1.A Study on the Social Perceptions of the Baby Box and Infant Abandonment

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate the social perceptions of the baby box and infant abandonment. METHODS: The study included a survey on social perceptions of infant abandonment, including the baby box and permissiveness of infant abandonment. F-tests and t-tests were performed to clarify the differences in permissiveness of infant abandonment based on general characteristics. RESULTS: First, it was found that awareness of the baby box was high, and positive perceptions were slightly higher than negative perceptions due to the value placed on the abandoned child's life and safety, the unavoidable reasons for not rearing a child, and the child's quality of life after abandonment. However, the reasons for negative attitudes toward the baby box included the increase in infant abandonment and the decrease in parental responsibility toward the child. Second, the permissiveness of infant abandonment was generally low; however, the level of permissiveness differed according to age, education level, status, and marital status. For people who are in their 30s or older, hold a graduate or higher level degree, are employed, and are married, the permissiveness of infant abandonment was lower than that of others. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the current support policy for unmarried mothers should be changed to improve the economic and social conditions of child care. Furthermore, we must strive to improve the social perceptions of various family structures, including unmarried parents and their children.

2.Effect of apical constriction diameter, irrigant flow rate, and needle tip design on apical pressure

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of apical constriction (AC) diameter, irrigant flow rate, and needle tip design on apical pressure (AP) during the root canal irrigation. Five extracted human mandibular premolars were instrumented up to #35 (0.06 taper) using nickel-titanium rotary instruments. AC was determined at 1 mm from the apical foramen. Three needles with different tip designs (notched, side-vented, and flat) were placed 3 mm from AC. APs were measured with varying flow rates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mL/s. The AC diameter of the teeth was enlarged to #40 and #45 (0.06 taper) successively, and the aforementioned measurement procedure was repeated (n=5). When the other conditions were controlled, AP increased with decreasing AC diameter or increasing irrigant flow rate, and the AP of flat needle was the highest, followed by notched, and side-vented needle (p<0.05). The APs with 0.05 mL/s flow rate were lower than central venous pressure (5.88 mmHg) for all conditions. Under the conditions of the present study, flat needle is not recommended in narrow AC (0.35 mm), as the value of the AP with a flow rate of 0.05 mL/s is similar to the central venous pressure. However, in AC diameter of >0.35 mm, open-end (notched or flat) needles can be used to improve irrigant replacement in the apical portion using a flow rate of 0.05 mL/s.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of needle tip design and position, and irrigant flow rate on apical pressure (AP) during root canal irrigation. Three different needles according to change of needle tip design (notched, side-vented, and flat) were positioned at the point of 1, 3, and 5 mm from the apical constriction (needle tip position). For each needle tip design and position, APs were measured with varying flow rates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 ml/s. When the other conditions were controlled, AP increased with decreasing needle tip position or increasing irrigant flow rate (p < 0.05). The AP of flat needle was the highest, followed by notched, side-vented needle for the same needle tip position and irrigant flow rate. The APs at needle tip position of 1 mm or with more than 0.1 ml/s flow rate were higher than central venous pressure (5.88 mmHg) for all conditions. Flat needle was not recommended for clinical use due to sharp increase of AP with changing needle tip position and irrigant flow rate. For safe and effective root canal irrigation, irrigant should be applied with the needle tip position of 3 mm and flow rate of less than 0.05 ml/s.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma involves organs outside the bone marrow, but involvement of the pancreas is very rare. We present the imaging findings of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the pancreas in a patient with multiple myeloma. Mixed echogenecity was noted at US, and marked enhancement at CT and MR.

7.Factors Affecting Loneliness in Community Dwelling Korean Elders.

PURPOSE: This study was done to investigate the relationship of family function, self-esteem, life satisfaction, and general characteristics to loneliness in community dwelling Korean elders and identify factors affecting loneliness. METHOD: With a cross-sectional causal-relationship design and a convenience sample, 205 elders residing in three districts of the city of Seoul, S. Korea were recruited. Participants were assessed using the Family APGAR Score, Self-Esteem Scale, Life-Satisfaction Scale, and Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale. RESULTS: The mean score for degree of loneliness (Mean=39.61, SD=10.09) was just below the mean for the scale (Possible range 20-80). Loneliness had significant negative correlations with family function (r= -.400, p<.001), self-esteem (r= -.399, p<.001), and life satisfaction (r= -.644, p<.001). Other general characteristics that had significant or nearly significant relationships with loneliness were perceived current financial and health status, whether doing any exercise or physical activities, degree of close relationship with family members, and length of living in current residence. Among variables, life satisfaction (Standardized beta = -.589, p<.001) and length of living in current residence (Standardized beta = -.136, p<.05) significantly predicted degree of loneliness. CONCLUSION: Findings of this study allow a comprehensive understanding of loneliness and related factors among community dwelling elders in Korea. However, further studies with a larger random sample from various living environments are necessary.

Objective:
The increasing concern over adolescent suicide necessitates suicide prevention training for school teachers, as students spend a significant portion of their time at school. This study’s objective is to develop a suicide prevention program tailored for teachers.
Methods:
The program was developed by a multidisciplinary research team, drawing on a review of both domestic and international suicide prevention programs, related scholarly articles, and Korean psychological autopsy interviews of adolescents. This was complemented by a survey of teachers to assess the program’s practicality and usability.
Results:
The developed program comprises three parts, consistent with other versions: Careful Observation, Active Listening, and Risk Evaluation and Expert Referral. Careful Observation focuses on training teachers to recognize verbal, behavioral, and situational warning signs of suicidal ideation in students; Active Listening involves strategies for encouraging students to express their suicidal thoughts and techniques for being an empathetic and attentive listener; Risk Evaluation and Expert Referral provides instruction on how to assess suicide risk and assist students safely.
Conclusion
It is anticipated that this program will equip teachers with valuable knowledge and skills, contributing to a reduction in adolescents suicide rates.
