BACKGROUND: There are a few methods, including primary intention, deleyed primary closure and secondary intention, to irpair several types of defects. But commonly-used primary intentional repair of a defect after surgical removal of a skin cancer by graft, flap or simple closure has several limitations such as the need of a skillful technique and various complications. OBJECTIVE: We undertook a secondary intention using occlusive dressing with a polyurethane film after skin cancer surgery instead of a primary repair and evaluated its efficacy, particularly in points of simplicity and safety, and cosmetic results. METHODS: We randomly chose 14 cases of skin cancers in 13 patients who had undergone simple surgical excision or Mohs micrographic surgery and then undertook secondary intention with polyurethane film after informed consent. Postsurgical wound care included cleansing with normal saline or boric acid, then covering the defect with antibiotic ointment, gauze and film a at regular intervals.

Rheumatoid arthritis is considered to be a collagen disease which mainly involves articular structures, sometimes has extraarticular manifestations. It is generally accepted now that periarticular osteoporosis develops in early phase of rheumatoid arthritis and generalized osteoporosis in late period. Of several methods of non-invasive measurement of bone mass, single photon absorptiometry was introduced by Cameron and Sorenson(1963) and it has been used for measuring bone mass by many authors with its precision, reproducibility and objective quantification. We tried to observe the quantitative changes of bone mass in rheumatoid arthritis patients with single photon absorptiometry technique. Through the study of bone densitometry in 30 rheumatoid arthritic women compared with age-matched 60 healthy controls, we obtained follow results. 1. Bone mineral density of the rheumatoid arthritis group was lower than that of the control group, but had no significant statistical difference. 2. Bone mineral density of the 40–49-year-old group and 50–59-year-old group was considerablely different in the rheumatoid arthritis group and control group. 3. Bone mineral density of the group whose rheumatoid arthritis history was over 2 year was lower than that of the group below 2 year.

Glomus tumor shows histologically characteristic three components of glomus cells, vascular structures, and spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells. It is classified into solid glomus tumor, glomangioma and glomangiomyoma according to relative proportions of components. Glomangiomyoma, the least frequent type of glomus tumor, has its overall histopathologic pattern identical to common solid glomus tumor or glomangioma. In contrast to the foregoing types, however, it has an important number of spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells, which blend with the glomus cells. A 49-year-old woman presented with 2-year history of painful bluish red nodule beneath nail plate of right 4th finger. We made a diagnosis of glomangiomyoma by virtue of routine histopathologic examinations and immunohistochemical stains such as vimentin, smooth muscle actin and desmin.

A 13-year-old male presented a single, elevated, oval, walnut sized, soft mass on the left retroauricular ares which has increased in size since birth, Histopathologic examination revealed a cyst in the subcutaneus area. BACKGROUND: Recently, it is substituted automatic sphygmomanometer for mercury sphygmomanometer. But it seems to be insufficient for data of its accuracy. A sample accurate automatic sphygmomanometer could have an important role in the management of hypertension. The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of the automatic sphygmomanometer that is used common practice and at home. METHODS: We collected 247 patients who visited the department of Famiiy Practice of Taegu medical center from April to August 1996. BP was measured sequentially same arm by standard device(mercury. sphygmomanometer), test device A(A&D TM-2650), test device B(seine SE-2000). We assessed the automatic sphygmomanometer according to the standards set out by the British Hypertension Society(BHS) protocol and the American Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation(AAMI). These data were analysed using pearson' correlation and paired t-test. RESULTS: Test device A was highly correlated to mercury sphygmomanometer in systolic and diastolic BP(r=0.90, r=0.88). Also test device B was highly correlated to that(r=0.90, r=0.87). The mean difference between BP value obtained by the standard device and those obtained by the test device A were 0.59+/-7.66mmHg systole(mean+/-SD) and 3.83+/-6.43mmHg diast.ole, whereas the difference between the former and those obtained by the test device B were 1.70+/-7.99mmHg systole.and 5.58+/-6.38mmHg diastole. Comparing to standard device, there were a signifioant difference except systolic BP of test device A(P<0.05). According to the criteria of the AAMI, the diastolic BP of test device B was not enough and according to the criteria of the BHS, the diastolic BP of both test device were not enough. CONCLUSIONS: Both test device were highly correlated to mercury sphygmomanometer. But according to the criteria of the BHS and AAMI, there were not enough. Because the use of automatic sphygmomanometer was popularized, I think that further study will be required to assess of accuracy.

Epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica is rare, chronic non-inflammtory mechanobullous disease of hereditary trait, which easily produces bullae by minor trauma or sponta neosly. A 1-day old male neonate presented wide spread vesicobullous minor, eruptions since birth. On examination, tense bullse were noted on the dorsa of the feet and right knei: area Which is usually serous but may be hemarrhagic tendeney. This was healed by the dropping of oxoline and wet betadine auze application along with the administration of vitamin E and phenytoin. We present a case of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica that seems be a dominant type considering the presence of family history with histopathologic and electron microscopic findings.

The radiation emitted during radiological examinations can be harmful to the human body, but the technique is still used because it is helpful to the patient. Therefore, radiologic examinations must follow radiation protection principles such as justification and optimization, and only minimal required re-examinations should be performed. Proper use of radiation in the medical field can be achieved by proper education of individuals from multiple medical fields.
