1.Obesity Index and Related Factors among Elementary School Students Visiting Pediatric Department of General Hospital.

The present study was conducted to investigate dietary habits and biochemical indices according to the obesity index of elementary school students visiting a hospital for diagnosis. The subjects of this study were 150 elementary school students and their mothers. The overweight rates of child subjects were 37.5% for males and 40.9% for females, whereas the rates of underweight children were 35.0% for males and 14.5% for females. Children's obesity index significantly decreased with an increase in the average monthly income of children's families. Children's obesity index, mothers's weights, BMI, and percent ideal body weight were all positively correlated. Blood biochemical values in children (hemoglobin, hematocrit, albumin, globulin, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels) and their obesity index also showed positive correlation. For the underweight group, the frequency of iron-deficiency anemia was significantly high, whereas for the overweight group, the frequency of dyslipidemia was high. There was a significant increase in children's obesity index and a decrease in frequency of regular exercise with time spent on the TV/computer. The normal weight group recorded the highest total scores for mothers' nutritional knowledge, whereas the overweight group recorded the lowest total scores. Therefore, to maintain healthy weight in children, nutritional education programs for mothers and children should be developed.

2.Acinic Cell Carcinoma of The Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare salivary gland carcinoma, usually being found in the parotid gland and is uncommon in the other major and minor salivary glands. The tumor cells consist of either serous or mucous acinar cells with few ductal or myoepithelial cell elements. The tumor is a low-grade malignancy with slow growth potential. Surgical therapy depends on tumor size and the extent of infiltration into neighboring tissues. Superficial parotidectomy or total parotidectomy is the initial method of therapy in case of acinic cell carcinoma on parotid gland. When regional neck lymph nodes are involved, the operation is combined with a neck dissection, or with radiation therapy. In the short follow up period, acinic cell carcinoma has good prognosis with 5 year survival rate after surgery is over 80%. In the long-term follow-up, however, there is a tendency to increase in recurrence or metastasis. We experienced a case of acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland in a 57-year-old female, so we report it with literatures review.

3.Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Maxilla Originated in Odontogenic Cyst: A Case Report.

Primary intraosseous carcinoma(PIOC) is defined as a squamous cell carcinoma arising within the jaw, having no initial connection with the oral mucosa. The squamous cell carcinoma within the bone can be presumably developed from residues of the odontogenic epithelium, therefore, it is seen in the jaw only. Metastatic carcinoma from another primary site should be excluded in the diagnosis of Primary Intraosseous Carcinoma. This is a case of 62-year-old man, who initially diagnosed as odontogenic cyst on maxilla, but its pathologic examination was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma with odontogenic cyst. We treated this patient with partial maxillectomy, modified radical neck dissection(mRND), and postoperative radiation therapy.

4.Animal Models in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

In studying child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP), animal models are extremely useful to explore the pathogenesis of disorders or to experiment drugs as substitutes for the human body. Particularly in young children, the accuracy of their expression can be low and there are many restrictions in experiments directly upon the patients including difficulties in medication and tests. However, it is not easy to develop animal models because standards for diagnosis are phenomenological and based on behavioral descriptions. The biggest problem in research using animal models in CAP is that it is difficult to make representative models specific to each disorder. The present study reviewed articles about research with animal models in connection to disorders common in CAP such as autism , Tourette syndrome (TS), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mental retardation (MR). Recent researches through animal models are mainly focused on anatomical studies on sites related to disorders and genetic studies. Although there have been many researches for autism, they still seem to be away from establishing representative models. For TS, it is not easy to make specific animal models because of the complexity of the syndrome, but animal models have been greatly helpful to find pathogenesis and develop remedies for TS. In ADHD, Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR) model is recognized as a fine model. With regard to MR, a majority of studies are gene researches related to known abnormal chromosomes. Throughout this review, authors recognized that only few articles have been published using animal models for CAP in Korea. We hope that research using animal models will be more activated in Korea.

5.Localization of cytoskeletal proteins in Pneumocystis carinii by immuno-electron microscopy.

