This study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic effect between single(A group) and five-day(B group) administration of IV gammaglobulin in the patients with Kawasaki disease from June 1987 to September 1993, who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrcs, Hanyang University College of Medicine. The clinical and echocardiographic results were as follows. 1) Of 90 cases, 40 cases belong to A group, and 50 cases to B group. The ratio of male to female was 2.60 : 1, and 85% of A group and 76% of B group was under the age of 3 years. 2) In 90% of A group and 88% of B group, peak level of platelet count was above 400,000.mm3, and as a whole peak level of platelet in 88.9% above 400,000/mm3. 3) Complications in S group were hepatitis(22.5%), coronary arterial involvement(12.5%), and gall bladder hydrops(7.5%), and in B group hepatitis(26%), gall bladder hydrops(18%), coronary arterial involvement(12%), pericardial effusion(4%), and meningitis(2%). 4) All 5 cases with mild coronary arterial dilatation in a group had improved in follow up echocardiography after 6 months. And in B group, 5 of 6 cases with coronary arterial involvement had improved, but coronary pathology in one case with large coronary aneurysm sustained after 2 years. In conclusion, we could not find the significant difference in reduction of the duration of illness or the coronary arterial disease between two groups, but we recommend single intravenous infusion of gammaglobulin as soon as possible to prevent severe coronary arterial disease.

Inferior alveolar nerve block obtained maximum anesthetic effect using a small dose of local anesthetic agent, which also has low a complication incidence. Complications of an inferior alveolar nerve block include direct nerve damage, bleeding, trismus, temporary facial nerve palsy, and etc. Among them, the major iatrogenic complication is dental needle fracture. A fragment that disappears into the soft tissue would be hard to remove, giving rise to a legal problem. A 31-year-old woman was referred for the removal of a broken needle, following an inferior alveolar nerve block. Management involved the removal of the needle under local anesthesia with pre- and peri-operative computed tomography scans.

Preretinal hemorrhage, which is located between the retina and vitreous face and is commonly developed on the macula, causes impaired central vision and if it persists, it may cause complications, such as epimacular membrane. A 49-year-old male who had dry type of age-related macular degeneration in both eyes and had an oval shaped premacular hemorrhage of unknown etiology in his left eye. We applied Q-switched Nd:YAG laser on membrane anterior to preretinal hemorrhage and ruptured it. Preretinal hemorrage was drained to inferior vitreous cavity and his central vision was rapidly improved.

Since researches and clinical experiences up to now provide us with little helps in predicting what type of spinal tuberculosis will result in good healing by chemotherapy alone without kyphosis or with minimum kyphosis, it seems impractical to await natural healing with unsightly kyphosis. STUDY DESIGN: Literature review. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to present updated information on the research support programs offered by the National Research Foundation of Korea. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: The research support programs offered by the National Research Foundation of Korea are an important cornerstone for obtaining other grants from the government and commercial companies. However, no information has yet been provided in the literature about these programs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review of the relevant literature. RESULTS: The research support programs offered by the National Research Foundation of Korea are complex. However, it is possible to find appropriate grants. It is necessary to focus on the individual basic research program. CONCLUSIONS: Novel proposals have a greater chance of receiving funding, especially if the appropriate background and preliminary data are provided.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated whether rotenone induces cellular death also in non-dopaminergic neurons and high concentration of potassium ion can show protective effect for non-dopaminergic neuron in case of rotenone-induced cytotoxicity. METHODS: Neuro 2A cells was treated with rotenone, and their survival as well as cell death mechanism was estimated using 3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium(MTT) assay, Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) release assay, fluorescence microscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis. The changes in rotenone-treated cells was also studied after co-treatment of 50mM KCl. And the protective effect of KCl was evaluated by mitochondrial membrane potential assay and compared with the effects of various antioxidants. RESULTS: Neuro 2A cells treated with rotenone underwent apoptotic death showing chromosome condensation and fragmentation as well as DNA laddering. Co-incubation of neuro 2A cells with 50mM KCl prevented it from the cytotoxicity induced by rotenone. Intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) resulting by rotenone were significantly reduced by 50mM KCl. Potassium exhibited significantly similar potency compared to the antioxidants. CONCLUSION: The present findings showed that potassium attenuated rotenone-induced cytotoxicity, intracellular accumulation of ROS, and fragmentation of DNA in Neuro 2A cells. These findings suggest the therapeutic potential of potassium ion in neuronal apoptosis, but the practical application of high concentration of potassium ion remains to be settled.

Objectives: ：The high lifetime prevalence of depression in Korea is related to problems such as suicide and decreased productivity, as well as the cost of disease due to increased use of medical services, which can cause great socioeconomic loss. Therefore, in this study, the burden of disease of depression and the importance of managing mental health diseases, which are increasing day by day, are suggested to be helpful in determining priorities in health policy establishment. Methods: ：In this study, the socio-economic cost of depression was calculated by dividing it into direct cost and indirect cost. For statistical data, data from the National Health Insurance Service of the public and statistics on diseases of national interest were mainly used. Results: ：As a result, the socio-economic cost of depression in 2019 estimated in this study was calculated to be a total of KRW 4.83 trillion, with direct costs 692.9 billion won and indirect costs 4.13 trillion won. Among them, the cost due to decrease in work performance accounted for the largest portion, accounting for 65.5%. Conclusions ：As the socio-economic burden due to depression is expected to increase in the future, it is necessary to establish a systematic funding plan for the treatment and management of depressed patients in daily life.

PURPOSE: This study discusses the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) using various approaches with the goal of evaluating the methods of diagnosis and treatment of PE in clinical practice in 2014 in South Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We surveyed 200 urologists and andrologists who treated patients with PE from July 1, 2014 to July 29, 2014 using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of 4 parts: disease, comorbidities, diagnosis, and treatment. Using the answers to this survey, current trends in the diagnosis and treatment of PE were investigated using weighted averages. RESULTS: The median number per month of patients who were diagnosed with PE was 14 patients (interquartile range, 7~24). The time to ejaculation necessary for a diagnosis of PE was considered to be <1 minute by 12% of respondents, <2 minutes by 27%, <3 minutes by 28%, <5 minutes by 13%, and 20% stated that diagnosis was based on a patient's subjective complaint. The treatment methods preferred by PE patients were reported to be pharmacological treatment (87%), surgical treatment (9.5%), and behavioral management (3.5%). The treatment methods used by respondents were pharmacological treatment (77%), surgical treatment (15%), and behavioral management (14%). The most commonly used pharmacological treatment was the oral administration of dapoxetine (97%). CONCLUSIONS: In 2014 in South Korea, various methods were used to diagnose and treat PE. The most commonly used treatment for PE was the oral administration of dapoxetine. It was also found that surgical treatment was applied in some cases.
