Since early 1980's high resolution ultrasound has been world-widely used for detection of cranial lesions ininfants but not widely used in korea. Authors prospectively analysed ultrasonographic findings of 107 cases whichwere confirmed by CT, autopsy or follow-up studies as supplement. the distribution of 107 cases was intracranialhematoma 40 cases, hydrocephalus 36 cases, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy 10 cases, porencephalic cyst 5 cases, cephalhematoma 5 cases, agenesis of corpus callosum 4 cases, medulloblastoma 2 cases and each one case of A-Vmalformation, intraventricular cyst, Dandy Walker cyst, lipoma and hydranecephaly. We could conclude thatneurosonography of infants was very useful and effective method in detection of cranial lesions such asintracranial hematoma, especially germinal matrix hemorrhage or intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infant, hydrocephalus, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and congenital anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changing pattern of serum leptin level and the correlation between estradiol level during the clomiphene citrate challenge test(CCCT) or controlled ovarian hyperstimulation(COH) cycle. METHODS: Twenty-seven women who underwent CCCT and fourteen women who underwent controlled ovarian hyperstimulation were recruited to measure the serum leptin level. After correction of serum concentration with body mass index(BMI), changes of leptin level and correlation with serum estradiol level during CCCT and COH cycle were analyzed. RESULTS: Circulating leptin levels were significantly correlated with BMI at each time point in CCCT cycle(P<0.01). In CCCT cycle, leptin/BMI level was significantly increased at midluteal phase compared to that of menstrual cycle day 3 and 10(p<0.05). In women with regular menstruation, leptin/BMI level at midluteal phase was significantly higher than that of menstrual day 3 and 10, but this difference was not seen in women with irregular menstruation. The leptin/BMI level in COH cycle showed increasing tendency throughout ovarian stimulation. But there was no significant correlation between leptin/BMI and estradiol level in CCCT and COH cycle. CONCLUSION: There is a significant correlation between BMI and circulating leptin level. Midluteal leptin level is significantly higher than that of follicular phase in CCCT cycle, and there is an increasing tendency in leptin level after ovarian stimulation in CCCT and COH cycle without statistical significance. These findings suggest that circulating estradiol concentration has no major influence on circulating leptin level.

Stress has been regrarded as one of the causes of central serous chorioretinopathy. We studied the effect of Hexamethonium (ganglionic blocking agent) on experimentaI serous chorioretinopathy following epinephrine injection in rabbits. In group 1, we injected the 0.1 % epinephrine into the rabbits through IV route for 10 days and in group 2, we addited Hexamethonium subcutaneously prior to injection of the epinephrine same term of gorup 1. We could find slight histological changes in gorup 2 as com paired with group 1, which produced serous chorioretinopathy, under the electronmicroscopic study so we would expect the preventive effect of Hexamethonium on the stress-induced serous chorioretinopathy.

Beta-fluoroethylacetate has been extensively used as the rodenticide in Korea. In some patients with acute poisoning, beta-fluoroethylacetate caused cerebellar dysfunction as a single and persistent neurologic sequela after a period of an acute neurological disorder which is characterized by mental deterioration, seizures, and respiratory failure. But there has been no report of pathological findings to explain neurological deficit. We tried to verify the histologic changes of the central nervous systems in beta-fluoroethylacetate poisoned rats. Silver staining(Gallyas) was used to evaluate the histology. In acute intoxication experiment with LD50(7mg/Kg), beta-fluoroethylacetate elicited acute onset of consciousness deterioration, generalized tonic-clonic seizures and large amplitude tremulous activity involving whole body with full recovery after 24 hours. There was no discernible pathologic change in CNS in acutely poisoned rats. However, when poisoned with sublethal dose(5mg/Kg) daily for five days, a moderate degree of nerve cell degeneration was found selectively in dentate nucleus, Purkinie cell layer, vestibulo-cochlear nucleus and striatum. This change was not seen in hippocampus, cerebral cortex or cerebellar cortex. These findings were well correlated with the previous reports of selective pathology in human 5-FU intoxication cases. Our preliminary results suggest that beta-fluoroethylacetate, a kind of cellular metabolism inhibitor may induce selective neuropathology mainly involving cerebellar output pathway in rats.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1997;24(3):593-597
Cystadenomas are benign neoplasm in which the epithelium demonstrates adenomatous proliferation. Several morphologic variants of cystadenomas have bean described, including papillary-oncocytic, mucous, and seromucous subtypes. Cystadenomas arising from salivary glands are very rare and seromucous cystadenoma of parotid gland has not been reported in Korea so far. Cystadenomas of the parotid gland usually Present as asymptomatic slowly growing mass and those of the minor salivary glands produce smooth nodules that may be compressible. We performed a superficial parotidectomy in a patient with a seromucous cystadenoma. This may be the first report of seromucous cystadenoma of carotid gland in Korea.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1996;37(10):1694-1699
In order to evaluate the effect of Q-switched YAG laser iridotomy to the intraocular pressure, we performed the Q-switched Nd-YAG laser iridotomy in 39 eyes of 28 patients with angle closure glaucoma. Postoperative difference of the intraocular pressure was 27.5 +/- 27.0mmHg and the intraocular pressure was reduced. After 2 months, 12 eyes had needed one kind of anti-glaucomatous medication, 7 eyes had needed no medication, 6 eyes had needed two medications and 1 eye had needed three medications. Postoperative complications were iris bleeding(10 eyes), transient pressure rising(9 eyes), focal corneal opacities(2 eyes) and closure of iridotomy(2 eyes). These result shows that laser iridotomy should be considered in the management of angle closure glaucoma.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1991;25(2):174-177
Sebaceous adenoma is a rare solitary or multiple yellow, circumscribed neoplasm consisting of sharply demarcated, proliferating lobules or irregular size and shape that are composed of three cell bypes: basal cells, mature and transitional sebaceous cells. We reported a case of extremely rare sebaceous adenoma arising in caruncle of the left eye in a 78-year-old female. A polypoid tumor nodule, measuring 0.6x0.5 cm, was noticed 6 months before resection. It was grayish white with granular surface. There is no evidence of associated visceral neoplasm. Histopathologically, it revealed a lobulated tumor, composed of equal amount of highly differentiated sebaceous and intermediate transitional epithelium with minor participation of basaloid cells. This tumor is thought to be the neoplasm of the sebaceous gland normaly present in the caruncle of the eye rather than ectopic origin.

10.Operative Treatment of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: A Comparison of Medial Epicondylectomy and Anterior Transposition of the Ulnar Nerves.
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 2002;37(6):704-708
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the results of medial epicondylectomy and anterior submuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve in patients with primary cubital tunnel syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with primary cubital tunnel syndrome formed the basis of this study. Eighteen patients underwent medial epicondylectomy and twelve patients underwent anterior submuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve. The mean follow-up period was 35 months. Postoperative clinical results were assessed using Gabel and Amadio's rating scale which evaluats pain, sensory and motor function in four grades. Clinical results were compared between two groups in McGowan grades two and three. RESULTS: Two excellent, twelve good and six fair results were obtained in patients with McGowan grade II. In McGowan grade III, three were good, six fair and one was poor. No significant difference in the results was observed between two surgical groups. CONCLUSION: Medial epicondylectomy and anterior submuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve showed no difference in results between patients with primary cubital tunnel syndrome. It seems that medial epicondylectomy is more appropriate because of its simplicity during operation and in terms of postoperative management.
