3.Why do suicide and depression occur?.

Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2012;55(4):329-334
As suicide deaths have been rapidly increasing among the Korean people, the clinical conditions associated with suicide including major depressive disorder (MDD) have also been in the public eye for decades. Thus we discuss the relationship between suicide and depression from the psychosocial perspective. Because the introjected aggression or hostility may be essential psychodynamic factors in suicide and depression, the clinical psychiatrist's or psychotherapist's empathy may be the important psychotherapeutic method in the recovery of object relationships or relieving suicidal patients' self-destructive tendencies. Although various and diverse psychological features have been suggested as the predictive factors of suicide, they have not yet been demonstrated by any statistical models. Psychiatrists should be aware that suicide or suicidal behaviors might be strongly associated with sociocultural background in Korea. Further research may be needed in the area of the relationship among suicide, depression, and sociocultural correlates.

4.Tao in the Bible of Korean Revised Version.
Seon Cheol PARK ; Yong Chon PARK
Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2007;46(4):378-390
OBJECTIVES: It is interesting that the term "Tao" is seen in the Bible of Korean revised version, because Tao is the essential part of traditional Korean culture. Korean culture has 5000 years of history rooted in the humanitarian ideal that means devotion to the welfare of mankind. Such humanitarian ideal had accepted, digested and finally recreated many religions and ideas without conflict. Because understanding the patient's culture is important in the psychiatric practice, it is worthwhile to compare the Tao in the Bible and in the traditional culture. This will lead us to understand the Bible more accurately, and understanding the Bible can broaden our view toward the traditional Korean culture. METHODS: The authors searched the term "Tao" in the Bible of Korean Revised Version and compared it with the Biblia Hebrica Stuttgatensia, and Novum Testatum Graece to detect the original expressions of Tao. The meaning of Hebrew or Greek original expressions were compared with English expressions of The Holy Bible, the King James Version. RESULTS: Tao was recorded 85 times in the Bible of Korean Revised Version. The majority of original expressions were "derek" (43 times) in Hebrew Old Testaments, and "hodos" (14 times) in Greek New Testament. The majority of English expressions corresponding to Tao were "way" or "ways" (59 times). "Derek" means the commandments of God. "Hodos" means the way of Jesus Christ. CONCLUSION: "Derek" and "hodos" commonly mean the righteousness and sanctification required to human with the berith (testament) of God. Tao in the Bible of Korean Revised Version is similar to Tao in the traditional culture in the viewpoint of enlightenment. Korean psychotherapy can be elaborated further with the acceptance of Western psychotherapy on the basis of deep understanding of Korean traditional culture, such as Tao.

7.Web Based Chromosome Karyotyping Instruction System.

Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 2000;6(4):99-105
The task for chromosome karyotyping and diagnosis is requiring repetitive, time consuming job and high cost even it is done by well-experienced cytogenetists. Therefore an web based chromosome karyotyping instruction system has been established to be able to analyze chromosomes and obtain necessary advises from the database instead of human experts and the database is including 2 divisions with database and agent. For the first of all, database model was constructed with relational database consisting of Patient_DB, image_DB, Disease_DB and Manage_DB. As the second procedure, knowledge base by IF THEN production rule was implemented to a knowledge domain with normal and abnormal chromosomes. For the last, independent agent with the inference by knowledge base could enter the inference data into the database.Experimental data were composed of normal chromosomes of 2,736 patients' cases and abnormal chromosomes of 259 patients' cases that have been obtained from GTG-banding metaphase peripheral blood and amniotic fluid samples. The completed system provides variously morphological information by analysis of normal or abnormal chromosomes and it also makes users enable to control and search the information in a short period with learning of high amount of knowledge.

To determine the perinatal mortality and morbidity of fetuses with absent end-diastolic velocities (AEDV) of the umbilical artery in severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, the outcome of 5 fetuses with AEDV was compared with that of 35 fetuses with positive end-diastolic velocities (PEDV). The study population comprised 38 cases of severe pre-eclampsia and 2 cases of eclampsia with structurally normal singletons, who had had umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry weekly from admission to delivery. The Doppler velocimetry result was not used for the clinical management. Perinatal death and neonatal morbidity from both groups were further examined in gestational age category to control the influence of preterm births. The incidence of AEDV of the umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry in severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia was 12.5% (5/40). The AEDV group had a significantly higher incidence than the PEDV group in terms of ceasarean section due to fetal distress (60% : 17%), Apgar score < 7 at 5 minutes (60% : 14%), perinatal death (25% : 0%) and assisted mechanical ventilation (67% : 9%) both at 32-36 weeks. Time intervals from the detection of AEDV to delivery of live neonates varied from the day to 15 days. In conclusion, AEDV in the umbilical artery might be of clinical value in routine surveillance of pregnancies complicated by severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and predict hypoxic fetal condition which needs operative interventions before or during labor and mechanical ventilation after birth.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1992;26(4):414-416
A 39-year-old male patient presented with chronic abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhea for 8 months. Colon study showed an annular stricture at the ileocecal value. He underwent ileocecectomy with clinica impression of intestinal tuberculosis. The resected intestinal wall along the lieocecal junction demonstrated a localized, annular constriction and intramural nodular inflammatory growth in which were clusters of multiple microabscesses as well as acute and chronic inflammatory cell infiltration including eosinophils and fibrosis. Encountered were a few resolving phase of parasitic granulomatous tunnels in which fragments of degenerated sparganum with foreign body reaction were found in one focus. He had history of ingesting uncooked frogs 2 years ago. The above case suggests that differential diagnosis of inflammatory tumorous lesions in the intestine should include sparganosis in Korea.