Pneumocystis carinii causes serious pulmonary infection in immunosuppressed patients. This study was undertaken to observe the cytoskeletal proteins of P. carinii by immuno-electron microscopy. P. carinii infection was experimentally induced by immunosuppression of Sprague-Dawley rats for seven weeks, and their lungs were used for the observations of this study. The gold particles localized actin, tropomyosin, and tubulin. The actin was irregularly scattered in the cytoplasm of the trophic forms but was much more concentrated in the inner space of the cell wall of the cystic forms called the inner electron-lucent layer. No significant amount of tropomyosin was observed in either trophic forms or cystic forms. The tubulin was distributed along the peripheral cytoplasm and filopodia of both the trophic and cystic forms rather than in the inner side of the cytoplasm. Particularly, in the cystic forms, the amount of tubulin was increased and located mainly in the inner electron-lucent layer of the cell wall where the actin was concentrated as well. The results of this study showed that the cell wall of P. carinii cystic forms is a structure whose inner side is rich in actin and tubulin. The location of the actin and tubulin in P. carinii suggests that the main role of these proteins is an involvement in the protection of cystic forms from the outside environment by maintaining rigidity of the cystic forms.

7.Evaluation of the Nutrition Status and Metabolic Syndrome Prevalence of the Members according to the Number of Household Members based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2014)

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the nutritional status and prevalence of metabolic syndrome of the people who participated in the KNHANES according to the number of household members. They were assessed by using information from the 2013~2014 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). METHODS: A total of 6,088 persons aged 19 years and over participated in 2013~2014 KNHANES, and they were classified into three groups according to the number of household members (single-person, two-person, three-person & over). The dietary behavior, nutritional status, health-related factors and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome of the subjects were investigated with using information from the survey questionnaires of KNHANES. The nutrient intake data of the subjects were obtained by the 24-hour recall method and this was analyzed for evaluating the nutrition adequacy ratio and the index of nutritional quality. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the subjects, and according to the study groups, was estimated using the blood and physical measurement data of the subjects. RESULTS: As for EQ-5D index available for all the health states generated by the EQ-5D descriptive system, the single-person household member was the lowest among all the household types. The index of nutrition quality for protein, crude fiber, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin and vitamin C in the single-person household was lower than that of the two-person or the three-person and over households (p<0.001). The mean adequacy ratio of single-person households was significantly decreased compared with that of the other types of households (p<0.001). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher in the single-person households than that in the multiple-person households (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that dietary behaviors, nutrition status and health status might be influenced by the number of household members. The results from this study would be useful for improving Korean people's dietary life and health status by implementing evidence-based, specialized intervention for the members of diverse types of households.

8.The Usefulness of Color Doppler Ultrasonography In the Evaluation of Breast Mass.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of color Doppler ultrasonography in the differential diagnosis of breast masses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated to pathologically proven breast lesions. Forty-three were benign (39 fibroadenomas, two papillomas and two lipoma) and 27 were malignant (25 infiltrating ductal cardinomas, one mucinous carinoma and one atypical medullary caricinoma). In 32 cases, we categorized color signal from 0 to III, according to the degree of vascularity, and analysed peak systolic velocity (PSV) and resistive index (RI). RESULTS: Color signals of malignant lesions tended to be high grade (II, III), whereas those of benign lesions tended to be low (0, I), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.005). In the analysis of spectral waveform , correlation between RI, PSV and malignancy was statistically significant (P<0.02). RI above 0.7 and PSV above 10 were the highest recorded values for sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSION: Color Doppler ultrasound is a useful modality to distinguish benign from malignant breast masses. Malignancy is suggested when the color signal is grade II or III, the resistive index is higher than 0.7, and peak systolic velocity is higher than 10cm/sec.

10.A Case of Acute Pancreatitis in a Neuroblastoma Patient after Retinoic Acid Therapy.

Retinoic acid has been used successfully as a differentiating agent in acute promyelocytic leukemia and neuroblastoma. However, some adverse effects have been recognized, such as headaches, dry skin and retinoic acid syndrome, a life threatening acute cardiorespiratory disorder. Acute pancreatitis with hyperlipidemia has rarely been reported. We experienced a case of acute pancreatitis with hyperlipidemia in a neuroblastoma patient after retinoic acid therapy for 21 months. Although the patient was ordered nothing by mouth and total parenteral nutrition was administrated, she died of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and pulmonary hemorrhage, possibly because of oral intake during her recovery period.
