The most common causes of acute viral diarrhea in infants and toddlers are rotavirus, astrovirus and norovirus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate epidemiological data of pathogens obtained from stool exams and compare them with the clinical course in pediatric patients with symptoms of viral acute diarrhea and to investigate the clinical efficacy of Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) for acute diarrhea caused by rotavirus. Clinical data for three types of viral acute diarrhea were compared with the viral detection results by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Viruses were detected in 65.8% of subjects, with rotavirus being the most commonly reported in 63.3% of subjects. To examine the characteristics of each virus, a clinical epidemiological study was performed for 482 cases. Noroviral infection symptoms included vomiting and diarrhea in patients of all age groups. Dehydration in noroviral acute diarrheal patients was less common than in rotaviral acute diarrheal patients. The clinical efficacy of orally administered L. acidophilus in the treatment of acute viral diarrhea in infants and toddlers was also evaluated. L. acidophilus was a probiotic adjuvant in viral acute diarrhea in infants and toddlers.

Perfluorocarbon liquids have been used as vitreous substitutes for the complicated vitreoretinal surgery. Some authors have reported that perfluorophenanthrene(C14, F24) liquid could be left in the eye for extended term without ocular toxicity. We reviewed 37 eyes that had undergone surgery using perfluorophe-nanthrene(C14, F24) liquid at our hospital since June, 1991 to March, 1996. It was used as intraoperative tool in 20 eyes(Group I), and as postoperative tamponade material in 17 eyes for variable period from 24 hours to 45 days(Group II). Group III includes 11 anatomically successful eyes among group II. Follow up periods were from 111 to 1763(mean 341) days. The rate of anatomical success was 100, 64.7% in group I and II, and the rate of functional success was 70, 70.6, 90.9% in group I, II, III, respectively. Postoperatively, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, recurrent retinal detachment, and elevation of intraocular pressure were observed in both group I and II. According to the above results, it would be better that perflourophenanthrene liquid be used as an intraoperative tool than as a postoprative extended period tamponade.

This study was designed to investigate effects of maternal education using Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale(the following will be marked as NBAS) on the mother-infant interaction and infant behavior. The subjects of this study consisted of 48 pairs of normal mother and infant, 24 pairs for intervention group and 24 pairs for control group. The subjects were recruited from two general hospitals, and an OBGY clinic located in J city. The data were collected from July 30, 2001 to October 6, 2001. Prior to investigation and data collection, following operational hypotheses were set up in order to compare the investigative data against these operational hypotheses(H). H1: Intervention group will higher mother-infant interaction score than control group. H2: Intervention group infants will higher overall performance in infant behavior test score than control group infants. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. The mother-infant interaction score was 59.79 points in intervention group and 53.91 points in control group. The mother-infant interaction score of intervention group showed significant difference than control group. Therefore, hypothesis 1 was supported. 2. The infant behavior score of intervention group was significantly higher than control group, but partially. Therefore, hypothesis 2 was partially supported. 1) The social interaction(orientation) score was 46.58 points in intervention group and 43.50 points in control group. The orientation score of intervention group showed significant difference than control group. 2) The state regulation score was 26.79 points in intervention group and 25.33 points in control group. The state regulation score of intervention group showed significant difference than control group. In conclusion, present work demonstrated that maternal education using NBAS is an effective intervention method for promotion of mother-infant interaction and of infant behavior development. Author believes that many inexperience young mother may find NBAS-based maternal education beneficial for their nursing babies, therefore NBAS-based intervention is recommended to be adopted routinely as an integral part of neonatal nursing strategies.

11,609 of childhood new outpatients seen in Department of Dermatology of Seoul National University Hospital from 1975 to 1984 were analyzed statistica,lly. The study results were summarized as follows: l. 11, 609 out of 48, 188 new outpatients were under 15 years old age, amounting to 24. l %. 2. The 10 most common dermatoses were atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, urticari, hemangiorna, contact dermatitis, fungal disease, molluscum contagiosum, scabies, impetigo and nevocellular neuvs. The most freguent age groups were 2 to 6 years amounting to 47 2p, af total outpatients. 4. The peak incidence occurred in August, while the lowest incidence occurred in November and October. 5. Dermatoses which showed increasing tendency were nevocellular nevus and vitiligo, those of decreasing tendency were contact dermatitis and impetigo,

