective effect of them on cultured bovine retinal pigment epithelial cells [RPE]from oxygen radicals, I measured a viability of bovine RPE using MTT assay after incubation with human PMNs and PMA. Vitamin E, selenuim and zinc sulfate are utilized at different concentrations of 1, 10 and 20 microM. Vitamin E and zinc sulfate inhibited superoxide production from PMNs stimulated by PMA from 10 microM concentration gnificantly. But in case of selenium, significant antioxidative effect was not found at each concentration. The antioxidative effect on cultured bovine RPE was evaluated using MTT assay.Among antioxidant and antioxidative micronutrients tested, vitamin E and zinc sulfate inhibited free radical damage to bovine RPE, they increased cell survival rate on culture at concentration of 1, 10 and 20 microM. In contrast, selenium did not increase cell survival rate significantly. With these results, it was found that vitamin E and zinc sulfate had antioxidative effect against superoxide release from PMNs and also protective effect of bovine RPE from free radical damages.Recent studies supported that peroxide may play an important role in causing tissue damage in human and experimental models of ocular inflammation and possibly in Behcet`s disease. It was suggested that antioxidant vitamins and minerals like vitamin E or zinc sulfate might be useful for management and/or prevention of these conditions.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1998;39(6):1192-1203
This study was undertaken to document the effect of transforming growth factor-beta2 (TGF-beta2(TGF-beta2) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the proliferation of pig retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE). Whereas bFGF increased the proliferation, TGF-beta2 showed the inhibitory effect on the proliferation The inhibitory effect of TGF-beta2 disappeared in RPE subcultured with 10ng/ml of bFGF. Both TGF-beta2- and bFGF-specific antisense oligonucleotides blocked the autocrine effect of the growth factors. PLC-71 -specific antisense oligonucleotide inhibited the effect of TGF-beta2 and bFGF. Genistein inhibited the effect of TGF-beta2 and bFGF in dose-dependent man, ner. The data suggest the involvement. of in PLC-/1 and tyrosine kinase in signalling.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(5):480-483
Ocular metastasis of metastatic carcinoma is the most common intraocular malignancy. The most common pr1mary Site of the lntraocular metastatic tumor is the breast ln women and the lung 1n men respectlvely and the choroid Is by far the most common site for intraocular metastasis. RadlOtherapy has been reported hlghly effect1ve in pal1iative treatment for metastatic tumor. We experienced a case choroidal metastasis in a known metastatic breast carcinoma patient and gained clinical lmprovement by rad1otherapy in this case.