To explain a part of the machanism of regression of new vessels after laser photocoagulation in retinal vascular occlusive diseases causing neovascularization, particularly for diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinopathy of prematurity, and age-related macular degene- ration, we performed this study. Photocoagulation was done with argon green laser on the right superofrontal retina of the 15 eyes of white rats. On the first, third, and sixth day after laser photocoagulation, both eyes of 5 rats were enucleated and stained with polyclonal anti-transforming growth factor-beta2(Anti-TGF-beta 2) and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(Anti-VEGF) antibody by immuno peroxidase technique. TGF-beta2 and VEGF were not expressed in retina of normal control eyes. After laser photocoagulation, degree of expression of TGF-beta2 and VEGF increased in 24 hours, only in and adjacent to the photocoagulated area. Thereafter, degree of expression of both factor decreased, especially that of VEGF decreased much more than that of TGF-beta2. To elucidate the exact mechanism, more qualitative and quantitative analysis will be necessary.

Aminoglycosides are frequently used antibiotics in children. The multiple daily dosing (MDD) in infants and children is twice or three times daily depending on age. Recent studies in adults have shown that once daily dosing (ODD) maximizes the bactericidal activity and might minimize the toxicity of antibiotics. So, I reviewed many studies about efficacy, toxicity and cost effectiveness of ODD of aminoglycosides in children. Most studies suggest that ODD compared with MDD of aminoglycosides is theoretically more efficacious and has no higher toxicity in infants and children. But, the total number of patients included in the studies is not large. Multi-center, controlled prospective studies are required in larger numbers of infants and children to determine the efficacy and safety of the ODD regimen in children before ODD of aminoglycosides can be recommended for routine use.

We reviewed medical records of 24 eyes which had undergone transscleral suture fixation of PC IOL after removal of clear or cataractous lens combined with pars plana vitrectomy from May 1992 to December 1996. The follow u[ [eropds fpr tjos seroes ramged frp, 54 to 772 days(mean 253 days). The visual acuity of 21 eyes (87.5%) was improved and that of 1 eyes(4.2%) was not changed. Postoperative complications, such as IOL precipitates(9 eyes), anterior chamber fibrin exudation (2 eyes), elevation of intraocular pressure(2 eyes)intraocular bleeding(2 eyes), corneal edema (1 eye), tilting of IOL(1 eye), decentration of IOL(1 eye), and retinal detachment(1 eye), were developed. Based on these results, transscleral suture fixation of PC IOL may be a good operative technique in aphakic eyes undergone pars plana vitrectomy and removal of lens.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to analyze the factors affecting the stages of exercise behaviors changes of low back pain patients. METHODS: The participants in this study were 220 low back pain patients who have been treated by therapeutic exercise or had the exercise treatment under the doctor's advice. The tools used for this study were the stages of exercise behavior change, intrinsic motivation questionnaires, and physical activity social support scale (PASS). RESULTS: The group that did exercise (preparation stage, maintenance stage, action stage) was 75.9% but the group that did not exercise (precontemplation stage, contemplation stage) was 24.1%. Social supports from family members and friends and motivation affected the exercise behaviors changes. And 34.6% of the exercise behavior change can be explained by the social support (family, friend) and motivation. CONCLUSION: There were two recommendations for maintaining the exercise behaviors of low back pain patients based on theoretical background. First, we recommended more exercise programs which reinforce social supports from family and friend for constant exercise behaviors of low back pain patients. Second, more exercise programs for the low back pain patients who have similar health goals or problems were needed for motivating them to join the exercise programs.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate factors associated with depression among elderly living alone and those living with a spouse in an urban area. Methods: This study was a community-based, cross-sectional study that included 384 elderly aged 60 years or older.The subjects completed a questionnaire that covered sociodemographic characteristics and chronic medical illnesses.The Korean version of the Short Form of the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Korean version of the Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s Disease (KQOL-AD), and the Korean Mini Mental State Examination in the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease assessment packet were also performed. Results: The participants were divided into two groups: 137 elderly individuals living alone and 247 elderly individuals living with a spouse. Heart disease (odds ratio [OR]=13.099, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.892-90.697, p=0.009) was identified as a risk factor for depression, while the religion (OR=0.137, 95% CI=0.028-0.668, p=0.014) was found to be a protective factor against depression among elderly individuals living alone. Higher scores on the KQOL-AD scale were found to be protective factors against depression for both elderly individuals living alone (OR=0.742, 95% CI= 0.636-0.867, p<0.001) and those living with a spouse (OR=0.664, 95% CI=0.573-0.771, p<0.001). Conclusions Among elderly living alone in an urban area, heart disease, religion, and the quality of life appear to have an impact on depression. To reduce the risk of depression in the elderly, it is necessary to properly manage heart disease, encourage religious participation, and enhance the quality of life.
